Commuters want shifting of north-bound suburban trains to ease operation of suburban trains from MMC to Beach railway station
The west section of suburban network is the longest section of the four sections of suburban services operated by Chennai division with train services operated to as long as Thiruttani and Arakkonam. It also has the highest number of EMU services with nearly four lakh commuters travelling daily.
The option to explore the viability of shifting the north-bound suburban trains comes in the wake of EMU services towards west section daily being delayed by a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes, that too during morning and evening peak hours. Also the absence of adequate platforms at the MMC and the operational delays caused by the cross over of the suburban trains from MMC to the slow line beyond Basin Bridge railway station - the point where mail and express trains also pass through.
Social activist T. Sadagopan said a large number of suburban as well as mail and express trains originate from the Dr. MGR Central station. Moreover unlike the south section of Beach to Chengalpattu via Tambaram which has few operational issues, the west section has several crossovers of EMUs including Tiruvallur, Pattabhiram and Avadi. In this situation provision of a dedicated corridor for EMUs to Avadi, Tiruvallur and Arakkonam stations from MMC would pave way for seamless operation of suburban trains.
Due to several crossovers, the Chennai division has given speed restrictions for loco drivers of EMUs to operate at 15 kilometres per hour instead of 30 kmph.
Railway activist also point out that with the shifting of the operation of the north section to Beach railway station commuters would find it easy to access Tambaram- and Velachery-bound trains by switching just the platforms.
S. Krishna, a regular commuter from Ponneri, said the Beach railway station is already a transport hub and by shifting the EMUs from MMC station to Beach station the commuters of north section would have better access to suburban trains. This would also help avoide the delays caused by north-bound suburban trains waiting to crossover from MMC, to mail and express trains at Basin bridge station.
A senior official of the Chennai division of Southern Railway said a feasibility study would be done on the suggestions for shifting the suburban trains to Beach station.

Tiruvallur freight train fire: Southern Railway completes track restoration work
The Southern Railway, during a night long restoration work on Sunday (July 13, 2025), restored both the up and down tracks which were affected after a fire accident and derailment of freight wagons near Tiruvallur. Earlier in the day, a wagon carrying fuel from Harbour to Wallajah siding, caught fire resulting in 12 wagons being damaged and derailment of six wagons. The fire accident resulted in several mail and express train services from Chennai being suspended; and termination and diversion of incoming trains. Suburban train services on the west section towards Tiruvallur and Arakkonam were completely stopped with shuttle services operated from Avadi to Moore Market complex (MMC) suburban railway station. M. Senthamil Selvan, Chief Public Relations Officer of Southern Railway, said as announced earlier, the tracks were made fit for operation and the Dr. MGR Chennai Central-Thiruvananthapuram (12695) express train was operated on the down line at 10 p.m. on Sunday and the upline was restored and Yercaud Express (22650) from Erode to Chennai was received. On Monday (July 14) morning, the Southern Railway also decided to operate suburban electrical multiple unit (EMU) trains between MMC and Tiruvallur and Arakkonam as specials at 30-minute intervals. Mr. Selvan said the suburban trains were operated taking into consideration the huge office-going population from Arakkonam and Tiruvallur, while maintaining normal EMU services from Avadi to MMC.

First suburban train with senior citizen coach rolls out from Matunga
MUMBAI: The first suburban local train with a dedicated coach for senior citizens, similar to those reserved for luggage and physically challenged, is now ready at the Matunga station. The Matunga Workshop for Central Railway (CR), which modelled it, will also modify its remaining fleet of 163 trains in the coming days by September 2026. This train is expected to start on tracks soon by this week. The dedicated compartment will bring relief to senior citizens who face commuting hassles while boarding or de-boarding suburban trains, especially during rush hours, and ensures a comfortable, safe journey. First suburban train with senior citizen coach rolls out from Matunga The modification in local trains was initiated after the Bombay High Court, in September 2024, directed the railways to expedite carving out a reserved space for senior citizens. The case stems from a Public Interest Litigation filed by K P Purushothaman Nair, a lawyer and retired government employee. He sought relief from the Ministry of Railways for a separate coach for senior citizens, similar to one for physically challenged persons in Mumbai's suburban trains. Although every train has seven seats in two general compartments earmarked for senior citizens, accessing them remains a challenge. During morning and evening peak rush hours, several senior citizens board coaches that are reserved for physically challenged passengers to avoid the overcrowded general coaches. The railway officials had informed the court then that the railway board had approved a proposal for modifications, which would be made over the next two years without hampering existing train services. 'Central Railway's Matunga Workshop has rolled out the first Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) rake featuring a dedicated compartment for elderly passengers in the Mumbai suburban network,' a CR spokesperson said. The Railway Board had issued directives for the modifications. 'A dedicated team of Matunga Workshop executed structural and interior modifications on one EMU rake by converting a middle luggage compartment in the sixth coach from Mumbai end into a dedicated space for senior citizen commuters, marking a significant step toward inclusive mobility,' a statement issued by the railway read. The Western Railway also plans to convert the luggage compartments in 105 non-AC EMU rakes into senior citizen coaches, each having 13 seats and offering space for 91 commuters.
