ENGLAND'S most closure-prone roads have been revealed – with the notorious M6 stretch between junctions 6 and 7 near Birmingham taking the top spot in 2025 so far.
Freedom of Information data obtained by Co-op Insurance shows that the busy route has experienced the highest number of shut-downs so far this year.

The section, located in the West Midlands and known as the Spaghetti Junction, has been closed 29 times since January.
Connecting the M6 with the A38(M) Aston Expressway and other local roads like the A38 and A5127, the junction is famous for its complex, multi-level design.
It also features numerous slip roads, a roundabout - Salford Circus - and elevated roadways.
The nickname "Spaghetti' was reportedly coined by a Birmingham Evening Mail journalist in the 1970s, due to the junction's complex network of intertwining roads.

This causes significant issues for thousands of drivers, with data showing some 50,000 cars use the M6 toll each day, although the M6 itself is known to carry more traffic, with a section near Wolverhampton said to take some 180,000.
Coming in just behind it in the ranking is junctions 37 to 38 on the A1M near Doncaster, while the M1 between junctions 23a and 24 near East Midlands Airport is in third place.
Road closures are serious bad news for drivers as they lead to an increase in journey times – which, in turn, means much more stress and frustration.
This, of course, can impair driving performance and safety, raising the risk of accidents and incidents occurring.

Paul Evans, Head of Motor at Co-op Insurance, said: 'From commuting to leisure trips and visiting loved ones, our motorway network is a vital part of so many people's daily journeys.
'However, our findings suggest that getting from A to B via the motorway can sometimes be less than straightforward, with road closures seemingly on the rise and particularly common on certain stretches of motorway.

'We're therefore urging drivers to plan their journeys carefully before they set off so that they can be prepared for any road closures, avoid rushed or panicked decisions and safely navigate diversions.'
The motoring experts also found which motorways closed the most throughout 2024 – having found that motorway road closures rose by 18% last year.

The number recorded by National Highways in England increased to more than 6,870, with incidents of total closures of both carriageways rising by 14% to just over 280.
When it came to the roads worst affected by closures, they found that junction 63 of the A1M at Chester-Le-Street was closed the most – with a sizeable tally of 127.
This was followed by the M53 at junction eight northbound in Ellesmere Port and the M6 between junction 21 and 21a in Warrington.
Indeed, four out of the top 10 junction locations with the highest number of road closures in 2024 were in Yorkshire – with three on the M621 in Leeds.

Elsewhere, three of the top 10 were in Cheshire, with two on the M53.

Their warning stems from pedestrians walking on the motorway or vehicles stopping to drop off or pick up passengers - which is illegal and highly dangerous. Offenders who are caught doing this may be fined, with those arriving by car instructed to use designated collection points which are clearly marked off the motorway. To this end, drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys to avoid congestion, while also following dedicated event signs - rather than relying on sat nav systems which may lead them onto unsuitable roads. For the event, extra police and National Highways traffic officers will be stationed near junction 11 of the M56 to manage traffic and ensure safety. Car parks for the festival site will open at midday on Thursday and close at 2 pm on Monday. Traffic from the north, south and east are urged to use junction 11 of the M56, while traffic from the west should use junction 12. Congestion hotspots include junctions 10, 11 and 12 of the M56 and the M56/M6 interchange at Lymm are expected to be particularly busy. Electronic motorway signs will be used to provide real-time updates on congestion and incidents. Creamfields, which runs from Thursday at 2 pm to Sunday at 11 pm, will have an expected 70,000 attendees. As with Creamfields, National Highways will have extra traffic officers on duty and electronic signs will provide updates on incidents and congestion.

Drivers risk losing licences due to proposed tougher rules on roads
Drivers aged 70 and over could face mandatory eyesight tests under fresh government plans. The proposal follows an inquest examining four fatalities caused by motorists with deteriorating vision, which led a coroner to describe Britain's licensing system as the "most lenient in Europe". The modifications are anticipated to appear in a new road safety blueprint scheduled for release by the government this autumn. A government source revealed: "In no other circumstance would we accept 1,600 people dying [on the roads each year], with thousands more seriously injured, costing the NHS more than £2bn per year." They added: "This Labour government will deliver the first Road Safety Strategy in a decade, imposing tougher penalties on those breaking the law, protecting road users and restoring order to our roads." Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch supported the proposals, declaring: "I think we need to make sure that people driving on our roads and using our streets are safe," reports Birmingham Live. That said, poor vision is only recorded as a contributing element in fewer than one per cent of reported collisions, whilst driver exhaustion accounts for roughly 20% of road accidents. Sleep specialists have cautioned that operating a vehicle whilst fatigued could pose greater risks to motorists than alcohol or narcotics. Representatives for MattressNextDay sent Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to reveal the number of motorists who have had their licences revoked due to sleep-related conditions, as well as the regions with the highest numbers of drivers with a sleep-related condition, reports Birmingham Live. Their findings revealed that since 2020, 1,816 drivers in the UK have had their licences revoked for sleep-related conditions. Additionally, a total of 171,870 drivers in the UK have reported sleep-related medical conditions to the DVLA, marking a 15.7% increase compared to 2018's figure of 148,575. The Shetland Isles top the list for the most sleep-impaired drivers per 10k people (103.1), followed by Shropshire (99.21) and East Riding of Yorkshire (95.40). On the other end of the scale, the West Midlands has the fewest number of sleep-impaired drivers per 10k people at 16.67, followed by Greater London (18.30) and Inverclyde (20.06). Narcolepsy is particularly dangerous if a driver experiences an episode while driving. This is a disruptive sleep disorder that causes excessive daytime sleepiness. While having narcolepsy does not necessarily prevent someone from driving, they do need to inform the DVLA about their condition. People with excessive sleepiness, a separate condition, must also alert the DVLA as it can be hazardous when driving. This condition often results in difficulty concentrating but can usually be managed with lifestyle changes.
