'Turun Anwar' Protest An Attempt To Remain Politically Relevant, Says PM's Aide

Barnama5 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's political secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin, has dismissed the upcoming 'Turun Anwar' protest as a political ploy by a 'small group' seeking to maintain relevance.
He asserted that the demonstration, scheduled to take place in the federal capital on July 26, is not a genuine expression of public discontent as claimed by its organisers.
'This (protest) is not about the rakyat, it is about a small group attempting to reverse what they failed to achieve through the ballot box,' he said in his speech at the National Economic Forum organised by the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia here today.

He said the government was given the mandate through a free and fair election and had been working tirelessly since then to resolve long-standing issues left by previous administrations such as institutional decay, weaknesses in governance and fiscal mismanagement.
'If a change is desired, contest the next election, that is the democratic way...Malaysia must not be distracted by this noise. What we need now is maturity, unity and delivery,' he added.
Shamsul Iskandar said, what the country needed most is wise leadership and not leaders chasing headlines or popularity contests — but leaders who think beyond themselves, who ask 'What will this country look like when I am gone?.'

A wise leader he said, is a leader who 'Builds institutions, not ego; Builds trust, not tribes; Builds for the next generation, not the next election.'
'This is precisely the leadership style of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim: restrained, principled, and focused on service — leading reforms one by one, rebuilding trust, strengthening institutions and ensuring that no one is left behind. 'It is the same wise leadership that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar commands at the regional level as ASEAN Chair that gathered the top diplomats of United States, China and Russia in Kuala Lumpur recently which was an impressive diplomatic achievement,' he said.

Perak Offers RM5,000 To Support Union Formation

IPOH, July 22 (Bernama) -- The Perak government aims to encourage about 10 per cent of public and private sector workers to form trade unions in the state within the next three years as part of efforts to empower workers' rights and safeguard their welfare. State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan said Perak is the first state to provide a special allocation of RM5,000 to help workers set up their unions. 'In Perak, out of 1.25 million workers, only a small number have joined unions. The membership rate in this state is lower than the national average of eight per cent. 'Unions are established in workplaces to ensure industrial harmony. If there is a union, workers can negotiate for salary adjustments every two years, as well as for health benefits and leave-related matters,' he told a press conference here today. He said union formation should now be easier following the 2023 amendments to the Trade Unions Act 1959, but many employers remain fearful and are reluctant to allow their workers to form unions. To facilitate union formation, Sivanesan said the state Trade Union Affairs Department has been instructed to represent the state government and assist the workers. 'When a pro-tem committee is formed but has yet to be registered with the Trade Union Affairs Department, it requires funding to carry out its activities, as it is not permitted to collect money. That's why the Perak state government will provide the funds. 'The funds will be used to help workers establish unions. I hope this will benefit at least 1.1 million workers who are currently not union members or have no union at their workplaces,' he said. He said that union formation is crucial as Perak is expected to have around 30,000 new workers in the future due to upcoming industrial projects in Proton City, Lumut Maritime Industrial City (LUMIC), Bagan Datuk, Chemor, and Kinta Industrial Park.

Govt To Form Task Force To Review Death Penalty Policy, Direction

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- The government will establish a task force under the Criminal Law Reform Committee (CLRC) to conduct a comprehensive review of the country's death penalty policy and direction. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the decision to form the task force was made by the government on July 9. 'This review will be carried out comprehensively using an evidence-based approach, involving all stakeholders, including the families of death row inmates and victims' families. 'The government is committed to examining the matter thoroughly before making any final decision,' she said in a written reply uploaded on the Parliament website today. She was responding to a question from Syerleena Abdul Rashid (PH–Bukit Bendera) on the government's direction towards the complete abolition of the death penalty and whether the existing moratorium on executions would be maintained in line with Malaysia's support for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution. Azalina said the establishment of the task force followed suggestions made by stakeholders during several engagement sessions held in April this year, which called for a more in-depth study as there were still prisoners awaiting execution. She said the engagement session, which involved government agencies, legal bodies, non-governmental organisations and civil society organisations, was held to gather preliminary views on the policy direction, including implementation, legal and human rights aspects of the complete abolition of the death penalty. According to her, reform measures concerning the death penalty had been initiated since 2018 through its abolition and the enforcement of a moratorium, during which appeals for pardon by inmates on death row were still permitted in accordance with existing legal provisions. 'After the Death Penalty and Life Imprisonment Review Act 2023 (Act 847) was gazetted, a total of 906 inmates were identified as eligible for sentence review and as of October 2024, the Federal Court had commuted the sentences of 863 prisoners.
