Ukraine's Zelenskiy says interceptors downed many Russian drones overnight

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Friday that interceptor drones had proved effective in downing many Russian drones deployed in an overnight Russian attack on Kyiv and issued a new call for their rapid development and production.
Zelenskiy noted the hours-long assault, the largest in the 40-month-old war with more than 500 Russian drones and missiles deployed, had been "difficult, but a significant portion were still shot down".
"Today also brought important results from our interceptor drones. Dozens of Shaheds (Iranian-designed drones) were shot down specifically by these interceptors," Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address.
"We are scaling this up as much as possible. More production of these interceptor drones, more training and more preparation for our drone operators. This is a clear task."
Zelenskiy has long focused on manufacturing and developing drones, an industry that was virtually non-existent when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of its smaller neighbour in February 2022.
In recent weeks, he has spoken more specifically of the need to develop drone interceptors to parry increasingly intensive attacks by swarms of Russian drones, deployed along with missiles.
Last month, the president noted that Ukrainian companies had already boosted production of the interceptors in response to the increasingly frequent and destructive Russian attacks.

Air Force spokesperson Yuri Ihnat said last month that developing interceptor drones would help Ukraine use its resources more rationally in fending off Russian attacks, rather than relying on missiles and aircraft. REUTERS

VERSTAPPEN POLE It was not to be, however, with Piastri taking provisional pole after the first flying laps before Verstappen put in a best of one minute 24.892 seconds -- 0.103 quicker. Norris was only 0.015 slower than Piastri. "The first lap was mega, to be honest," said the Australian. "I was trying to think how I could go quicker and I didn't. The last lap was a little bit messy but it's been tight all weekend." Norris said it had been an afternoon of small margins. "I think it's going to be fun tomorrow. I think it's going to be a good battle between the three of us -- or probably more with Lewis, Charles and George," he added. Police said more than 450,000 tickets had been sold for the concert at the Zagreb Hippodrome. Most of the streets in the Zagreb city centre were closed for traffic and some 6,523 policemen had been deployed. Thompson, who has had concerts banned in several European countries including the Netherlands, Switzerland and Bosnia, is accused by critics of flirting with the ideology and iconography of Croatia's Nazi-backed World War Two Ustashe government. The singer, who takes his nickname from the U.S. Thompson submachine gun and rose to popularity in the 1990s during and after the war that followed break-up of Yugoslavia, rejects accusations that his songs glorify the Nazi-backed state. Historians say the Ustashe systematically persecuted and murdered Jews, Serbs and Roma between 1941 and 1945. Elder Jose Arteaga, known as El Costeño, was arrested on suspicion of inducing the 15-year-old charged with shooting the politician at a rally in Colombia's capital Bogota on June 7 to commit the crime, the sources said. Arteaga, who the two sources said has a long criminal record, was detained in a neighborhood in western Bogota, a day after Colombian police said Interpol issued a red notice for his arrest. Colombian police chief Carlos Fernando Triana said in a post on social media on Friday that Arteaga was wanted for "aggravated attempted homicide; manufacture, trafficking and carrying of firearms or ammunition; and use of minors for the commission of crimes." Uribe - a 39-year-old presidential pre-candidate for the conservative opposition Democratic Center party - was shot twice in the head and once in his left leg, according to state prosecutors. He has undergone several serious surgeries since the attack, which left him in critical condition.
