Hurricane Iona Just Formed. Here's Where It's Heading and Who Could Be in Danger.
Fox Weather on Monday reported that the National Hurricane Center upgraded Iona from a tropical storm after forming Sunday night south of Hawaii to a Category 1 hurricane after strengthening Monday morning.
Iona was initially a tropical depression before reaching the maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour, which is what triggered the upgrade to a tropical storm.
But things intensified as of Monday morning, with Fox Weather reporting that Hurricane Iona, located about 895 miles southeast of Honolulu, is moving off the west at 10 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour. But there's good news on the horizon.
Hurricane Iona is expected to strengthen over the next few days before weakening later in the week. As that unfolds, Hurricane Iona is not expected to impact the Hawaiian islands.
"Confidence remains high that Iona will stay well south of the Hawaiian Islands," forecasters said, via CBS News.
CBS News also reports that Hurricane Iona will upgrade to a Category 2 by Tuesday before gradually weakening.
Hurricane Iona is the first hurricane in the Central Pacific Basin this season. Fox Weather reports that it's also the first July hurricane in the basin since Darby in 2022.

Mudslide shuts down part of Highway 40 in Kananaskis
Part of Highway 40 in Kananaskis Country closed Sunday due to a mud slide. According to a 511 Alberta advisory issued around 8:30 a.m. MT Sunday, a washout on the highway closed it to all traffic between the Mount Lipsett and Mist Creek day-use areas. That section of Highway 40 is roughly 130 kilometres southeast of Banff, Alta. RCMP said on Sunday they expect the road to be closed for two days. Sunday morning's advisory was an update to a previous advisory issued around 10 p.m. Saturday. At that time, 511 Alberta said the highway between Elbow Lake and Junction south of Kananaskis Village was closed due to the mudslide. A mudslide was also reported on Highway 1, west of Banff. 511 Alberta said the weather event brought debris onto the highway, causing delays east of Redearth Creek. Environment Canada says more rain, with the risk of a thunderstorm, is in Sunday's forecast for Kananaskis Village.

Delta Air Lines Suddenly Cancels Nearly 200 Flights
Delta Air Lines canceled nearly 200 flights over the weekend at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the overnight hours into Friday morning as a result of some bad weather. According to Atlanta News First, more than 180 overnight Delta flights were canceled as a result of what Delta described as severe summer weather. Delta was not the only airline impacted, but most of the canceled flights were Delta flights. A Delta spokesperson described the move as 'proactive' due to the severe summer weather. 'Yes, there are proactive cancellations today in Atlanta due to severe summer weather,' a spokesperson for Delta Air Lines told 11 Alive in Atlanta on Friday. 'Safety for our passengers and crew is our top priority.' The mass cancellations come after a "nightmare" Delta flight sent more than two dozen people to the hospital. Delta Air Lines Flight 56 from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam experienced "significant" turbulence and needed to divert. When the plane landed, 25 people were hospitalized. A woman who was aboard the flight said that the in-flight dinner service started when the shocking turbulence hit from out of nowhere. "There was actually no warning. It was a very abrupt, hard hit," said Leeann Nash, who spoke to Minneapolis' ABC affiliate. "If you didn't have your seat belt on -- everyone that didn't -- they hit the ceiling, and then they fell to the ground, and the carts also hit the ceiling and fell to the ground, and people were injured, and it happened several times, so it was really scary." Needless to say, it seems like Delta was making safety a priority for its customers given the severe weather on Thursday night, especially after the scary incident that occurred earlier this week. While the cancellations were undoubtedly frustrating, they were understandable in context.
