Turbidity of the Khandepar swells after downpour rage

Turbidity of the Khandepar swells after downpour rage

Time of Indiaa day ago

Ponda:
The incessant rain in the catchment areas of Khandepar and Kalem rivers during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday has raised the turbidity of raw water in the Khandepar river.
The Opa Water Works recorded river water turbidity of 325 NTU (nephelometric turbidity unit) on Friday afternoon.
Turbidity refers to opaqueness or cloudiness. Water containing 1mg of finely divided silica per litre has a turbidity of 1 NTU and up to 50 NTU is considered normal.
However, data shows that such a high rise in turbidity has been seen far earlier this year as compared to the past eight years.
Sunil Kerkar, an assistant engineer of the department of drinking water said the early arrival of the monsoon contributed to the spike in turbidity.
Kerkar said that the phenomenon is common during heavy rainfall. He said silt washes off from catchment areas and pours into river water, leading to high turbidity.
Sometimes consumers too get turbid water.
'Water is released to consumers only after proper filtration is carried out at Opa water treatment plants,' Kerkar said.
After raw water is drawn into a receiving chamber from a river, it flows into sedimentation tanks to allow silt to settle.

Next, the water passes through three stages from sand filter beds to the chlorination plant and to the main balancing reservoir for storage and supply.
High turbidity levels, however, cost the state exchequer dearly, as several million litres of treated water is used to clean the clogged filters every year. The filters quickly become non-functional due to the density of mining sediments.

Alert Pune residents save 12 motorists stuck in middle of Charholi bridge; 9 vehicles swept away

Pune: A group of alert residents saved the lives of at least 12 motorists after they tried to drive through an inundated bridge over an overflowing nullah on Charholi-Lohegaon Road on Friday night, only to get stuck in the middle. At least nine of the vehicles were swept away. Some residents had used tree branches and also put up barricades on either side of the bridge after noticing that water was overflowing following the heavy rain that lashed the city since Friday evening, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) fire brigade officer Sushilkumar Rane said on Saturday. "Despite their attempt to alert people not to use the bridge, some motorists removed the tree branches and barricades and drove through the water that had accumulated on the bridge. But with the water level increasing in no time, their vehicles got stranded in the middle of the bridge. As the motorists started screaming for help, the local people rushed to the spot and rescued them. On being alerted, our team also reached the spot and continued with the rescue operation," he told TOI. By then, six four-wheelers and three motorcycles were swept away. "The fire brigade team kept a watch on the road and put the barricades back on both sides of the road," Rane said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo On Saturday morning, fire brigade officials brought out the cars from the nullah with the help of heavy-duty cranes. They were still searching for the motorcycles till the time of going to the press. "We suspect the motorcycles have been swept away towards the Indrayani River. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident," the fire brigade officer said. Fire brigade officials said following the heavy rain in Alandi, Lohegaon and Charholi, the overflowing natural streams in the areas developed strong currents. "There's a hillock on one side of the nullah. As a result, the streams develop strong currents when it rains heavily in the area," an official said. Last year too, many vehicles were swept away at the same spot following heavy rain. A group of youngsters had then saved two motorists from being swept away. Keeping all this in mind, the residents put up the tree branches and barricades when the nullah water level reached the road on Friday. The Pimpri Chinchwad fire brigade received nine tree felling incidents causing traffic jams in the various parts of the twin industrial townships.
