Patna: The Congress's announcement to distribute five lakh sanitary pad boxes under its 'Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana' triggered a political storm in Bihar on Friday after images of party MP Rahul Gandhi appeared on the boxes.

The NDA criticised the move, calling it a "direct insult" to women, who have emerged as key voters in recent state elections.
Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar, speaking in the presence of All India Mahila Congress chief Alka Lamba, said the scheme was aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene awareness among rural women. "We have a special plan for the women folk in Bihar. We plan to provide free sanitary napkins to women for which we will launch an intensive campaign," Kumar told reporters here.
However, controversy erupted when he held up a sanitary pad box displaying Rahul's photo alongside the INDIA bloc's proposed 'Mai-Bahin Maan Yojana', which promises Rs 2,500 monthly to women if voted to power.
The ruling alliance reacted with outrage. JD(U) MLC and spokesperson Neeraj Kumar accused the Congress of degrading the dignity of women. "The Congress seems to have taken a leaf out of the book of its ally RJD, which has been known for a lumpen style of politics.
Our leader Nitish Kumar has been tirelessly working for women's empowerment and the results are for all to see. But the Congress has insulted the dignity of women," he said.
BJP spokesperson Kuntal Krishna echoed the sentiment. "Whatever needs to be done for women in Bihar is being done by the govt. But the Congress, which is worried about its prospects in the upcoming assembly polls, has shown its ideological bankruptcy.

Its leader Rahul Gandhi has been notorious for lacking a sense of propriety. The trait seems to have afflicted the party, in which sycophancy reigns supreme," he said.
Women too expressed disapproval of the design. "This is nothing but an insult to the entire women community who will find the image of a male while using the sanitary pads. This is very bad. The Congress is stooping too low to win the support of the women voters," said Pinki Kumari of Muzaffarpur.
"If the Congress thinks it will get support of the women class by distributing free napkins with the image of Rahul Gandhi, then it is sheer stupidity," she added, arguing the focus should have been on women's safety.
"Rahul Gandhi is trying to emerge as a 'Pad Man' but that is not the way to launch a party campaign," said Sunita Singh of Vaishali.
Defending the campaign, Lamba said, "In the modern era, the question should not be why Rahul ji's photo was put on the sanitary napkin box, the real question is why our daughters in Bihar are still forced to use cloth during menstruation and becoming victims of serious diseases?"
She also criticised the BJP's response. "From a 'sindoor box' to vaccine certificates, the BJP, which prints Modi ji's photo on everything, is now troubled by Rahul ji's photo. The work that the govt should have done, we have started," Lamba said, crediting Rahul's "inspiration and visionary thinking" for making the campaign possible.

Speaking about Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray sharing one stage on Saturday as part of their 'victory rally', Waghmare said that Uddhav Thackeray is desperate to join hands with the MNS chief as his party is on a verge of extinction in the state. 'If you see Raj Thackeray's speech, he believes in Marathi, but if you see Uddhav Thackeray's speech, it was only directed at power and government. Maharashtra's public understood that Uddhav Thackeray is desperate to join hands with Raj, as his party is on the verge of extinction. All corporators from Mumbai and MLAs are with us and the Marathi people believe in Eknath Shinde, that's why we won 60 out of 80 seats we fought on. Shiv Sena got more than 80 lakh votes. Eknath Shinde is taking forward Balasaheb Thackeray's thoughts, so the public is with us,' he said. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande termed today as an auspicious day for the Sanatan dharma. 'Today is Ashadi Ekadashi, and thousands of devotees have reached Pandharpur. 'The public has understood the truth behind Uddhav Thackeray's act of helplessness. I pray Lord Vitthal to give him a good sense and the 'green sheet' he is wearing turns into saffron,' he added. Earlier on Saturday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with his family, took part in the vibrant Ashadhi Ekadashi celebrations at the Shree Vitthal Rukmini Temple in Pandharpur. Speaking after the rituals, CM Fadnavis said, 'The 'Wari' is a very joyous moment. It unites the devotee and God. The energy of both joins together, and a new energy is created. I came here to experience that energy... Today, all our companions got the opportunity to offer this Puja together.' Reflecting on his spiritual sentiments, he added, 'As far as Vitthal Bhagwan and Pandurang Bhagwan are concerned, we do not have to ask anything from them because they know what is in everyone's mind. I have asked him to give us strength for the progress of our Maharashtra and give us the strength to walk on the right path. May our farmers get good harvests.' (ANI)

"Thread that binds entire nation for national unity, integrity": Virendraa Sachdeva pays tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee

New Delhi [India], July 6 (ANI): On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Delhi BJP President Virendraa Sachdeva said that the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, served as a true tribute to Mookerjee, emphasising that his vision of nationalism continues to guide the BJP today. Addressing the event in Delhi, Sachdeva said, 'If you want to understand nationalism, national policy and India and its culture, then one should read the life of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee. His journey is a 'nationalist' journey... The way he raised his voice against Muslim appeasement. When Bharatiya Jana Sangh was formed on October 21, 1951, the ideology of nationalism was the result today in the form of BJP. The ideology that he had nurtured today stands as the largest party (BJP) in the world...' Recalling Syama Prasad Mookerjee's consistent stand on Jammu and Kashmir, Sachdeva said, 'Till the time he was in Cabinet, he always raised the issue of Jammu and Kashmir. He had clear policy on Jammu and Kashmir - it's an integral part of India and there should not be two Constitutions in one country...' The Delhi BJP unit President expressed his happiness that he is a worker of a party that has made Mookerjee's ideas their fundamental policy. Sachdeva stated, 'I am happy that I am a worker of a party that made Dr Mookerjee's ideas their fundamental policy. Today, under the leadership of PM Modi, we are nurturing those ideas. We all remember August 5, 2019.' 'A true tribute to Dr Mookerjee was given on that day, the day when Article 370 was abrogated. If there is one thread that binds the entire nation for national unity and integrity, it is Syama Prasad Mukherjee,' said the Delhi BJP President. Earlier today, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Delhi BJP President Virendraa Sachdeva, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and other party leaders paid floral tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ideological parent organisation of the BJP. Born on July 6, 1901, in Calcutta, was a multifaceted personality - patriot, educationist, parliamentarian, statesman, and humanitarian. He inherited a legacy of erudition and nationalism from his father, Sir Ashutosh Mookerjee, an esteemed Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University and Judge of the Calcutta High Court. Post-Independence, he joined the interim government under Jawaharlal Nehru as Minister for Industry and Supply, where he laid the foundation for India's industrial growth by establishing iconic institutions like the Chittaranjan Locomotive Factory, Sindri Fertilizer Corporation and the Hindustan. However, ideological differences led to his resignation, after which he founded the All-India Bharatiya Jan Sangh (1951) to champion nationalist ideals. According to the BJP's official website, on the issue of the Delhi pact with Likayat Ali Khan, Mookerjee resigned from the Cabinet on April 6, 1950. Later on October 21, 1951, Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in Delhi and became its first president. Mookerjee went to visit Kashmir in 1953 and was arrested on May 11. He died under detention on June 23, 1953. (ANI)
