America's Stock-Market Dominance Is an Emergency for Europe

The London Stock Exchange overhauled the ceremony for welcoming new companies to its ranks last year, adding confetti cannons, slick videos and cinematic music. It has mostly been used for such events as product launches and anniversaries.
So far this year, according to Dealogic, six companies have gone public in the U.K., raising $208 million, the lowest level in three decades of data. It isn't much better across the English Channel, despite surging stock markets. Initial public offerings in continental Europe have nearly halved in value compared with last year. Fundraising in the U.S., meanwhile, has jumped 38% to around $40 billion, while IPOs more than doubled in value in Hong Kong after a fallow patch.
Tech stars such as the Swedish 'buy now, pay later' company Klarna and the British chip designer Arm are eschewing local markets to list in New York. And stock-market heavyweights are disappearing, either bought out by American companies or moving their listings stateside, where business is growing faster. Examples are Wise, the British payments company, and the sports-betting company Flutter Entertainment.
'For the Europeans who are responsible for the future, this is a material wake-up call,' said Stéphane Boujnah, chief executive officer of Euronext, which owns seven stock exchanges in the region. Europe doesn't want to 'be just a zone between America and Asia,' he added.

Looking for great UK dividend stocks to buy? Here are two on my own personal watchlist. Targeting stable dividends I think renewable energy stocks like Greencoat Renewables (LSE:GRP) have considerable growth opportunities as the push towards net zero continues. The world's energy needs are growing, and green sources are having to make up a growing portion of the overall mix as the world reduces fossil fuel use. The outlook for the sector is especially bright in Europe — Greencoat believes the continent's renewables market will be worth €1.3trn by 2030, and will swell to €2.5trn by 2050. What I like about this particular stock is its wide geographical footprint. Energy production from renewable sources is highly sensitive to weather conditions. Owning assets that are located hundreds of miles apart helps smooth out varabilities in energy output. This is essential to support stable cash flows, which are used to fund dividends. It's not enough to just be operating in the defensive energy sector where demand remains stable. Companies need operational resilience to capitalise on this. Greencoat Renewables has demonstrated such durability. It's raised annual dividends each year since it listed eight years ago, excluding 2021, when payouts were frozen. In total, it's delivered €350m of cumulative dividends over the period. What's more, its dividend yields have long beaten the long-term average for UK shares. At 8.7%, the forward yield for Greencoat is more than double the FTSE 100's historical average of 3%-4%, for instance. Of course, there are dangers here, such as changing green energy policy and rising project costs. A focus on wind farms also leaves it more technologically concentrated than some other renewable energy stocks. But I still believe it's a top dividend share to consider for at least the next decade. A FTSE favourite FTSE 100-listed M&G (LSE:MNG) is another British stock with a huge market opportunity today. It doesn't enjoy the (overall) year-to-year stability that renewable energy shares enjoy. As a major financial services provider, its earnings are vulnerable to the economic downturns that can drain consumer spending power. But over a long-term horizon, it has considerable scope to grow earnings. Rapidly ageing populations are supercharging demand for protection, investment, and retirement products, and asset management services. The UK asset management sector, for instance is set to grow 13.4% a year between now and 2030, according to Mordor Intelligence. While competitive threats remain, I feel M&G has the brand power and the scale to thrive in this environment. This, in turn, bodes well for dividends, which have grown every year since the company listed in 2019. For 2025, the Footsie company carries an enormous 7.7% dividend yield. This is currently the fifth highest on the UK blue-chip index, and is underpinned by the firm's robust balance sheet. Thanks to its excellent cash generation, M&G's Solvency II capital ratio was 223% as of December. This should give it ample financial firepower to keep paying large dividends while also investing for growth. Remember that dividends are never guaranteed. Priced off the housing ladder Ade Akinwale feared that he might be stuck renting for years to come. Then he discovered a backdoor route into home ownership. Until February Ade and his wife Lara, 36, were renting a three-bedroom house in Thamesmead, south-east London. With three young children, aged four, six, and eight, the house was packed to the rafters, and the circa £1,400pcm they paid in rent was stopping them saving up for a deposit. In the three years they lived there they paid out around £50,000 in rent. The couple were also keen to leave behind Thamesmead's urban sprawl and build a new life somewhere more peaceful and child-friendly. 'With three kids all at school age, we knew we had to find a suburb that could offer all the things we felt our life in London was lacking – a like-minded community, great local schools and plenty of green space,' says Ade, 42, a risk manager. Lara is a dental therapist and their joint salaries are too high for them to be eligible for a shared ownership home. So Ade began to look into Rent to Buy, a Government-backed plan which allows people to rent at a 20 per cent discount so they can save up for a deposit. In Ade and Lara's case they decided not only to move but to upsize. Their chosen property is a four-bedroom house at Capstone Green, a development between Chatham and Maidstone, in Kent. They put down a deposit of just over £1,236, and pay rent of £1,340pcm. The move, says Ade, has galvanised them to save seriously and he hopes they will be in a position to buy the house within two to three years. 'We could have stayed in Thamesmead and saved,' says Ade. 'But we would have had to wait and the house was too small. This has really made us commit to saving. It has given us drive.' Ade works from home most of the time but when he is required in the office his train journey from Chatham to King's Cross St Pancras takes around 40 minutes. And he is also impressed by how welcoming his new neighbours have been. 'What really stood out is the sense of community here as there's lots of families and everyone is so friendly. The kids have settled in so well at their new schools. 'It truly feels like we're on the right path to homeownership and giving our kids the best possible start.' (NASDAQ:AMZN) announced on August 13 that it will be expanding its same-day delivery service to include fresh and frozen grocery items for its Prime members. The company did not reveal the cities included in the rollout. However, the latest move indicates a deeper commitment by the company to improve its share in the perishable item segment. If the company can capture a share of the same-day delivery for perishable items and scale up, its impact in the grocery sector is likely to grow; it is likely to put pressure on the traditional grocers and delivery rivals, given Amazon's scale and delivery moat.
