I tested GHD's new hair tool against Asda's £141 cheaper version – the winner gave me luscious locks that lasted all day
So when GHD launched its new Curve Wave triple-barrel tool, promising beachy waves in minutes for £159, I had to know if it was really worth the hefty price tag.

Tucked away on the supermarket's shelf, I found the George Black Hair Waver for just £14.40
That's £141 cheaper than the GHD and barely more than a posh shampoo.

The Asda hair waver gave me a beachy mermaid look that lasted all day long
Black Hair Waver, £14.40,
Starting with the underdog, I unboxed the George hair waver and took it for a spin.
I prepped my hair by giving it a quick wash and blow dry and made sure to use heat protectant.

I used the same hair wash products and
Once you plug it in and switch it on, there's no indicator to tell you when it's ready to use but I found it heated up in around 30-45 seconds.
Can £39 viral split ends cutter replace hairdresser
So far, although it looks pretty basic, I was happy - it heated up in under a minute and was light enough to hold without giving me arm ache.
With smaller barrels than the likes of the GHD, I had to work in narrower sections.
I split my hair in two (mine's thick and long – the kind that makes most tools cry) and worked through it in about 20 minutes.
That's quick enough for me to fit into my morning routine.
I have to say, the results were shockingly good.
It delivered defined, structured waves that looked glossy and polished – like
The kind of hair that makes strangers ask what shampoo you use.
But here's the kicker, the style lasted all day long.
Even the next morning, I woke up with waves intact, which came as a major surprise because my hair struggles to hold a lot of styles.
It's basic, yes, there's no cool tip or fancy temperature control but it just works.
If you want tight waves that hold their shape, this little tool packs a serious punch.

GHD Wave Triple Barrel Hair Waver, £159,
Now for the more expensive one.
Let's be honest, GHD knows how to do sleek.
From the luxe packaging to the premium feel, it oozes designer energy.
It even gives a polite chime when it's ready to go and it heats up in a flash.
The bigger barrel means you can tackle more hair at once, which sounds great in theory.
But the tool itself is very weighty, and awkward to manoeuvre, especially when trying to get round the back.
I even caught the side of my neck once, leaving a small burn.
But the good thing is you're not holding it up for too long.
Once I got into the groove, it took me around 15-20 seconds to do per section.
I have to say, the results were undeniably pretty.
It gave me soft, loose, beachy waves that were perfect for a soft summer look.
But within a few hours, they'd started to fall.
By the time I'd reached the dinner table, my 'effortless glam' had turned into 'couldn't find my brush'.
On thinner or finer hair, it might've held better.
But on my thicker hair, the GHD just couldn't keep up.
Gorgeous at first, yes – but it wilted so fast, I had to restyle my hair for my evening dinner plans.

How do they compare?
Honestly, between the two wavers, the surprise winner was definitely the Asda waver.
Sure, it doesn't come with the bells, whistles or luxury aesthetics but it certainly delivers.
It gave me long-lasting, camera-ready waves that survived a full day of wear, all for under £15.
It was lighter to hold, so no burns or arm aches.
It was relatively quick and all around just very impressive for the price point.
GHD's tool is undeniably sleek, quick and luxe.
It looks a lot better than the Asda waver, that's for sure.
But the results were sadly underwhelming.
Although it gives you a nice soft, effortless look, the style just didn't stick and when you're spending £159, you want more than just pretty packaging.
So if you're after beach-babe waves that'll last all day long on a budget, the Asda waver is your new secret weapon.
Proof that sometimes the most expensive tools aren't necessarily the best.

Tommy Fury admits life has been 'horrible' despite Molly-Mae reunion: 'Torture'
Tommy Fury has candidly confessed that his past six months have been "absolute torture." Fury has recently reignited his romance with Molly-Mae Hague and the couple are presently basking in the sunshine in Turkey during their latest family getaway. The duo have been posting endless snapshots of their time away with little Bambi. This occasion is vastly different from their previous overseas trip. This follows after Molly-Mae kept Fury absent from photographs as she tried to hide the fact that she had rekindled her relationship with the boxer after a temporary separation last year. Whilst the British boxing champion is currently relishing some downtime with his family, it seems that all might not be as it appears. In a recent preview for "Tommy: The Good. The Bad. The Fury" - which is scheduled to arrive on BBC iPlayer on August 19, the 26-year-old can be seen having a conversation with his father, John Fury, confessing that he has found it difficult venturing out publicly, reports the Mirror. "My life has been absolute torture for the past six months. Horrible. Going out in public, getting screamed at. And when you go out in public and someone says something, what are you meant to do? Tip your head and f****** walk on? The reason why, you know all of this is here, is because of social media. "And it is because you have a profile, and it is because people are interested in you. If you did not, you would be f*****. You would not earn a penny. So it is tough." Prior to his comeback to the ring in May, Fury disclosed he was experiencing the finest year of his life following his struggle with the breakdown of his relationship with Molly-Mae and descending into a "dark place" due to a hand injury. "Being in a position where boxing is everything, the fact that I couldn't do that or get out of bed in the morning and did what made me happy, I just thought, 'Sod it all.' You go down that dark route for a few weeks and you end up staying down there for a long time and that has consequences," he said. "Like I said, 2024 was the worst year of my life and this year is going to be the best year of my life. It starts on Friday, I've turned it all around. I'm happy mentally now. I feel like you've got to go through these challenges in life, everyone's got a hard life so it's all about that I've come through this." 'TNT' secured a commanding points victory against Kenan Hanjalic in Budapest, Hungary in May during his first bout in almost two years. Shortly following Fury's triumph, the Brit's rival, Jake Paul, told Ariel Helwani that he had shown interest in a rematch and claimed he had even been in contact with Fury's older brother. "I think the Fury fight will happen in the next 12 months, yeah. He just has to be realistic about what's he's worth, right?" he said. "He just had a free fight on DAZN that tanked, couldn't sell the tickets in wherever he was like a 1,000 person venue and he's just negotiating like he's God. Again, I have ten names waiting to fight me in multiple different sports, MMA, boxing, all this stuff. These people just have to be realistic about what they're wanting to get paid and Tommy Fury isn't." Paul also disclosed he messaged the 'Gypsy King' directly regarding the matter. "But I DM'd Tyson Fury because Tyson was like, 'You guys need to make this happen now.' I was like, 'Tyson, you've got to put your brother in check here. He's not going to get this money or this offer anywhere else. "He already missed out on the massive opportunity on Netflix, his dad, who is his manager has no idea what the f*** he's doing and you can't let your dad run your career. Tommy's not his own boss, he's an airhead as well so I just feel bad for him because he thinks he's worth more than what he's worth." When is Tommy Fury's next fight? After his triumph over Hanjalic, Fury wasted no time in challenging Paul during his post-fight interview, bellowing: "Jake Paul's a b**** and he's running scared. Hey Jake, the hand is fixed now baby, the hand is fixed. I fought a guy in here tonight who's had more than 100 amateur fights, an experienced hitter and he's as tough as teeth. "If Jake Paul wants to step inside the ring, I guarantee next time, I will knock you spark out. I've had two years out the ring, this is after two years, I'll knock that bum out whenever he wants it." The duo have subsequently discussed a possible rematch. It seems probable that Fury might compete once more this year before facing the American, though nothing has been finalised. Both Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk could complicate matters after reports emerged that the pair are in separate talks to take on the YouTuber-turned-boxer.

Find out how to save money at Asda SHOW STOPPER Asda is selling the 'perfect event dress' that shoppers say is 'gorgeous' and it's scanning for just £3 at the till A SAVVY shopper has left fashion fans stunned after bagging a 'gorgeous' event-ready dress at Asda for just £3. The bargain-hunter, @finchofautismlife took to TikTok to show off the stunning satin dress from George at Asda. 3 A woman showed off her £3 bargain buy on TikTok Credit: TikTok/ @finchofautismlife 3 She purchased Asda's Satin Beaded Flutter Sleeve Maxi Dress. Credit: Asda She dared viewers to guess how much she paid. Most assumed it was a higher-end buy, with its classy silhouette and flattering fit. But in a follow-up video, she revealed she'd actually paid just three quid after spotting it on a secret in-store clearance rail. She said: 'I've got an event in November and this dress is absolutely perfect and it only cost me £3. I couldn't believe it.' The shopper wasted no time snapping it up, calling it a 'must-have' for autumn and winter occasions. And fans are totally obsessed. 'You look stunning,' one viewer gushed. Another said: 'Wow, I love it, that dress is gorgeous!' A third fan couldn't believe it, they said: 'Asda? You're joking.' Although the dress was scanning for £3 in store, it is discounted to £15 online. It seems this is just the latest win for George at Asda, the supermarket's in-house fashion label that's quickly become a go-to for fashionistas on a budget. Kat Farmers new George at Asda Collection The label regularly delivers viral wardrobe hits that look way more expensive than they are. Last week, shoppers were sent into a frenzy over a sweet broderie anglaise white mini dress, reduced from £22 to just £15, with rave reviews calling it 'classy', 'lightweight' and the 'perfect fit'. Others have gone wild for a £20 floral dress hailed as 'perfect in every way' , ideal for summer weddings or garden parties, while a £12 leopard print denim shirt dress became a best-seller thanks to its comfy oversized fit and transitional style. But the £3 event dress might just take the crown for the best fashion bargain yet. So if you're in the market for an affordable outfit that'll turn heads without emptying your wallet, it might be worth swinging by your local Asda and checking the rails. The buzz comes after Asda launched its first-ever stand-alone George store in Leeds earlier this year, which could be rolled out nationwide if it proves a hit. The new store, which opened on Saturday, May 10, in the old Asda Living unit at Crown Point Retail Park, is a dream come true for George fans. It's packed with affordable fashion, stylish homeware, must-have toys, and adorable baby gear, plus a brand new café to keep you fuelled mid-shop. There are currently 30 Asda Living stores in the UK, but the supermarket giant is testing the waters with this new George-only concept. Bosses are expected to make a decision later this year on whether more will launch across the country. The George brand, first launched in 1989 by fashion guru George Davies, changed the game as the UK's first supermarket clothing label. By 2004, it had become the nation's biggest clothing retailer, and today it's still going strong, racking up 260 million visits a year to its site and stocking shelves in 560 stores. How to save at Asda Shop the budget range Savvy shopper Eilish Stout-Cairns recommends that shoppers grab items from Asda's Just Essentials range. She said: "Asda's budget range is easy to spot as it's bright yellow! Keep your eyes peeled for yellow and you'll find their Just Essentials range. "It's great value and I've found it has a much wider selection of budget items compared to other supermarkets. Sign up to Asda Rewards The savvy-saver also presses on the importance of signing up to Asda's reward scheme. She said: "Asda Rewards is free to join and if you shop at Asda you should absolutely sign up. "As an Asda Rewards member, you'll get exclusive discounts and offers, and you'll also be able to earn 10% cashback on Star Products. "This will go straight into your cashpot, and once you've earned at least £1, you can transfer the money in your cashpot into ASDA vouchers. We've previously rounded up the best supermarket loyalty schemes - including the ones that will save you the most money. Look out for booze deals Eilish always suggests that shoppers looking to buy booze look out for bargain deals. She said: "Asda often has an alcohol offer on: buy six bottles and save 25%. "The offer includes selected bottles with red, white and rose options, as well as prosecco. There are usually lots of popular bottles included, for example, Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot, Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot and Freixenet Prosecco D.O.C. "Obviously, the more expensive the bottles you choose, the more you save." Join Facebook groups The savvy saver also recommends that fans of Asda join Facebook groups to keep in the know about the latest bargains in-store. Eilish said: "I recommend joining the Latest Deals Facebook Group to find out about the latest deals and new launches in store. "Every day, more than 250,000 deal hunters share their latest bargain finds and new releases. "For example, recently a member shared a picture of Asda's new Barbie range spotted in store. "Another member shared the bargain outdoor plants she picked up, including roses for 47p, blackcurrant bushes for 14p and topiary trees for 14p."
