RM13.66 million for preservation of Sabah cultural and arts heritage
TAWAU (Aug 2): The State Government has allocated RM13.66 million for this year to ensure Sabah's cultural and arts heritage continues to be preserved, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor.
'The State Government will continue to intensify efforts to improve the preservation of cultural heritage to further drive and strengthen the tourism industry in the state,' he said at the Tawau International Cultural Festival (FKAT).
State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Haji Mohd Arifin Datuk Haji Mohd Arif delivered his speech.
Held at the Tawau Municipal Council Square on Saturday night, the event was graced by Head of State Tun Musa Aman and his wife, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin.
'I am confident that this festival will be one of those that brings significant impact to the tourism sector and the local economy. The influx of domestic and international tourists during this festival is not only an opportunity to appreciate our cultural treasures but also brings economic spillovers to all indirectly involved.
'They include entrepreneurs, homestay operators, artists and small traders, thereby contributing to the economic growth of the local community.
'This festival also serves as the medium to educate the younger generation about the importance of protecting and valuing our priceless cultural heritage,' he said.
The Chief Minister said that the construction of the Tawau International Cultural Centre (TICC), scheduled for completion in December 2027, will undoubtedly become a cultural hub and a key stage for the convergence of various ethnicities' arts and heritage once completed.
'This will, in turn, elevate Tawau as a competitive international cultural centre,' he said.
In line with the theme 'Cultural Diversity: Warriors, Handicrafts and Marriage,' the FKAT is a manifestation of the beauty and uniqueness of Sabah's multiracial society, he said.
The Chief Minister said this festival is not only a space for cultural exhibition but it is also a platform for interaction between communities from various backgrounds, including participants from Kazakhstan, Indonesia and the Philippines.
'It further strengthens Tawau's role as a border town rich in cultural networks and regional cooperation.
'Therefore, this festival serves as a platform to strengthen interracial unity, raise awareness of cultural diversity, and foster respect and appreciation for the heritage of our ancestors,' he said.

Sabah prioritises agriculture as key driver of economic growth

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said agriculture contributed RM12.2 billion or 14.5 per cent to Sabah's GDP, making it the third largest sector in the state economy. He said this during the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) 2025 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here on Sunday, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. To boost food resilience, Hajiji said Sabah had revived the Sabah Rice and Padi Board last year with the aim of raising rice self-sufficiency to 30 per cent by 2026 and 60 per cent by 2030. He highlighted the role of technology such as the Internet of Things and smart farming in modernising agriculture and attracting younger generations to the sector. So far, Sabah's 15 Permanent Food Production Parks (TKPM) have produced over 1,494 metric tonnes of food, generating more than RM4.32 million in returns. Over 10,000 expected at Bajau Sama Cultural event

Kota Kinabalu: Youth involvement in cultural festivals plays a vital role in uplifting and preserving Sabah's rich heritage, said Vice President of the Bajau Sama abah Community Association (PRBSS), Datuk Japlin Akim. He said the younger generation would be the driving force in sustaining and dignifying the state's traditional arts and culture in the years to come. 'Many young people are actively participating in our events, especially competitions like Bertitik, Ratu Serimpak, Soromas, and more,' he said. Japlin encouraged more youth to attend and engage with cultural activities, particularly those rooted in Bajau Sama traditions. 'Their involvement is essential to ensure our cultural heritage is not only preserved but also empowered and passed down to future generations.' He said this after a radio interview with Sabahfm and SabahVfm ahead of the Rumpun Bajau Sama Sabah Cultural Festival, scheduled to take place from August 7 to 10, 2025. Japlin said the four-day event aims to foster unity and collaboration among Sabah's multiracial communities. It will feature a variety of programmes, including cultural workshops and traditional competitions. 'This festival is one way to strengthen racial harmony and cooperation among the people of Sabah. We hope it draws large crowds from across the state,' he said. Among the highlights of the festival are the Soromas and Bertitik competitions, as well as the much-anticipated Ratu Serimpak pageant. Other activities include traditional dance workshops, cooking exhibitions, and showcases of local products. The event will be held at the Rumpun Bajau Sama Sabah Cultural Hall in Lok Batik, Tuaran, and is expected to be officiated by the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who also serves as PRBSS President, is also expected to attend. Also present during the interview were SabahVfm Manager Ruskap Muharam and SabahFM Manager Felix Lee Leng Pink. Meanwhile, over 10,000 visitors are expected to attend the coming Bajausama Ethnic Cultural Festival. 'The festival serves to elevate and empower the identity of the Bajausama ethnic group. We are targeting more than 10,000 visitors throughout the festival period. 'Our goal is to introduce Bajausama culture not just at the national level, but also internationally — so that tourists can appreciate its uniqueness alongside other traditions in Sabah,' he said. He said this after paying a courtesy call on Head of State Tun Musa Aman at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Friday where he extended an invitation to Musa to attend the festival opening on Aug 10. B2 motorcycle licences for 1,200

PENAMPANG: The MyLesen B2 programme that helped about 1,200 people to obtain free B2 motorcycle licences in Sabah is proof of the strong cooperation between the State and Federal Governments, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said the Government has always been attentive to the pulse and needs of the people across all segments of society, whether in urban or rural areas. 'In this regard, the State and Federal Governments continue to work together to implement various initiatives for the people, especially in areas like transportation, which is a national priority,' he said at the handing-over ceremony of the licences at the International Technology and Commercial Centre (ITCC), here, Saturday. Hajiji said the implementation of the programme was meaningful, as having a Class B2 motorcycle licence directly allows the beneficiaries to legally ride motorcycles and become competent riders. 'This programme is one of the Government's noble efforts to help low-income groups obtain licences, thereby empowering their mobility and expanding access to job opportunities, education and economic participation, especially in rural areas,' he said in his speech read by Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. The MyLesen B2 programme is a government initiative through the Road Transport Department (RTD) under the National 2025 Budget, aimed at assisting 15,000 individuals from underprivileged groups nationwide. They included school students, higher learning institution students and B40 youths to obtain the Class B2 Malaysian Driving Licence (for motorcycles not exceeding 250cc). 'I have been informed that each programme participant has undergone lectures and training sessions, followed by a full testing process conducted by RTD Sabah and the licensing was carried out according to government standards. 'Congratulations to the Sabah RTD Di'rector and all officers who have been highly committed and worked hard in implementing the 2025 MyLesen B2 programme,' he said. The Chief Minister said the RTD-led programme also aligned with the aspirations and initiatives of the State Government under the action plan to eradicate hardcore poverty and empower social mobility, in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya agenda. 'I am confident that if initiatives like this are continued and expanded, we will not only lessen the people's burden but also open broader opportunities for Sabah's youths to move toward a brighter future. 'The State Government always welcomes and fully supports such programmes and noble efforts that are people-centric,' he said. Hajiji said such efforts should be continued so their benefits can be enjoyed by more people, particularly those in need of financial and logistical assistance. 'In the context of the State Government, various forms of assistance and initiatives under the Sabah Maju Jaya 1.0 roadmap have been implemented to support the people, especially the B40 group, in both economic and educational aspects,' he said. He advised the licence recipients to make the best use of their licence and, most importantly, be disciplined, courteous, ethical and responsible road users.
