Devon and Cornwall Police responded to multiple calls in Newton Abbot, Devon, as witnesses reported seeing a forklift damaging vehicles near an industrial estate.
According to witnesses the forklift began lifting one vehicle with people still inside.
But said they were able to escape before it was flipped.
One witness said: "I was doing some fishing there - we normally park on that road.
"I saw a forklift in front of us, and suddenly, it started lifting this car with a father and son inside.
"They jumped out of the car before the forklift was able to flip it over, and he smashed up the car.
"I believe that was one of four cars that was targeted."
Video footage initially shows the forklift tipping a car upside down before it crashes to the ground as astonished bystanders looked on.
The video then shows the forklift smashing into another vehicle before a police car arrives on the scene.
Officers can be seen trying to prevent the forklift smashing into the car between Forde Road and Quay Road in the Devon town.
They then approach the forklift as debris from the damaged motors is scattered across the street.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the arrest of a man in his 50s.

Although a total number is not clear, it is thought that up to five motors were caught up in the rampage.
Thousands of pounds' worth of damage was inflicted.
A spokesperson for Newton abbot Fire Station said they had been called to deal with a fuel leak from a car in the Brunel Industrial Estate.
They said they discovered "an unusual road traffic collision being managed as a police incident, involving a forklift and a private motor vehicle."
They also added that "all persons were free and clear of the vehicle and were uninjured on the scene".
Firefighters removed the fuel from the area and isolated the battery of the car so it was safe to move.

Cash-strapped Government trying to flog half-built warships amid claims it can't afford to finish them

THE Government is trying to flog half-built warships amid claims it can-not afford to finish them. Military top brass invited Norway to buy £1billion frigates HMS Belfast and Birmingham, which are midway through construction. 2 Selling them would give Defence Secretary John Healey and the Treasury breathing space to find the time to pay for them, a source said. But they added that the Navy would have to wait years to get its promised eight vessels if Norway jumped the queue. They said: "The Royal Navy only has eight frigates, the smallest number in its history. 'It desperately needs these new Type 26 frigates as soon as possible. 'But the MoD budget is under so much pressure that selling the half-built hulls to Norway would give the Treasury breathing space to find the time to pay for them.' It comes after the Strategic Defence Review warned the Navy needed a 'cheaper, simpler fleet'. The MoD said Norway was 'one of the UK's most important allies'. A Norwegian source said: 'The government of Norway is in the final phases of making a decision, but no date has been set.' Trump demands interest rate cut as he blames Powell for shock US jobs slowdown

Donald Trump yesterday demanded a US interest rate cut as he blamed Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell for a shock jobs slowdown. The president lashed out at 'Too Late' Powell after payroll firm ADP reported that job creation in the world's biggest economy slowed last month to its lowest level in more than two years. The outburst came as evidence also pointed to a dismal jobs market in Britain. In America, ADP figures showed that private payrolls rose 37,000 in May, the smallest gain since March 2023. Markets had expected an increase of 110,000. More comprehensive official jobs data will be published tomorrow and will be closely watched for evidence that tariff uncertainty is hurting the economy. But Trump did not wait to go on the attack. On his Truth Social platform, he said: 'ADP number out.. 'Too Late' Powell must now lower the rate. He is unbelievable. Europe has lowered nine times.' The remarks are likely to reignite disquiet over Trump's attacks on the central bank's independence. He has previously rowed back on language suggesting he would fire Powell, after a market sell-off. Meanwhile, in the UK, a survey showed employment in the private sector fell for the eighth month in a row in May, the longest losing streak – aside from the pandemic – since 2008 to 2010 during the financial crisis. The slide was partly blamed on increased payroll costs, after national insurance and minimum wage hikes introduced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves took effect. But on a brighter note, the purchasing managers' index (PMI) figures suggested a return to growth for the private sector – thanks to a recovery for services, though manufacturing declined. Tim Moore, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said the sector 'regained its poise as receding concerns about US tariffs, recovering global financial markets and greater confidence among clients helped support growth'. It came amid growing hopes of a Bank of England interest rate cut, with markets last night betting on a greater than 50/50 chance of one in August, and another cut later this year seen as increasingly likely. Today, the European Central Bank is expected to cut its rate. It has already cut seven times since last June –not the nine claimed by Trump. Figures this week showed a fall in inflation in the euro area to 1.9 per cent last month – below the bank's 2 per cent target for the first time since September.

Tony Hudgell's mother could be released from prison just SEVEN years after being locked up for sick abuse that saw boy lose both his legs as a toddler

The evil mother who abused little Tony Hudgell so badly that he lost his legs is to be freed early from prison, just seven years after being locked up for carrying out the sick torture. Jody Simpson, 31, was jailed in 2018 for 10 years alongside Tony's birth father Anthony Smith after they were both convicted of child cruelty offences. Tony suffered from broken fingers and toes, torn ligaments and contracted sepsis after his birth parents carried out the depraved abuse when he was just six-weeks-old. They left him to suffer in agonising pain for ten days before taking him to hospital. He was on the verge of death when medics first saw him, and due to the extreme level of abuse he suffered, both of his legs needed to be amputated in 2017. But the Parole Board has agreed to release the monster mother from prison, The Mirror reported, after she had 'engaged with art psychotherapy…and victim awareness work'. Tony's adoptive mother, Paula Hudgell, criticised the decision and warned Simpson 'remains a serious risk to children'. Simpson was released in February 2024 but was recalled to prison in June last year following 'a relationship with a convicted sex offender'. Tory MP Tom Tugendhat has posted his support to Tony 'as he faces the early release of his abuser'. The board had in March rejected an application for the hearing to be held in public. They told the BBC their decisions are 'solely focused on what risk a prisoner could represent to the public if released and whether that risk is manageable in the community'. Mrs Hudgell wrote in a post on social media: 'After serving just two years on licence, she will be legally free to live as she chooses. This includes being around children—and even having another child. 'This situation underscores the urgent need for a national child cruelty register—a system to ensure that individuals with a history of harming children are monitored, restricted, and prevented from reoffending. 'Our children deserve protection. A register would not only help safeguard vulnerable young lives, but also bring peace of mind to communities across the country. 'It's time we put children's safety first.' Tony has previously been hailed a hero by Prince William and wife Kate over his extraordinary fundraising walks to help vulnerable children. Mrs Hudgell wrote in a post on social media: 'After serving just two years on licence, she will be legally free to live as she chooses. In addition to raising the impressive sum, the youngster also inspired an English law change, known as 'Tony's Law', enacted in the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022. Tony's Law calls for increased prison sentences for those convicted of child cruelty and neglect. A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: 'This was a horrific crime that saw Tony Hudgell mercilessly tortured by his birth parents and our thoughts remain with him and his loved ones. 'Now that the independent parole board has directed her release, Jody Simpson will be subject to strict supervision and licence conditions. She faces an immediate return to prison if she breaks the rules.'
