Lee says Korea a reliable partner of PH amid global instability

'This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Korean War. We will never forget that the Philippines was the first Asian nation to send combat troops in 1950—ultimately more than 7,000 strong,' Lee said.
Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-Hwa said his country is a reliable partner of the Philippines, recalling the Philippines' role in Korea's history as the first country in Asia to send combat troops to the Korean War in 1950.
At a luncheon he hosted for members of the Philippine media earlier this week, Lee said, 'Korea knows what solidarity means.'
'This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Korean War. We will never forget that the Philippines was the first Asian nation to send combat troops in 1950—ultimately more than 7,000 strong,' Lee said.
'Because our bond was forged in the crucible of war, it is natural that Korea stands as a reliable partner of the Philippines, particularly when we face deepening global instability, one that is fraught with fragmentation and uncertainty,' he added.
'As fellow maritime nations, we share an abiding interest in peace and stability, as well as upholding a rules-based order in the South China Sea and beyond,' Lee said.
Oliver Victor B. Amoroso, Senior Vice President and Head of GMA Integrated News, Regional TV, and Synergy; and Reina Anne S. Dimapawi, Assistant Vice President and Deputy Head of Integrated News Operations, attended the luncheon.
Lee thanked the Philippine government, the Filipino people, and the media 'for the trust you have shown in the resilience of Korea's democracy.'
'As you know, Korea has come through a period of domestic uncertainty following the declaration of martial law last December,' Lee said.
'With the inauguration of President Lee Jae-myung's new government, stability has been restored across the board. We believe this renewed confidence at home will translate into fresh momentum in our 76-year-old ties,' he added.
Lee said that after the Philippines-Korea Free Trade Agreement came into force in December, Korea has topped the list of foreign investors based on PEZA-approved projects.
'We expect even more good news in the months ahead as businesses act on the new opportunities unlocked by the FTA and the Philippines' CREATE MORE Act,' Lee said.
Lee said the two countries' defense cooperation also continued to grow with the Korean-built frigate—the BRP Miguel Malvar—getting commissioned in May.
'And with the 12 additional FA-50 fighter aircraft contracted in June, this active defense cooperation will help modernize the Armed Forces of the Philippines,' Lee said.
Lee said the Filipinos and Koreans also feel their connection through culture.
'Korean culture continues to bring our communities closer. I am glad that Filipinos enthusiastically streamed the latest Squid Game season and embraced the animated hit K-Pop Demon Hunters,' Lee said.
'Building on that excitement, the Korean Cultural Center is hosting 'Step Into the World of K-Pop Demon Hunters' from 18 July to 4 August,' he added.
' I encourage all of you to visit and try on the iconic gat (let me show you this), and create traditional maedeup knots and paint your own Magpie-and-Tiger folk art piece. It's a fun, hands-on way to experience Korea's creative spirit,' Lee said. –NB, GMA Integrated News

Salceda optimistic about PH entering into FTA with US

Economist Joey Salceda on Saturday expressed optimism that the Philippines will enter into a free trade agreement with the United States following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s White House meeting with US President Donald Trump earlier this week. Salceda made the statement after Marcos negotiated a zero tariff plan for some American goods entering the country in exchange for a lower tariff rate for Philippine exports to the US. 'When Marcos said we are offering you zero tariffs, that is an invitation we can do an FTA,' Salceda said at a news forum in Quezon City. The economist added that now that Trump is more open to bilateral trade talks instead of forming multilateral partnerships, 'it is no longer that impossible that we can work out a free trade agreement.' The former lawmaker recalled that the Philippines was not able to join the Obama administration-backed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) since there was a requirement to allow foreign ownership of land, which the Philippine Constitution prohibits. 'So when Marcos said, 'We are offering them zero [tariffs],' he was trying to [persuade] the US administration into a Free Trade Agreement,' Salceda said. Early morning on Wednesday (Philippine time), Trump announced a new 19% tariff rate for Philippine goods entering America. This is lower than the 20% announced in a letter earlier this month but higher than the 17% rate announced last April on what the US president referred to as Liberation Day. The US chief executive initially said the Philippines is going "open market" with the United States with zero tariffs, while the Philippines would pay a 19% tariff. Marcos, however, has since clarified that the zero tariffs on US products would only apply to certain markets, such as automobiles. The President also committed to increasing imports of soy, wheat, and pharmaceuticals from the US. Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs of the Philippines Frederick Go bared that American agri-fisheries commodities, considered 'sensitive' for the local sector, entering the country are not included in the zero tariff scheme offered to the US. Salceda, meanwhile, explained that only 31% of Philippine exports are subject to Trump's 19% tariff, while the rest—such as electronics, wood, metals, fuels, and chemicals—are covered by multiple trade agreements for exemptions. For Salceda, the effective rate was actually 6.3%, in favor of the Philippines. The lawmaker said the Philippines will benefit mostly from an FTA with the US, as it would result in cheaper products and an increase in investments from American firms. 'Definitely, from tariff savings alone there will be higher consumer welfare aside from the creation of jobs from new investments in manufacturing,' he said. Data from the US Trade Representative showed America's goods trade with the Philippines totaled $23.5 billion in 2024. Broken down, the US goods exports to Manila stood at $9.3 billion, while its imports amounted to $14.2 billion, resulting in a trade-in-goods deficit with the Philippines of $4.9 billion in 2024, up 21.8% year-on-year. Meanwhile, data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed the US was the country's top export destination in 2024, accounting for 16.6% or $12.14 billion of the total export receipts of $73.27 billion. — VBL, GMA Integrated News

PNP deploys initial force of 3k personnel for SONA security

'NO SERIOUS THREATS' SO FAR A contingent from the Manila Police District is on standby along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City as several militant groups hold protest actions against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s State of the Nation Address on Monday, July 22, 2024. VINCE ANGELO FERRERAS/GMA Integrated News The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Saturday said it has deployed an initial force of some 3,000 personnel in key areas of Quezon City, two days ahead of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s fourth State of the Nation Address. "Handang handa na po tayo. In fact, ngayong araw po ay naka-skeletal deployment na po tayo ng ating mga personnel na ide-deploy for purposes of the SONA," said PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo in a Dobol B TV interview. (We are ready. In fact, we have a skeletal deployment of PNP personnel for purposes of the SONA.) "But 'yung ating full deployment, madaling araw ng July 28, full force na po ang PNP,' she added. (But our full deployment will be on the early morning of July 28, when the PNP will be in full force.) Earlier this week, the PNP said that around 12,000 personnel will be deployed for Marcos' fourth SONA of Marcos at the Batasan Pambansa in Quezon City on Monday afternoon, July 28. Fajardo said the PNP has so far not identified any serious threats related to the conduct of the SONA. "Sa ngayon po, wala naman po tayong nare-receive na anumang seryosong banta. Pero hindi tayo nagkukumpiyansa, lagi po tayong nakikipag-coordinate sa other law enforcement agencies particularly po sa Armed Forces of the Philippines para ma-prevent po kung mayroon man po ang mga banta po tayong na-monitor," she said. (As of the moment, we have not received information about any serious threat. But we are not complacent, we are always coordinating with other law enforcement agencies, particularly the Armed Forces of the Philippines, to prevent any threats from arising.) Fajardo said some PNP personnel have been deployed on Saturday along Commonwealth Avenue. "Mga around 3,000 po 'yung ide-deploy natin. Maging 'yung mula Sandigan, papunta po doon sa Litex, ay meron na rin po tayong nakalatag at pati rito sa kahabaan ng IBP Road," she said. (We will deploy around 3,000 personnel—from Sandigan to Litex, and also along IBP Road.) Anti-criminality measures have been rolled out, Fajardo said, including police checkpoints and the Task Force Manila Shield. All classes in public and private schools in Quezon City will be suspended while a liquor ban will be implemented on Monday, July 28, in view of the State of the Nation Address. The city government earlier said road closures on that day will affect both motorists and the riding public. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
