The third session of the International Defence Conference 2025, titled 'The Sky is no Longer the Limit: Emerging Threats and Opportunities in Space,' examined the increasing significance of space in defence and modern warfare. With the growing focus on both threats and opportunities in this crowded, competitive, and contested domain, the world is witnessing rapid shifts in the strategic space environment, including a notable rise in satellite launches and the use of commercial satellites in active combat operations.
Held at the Emirates Palace and organised by ADNEC Group, in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence and the Tawazun Council, the conference brought together high-ranking government officials, defence policymakers, industry leaders, innovators, and representatives of multinational corporations.
H.E. Dr. Mohamed Alahbabi, Senior Advisor, Space & Cyber Technologies at EDGE Group, highlighted the growing capacity for satellite launches alongside the challenge of securing data. He stressed the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing in strengthening space systems, predicting significant growth in satellite numbers and military interest in space by 2030. He also underscored the critical need for international cooperation and global policy frameworks to manage space traffic and prevent orbital debris.
Clayton Swope, Deputy Director, Aerospace Security, Project & Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, emphasised the vital role of public-private partnerships and strategic investment in space, particularly in AI and propulsion technologies. He commended the UAE's efforts in fostering local innovation while balancing ecosystem development with global collaboration, noting the importance of clear regulations and policies.
Meanwhile, Frank Backes, Chief Executive Officer, Capella Space, discussed the rising real threats in space, stressing the need for greater cooperation between private companies, governments, and civil agencies to build resilient space systems. He highlighted the power of information-sharing and declassifying data to mitigate space-related threats and unlock space's full potential for disaster prediction and asset management.
Hasan Al Hosani, CEO, Bayanat, Smart Solutions at Space42, focused on the importance of declassifying information and strengthening collaboration, particularly through the UAE's public-private partnership platform. He highlighted the need for precise data to power AI-driven decision-making and human advancement, while stressing data security and the integration of multi-source remote sensing data.
The session also explored the development of advanced technologies for space situational awareness, missile defence, secure satellite communications, and resilient space assets. However, it also addressed counter-space capabilities, which are designed to disrupt or interfere with space-based services, posing significant threats to military operations. The discussion underscored the importance of nations establishing dedicated space forces, commands,strategies, policies, and alliances to navigate the evolving challenges in space security.

Among the standout startups this year is W.O.N Technologies, an Emirati company specialising in industrial communications networks, computing, and IoT solutions. With a highly skilled technical team and a strong track record of innovation, the company is using the platform to expand its presence across the region. As a technology provider, W.O.N Technologies aims to unlock new growth and investment opportunities, confident that the event will help accelerate its ambition to lead the MENA region in industrial tech innovation. Lootah Biofuels is another example of homegrown ingenuity, investing in waste-to-fuel innovation. Yousif Lootah, CEO of Lootah Biofuels, commented: 'Lootah Biofuels was founded on the belief that waste can become a valuable resource—and Make it in the Emirates proves that such innovation can be built here at home. Our first factory was entirely based on German technology, but our latest facility is now 90% locally developed. As a small company, this platform allows us to show the impact we can make when we combine sustainability with local expertise.' Meanwhile, Younes Al Jalam, Sales Manager at KYMA, said their participation aims to highlight the company's commitment to sustainability through its plant-based, biodegradable products. 'All our products are free from harmful substances such as parabens, phosphates, ammonia, VOCs, and phthalates. KYMA innovations are driven by the belief that sustainability starts with daily household choices—and using the right cleaning products is a vital first step.' Abdulla Albanna Meat Products Manufacturing, represented by Sales Manager Hussein Ali Younsu, is showcasing its range of healthy, preservative-free food products. 'Our goal is to meet growing demand for nutritious, high-quality foods. We're forming new partnerships locally and globally, and this exhibition provides a unique opportunity for consumers to experience our products and their health benefits.' Jawaher Alnuaimi, Deputy Director at Union Chlorine, added that the company is seeking strategic partnerships while showcasing its innovations in chlorine and alkali production. 'Although we were only founded in 2017, our use of advanced membrane technology and distributed control systems ensures not only high product quality but also environmental sustainability—with no harmful by-products or liquid waste.' These examples underscore the tremendous potential of the startups participating in this year's edition of Make it in the Emirates—a platform that provides visionary entrepreneurs the opportunity to showcase what they can achieve. Tawazun Council and ADNEC Sign MoU to Strengthen National Defence Events and Enhance the UAE's International Representation
Tawazun Council and ADNEC Group have signed a n MoU aimed at enhancing national level coordination in the organisation of defence and security events, while strengthening the UAE's presence on the specialised international exhibitions. The MoU was signed on the first day of Make it in the Emirates 2025 at the Tawazun Council stand, in the presence of H.E. Dr. Nasser Humaid Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of Tawazun Council, and H.E. Humaid Matar Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and Group CEO of ADNEC Group. The agreement aims to reinforce the UAE's position as a leading regional and global hub for defence innovation and advanced technology. It establishes a joint framework for planning and executing key defence-focussed events and unifying national efforts in international exhibitions under the UAE National Pavilion. H.E. Dr. Nasser Humaid Al Nuaimi stated: 'This agreement marks a strategic milestone in building a unified institutional framework for representing the UAE at global defen c e platforms. Tawazun Council, RTX and EGA Sign MOU to Explore Gallium Production in Abu Dhabi - Middle East Business News and Information
United Arab Emirates, May 2025: Today, Tawazun Council, the aerospace and defence company RTX (NYSE: RTX) and Emirates Global Aluminium, the world's largest producer of 'premium aluminium', signed an MOU to establish EGA as a new producer of gallium, a critical mineral used across global supply chains. This initiative will create gallium extraction and refining capabilities at EGA's alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi and make the UAE the world's second largest producer of gallium. Gallium has applications across many different sectors, including in the production of semiconductors, electric vehicles, medical devices and telecom infrastructure. For the defence industry, the supply of gallium is critical as it is a key component of defence products including advanced radars. This new agreement would secure access to this critical mineral for companies including RTX. Tawazun Council is spearheading efforts through its Tawazun Economic Programme, a strategic initiative focused on attracting cutting-edge technologies, accelerating knowledge transfer, and building robust national industrial capabilities. This approach is vital to reinforcing the UAE's industrial security posture, ensuring the country's defence sector remains resilient and competitive amid global challenges. H.E Dr. Nasser Humaid Al Nuaimi, Secretary-General of Tawazun Council, highlighted that the project aligns seamlessly with the Council's new strategy 2025–2028, which prioritises building a competitive national industrial base and advancing cutting-edge infrastructure to ensure industrial and technological security. Central to this strategy is attracting high-quality investments, expanding strategic partnerships locally and internationally, and empowering Emirati talent. He described the project as a pivotal milestone in developing the UAE's vital industries, positioning the country as a global leader in gallium production — a rare metal essential for sectors including semiconductors, military radar, electric vehicles, medical technology, and telecommunications. Dr. Al Nuaimi emphasised its strategic role in strengthening production and export capacities while establishing an independent national supply base and cementing the UAE's status as a forward-looking industrial hub globally. 'The aerospace and defence industry relies on stable access to rare earth elements,' said Paolo Dal Cin, senior vice president for operations and supply chain at RTX. 'Today's agreement puts us on a path towards a reliable supply of gallium, needed for production of critical aerospace and defence solutions.' EGA and RTX anticipate entering into an agreement to conduct a feasibility study for a high purity gallium plant at EGA's Al Taweelah alumina refinery, which processes bauxite ore into alumina, the feedstock for aluminium smelters. Gallium is found in trace amounts in bauxite. As gallium is an impurity in aluminium, gallium levels must be carefully managed in metal for the most demanding applications. Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium, said, 'Gallium is an important metal for the most advanced electronics systems but remains commercially challenging to produce. This agreement between Tawazun Council, EGA, and RTX makes the development of a new source of gallium in the UAE feasible, creating an additional revenue stream for EGA and a new industrial capability for the UAE in line with our nation's industrial growth strategy Operation 300bn.
