Wall Street falls while FTSE 100 regains losses after US economy shrinks
The FTSE 100 finished in the green on Wednesday while US markets slumped, following news that the US economy contracted in the first part of this year.
London's blue-chip index ended the day just in the green, rising just under five points to finish the day at 8,468, a 0.1% rise.
But on Wall Street, the S&P 500 was down 1% as European markets were closing, while the Dow Jones was down 0.74%, both recovering from even steeper falls.
The UK market also slumped during the afternoon after the news of a 0.3% fall in US gross domestic product (GDP) for the first three months of 2025, before eventually clawing back the losses.
Kallum Pickering, chief economist at Peel Hunt, said the fall 'is not the headline US President Donald Trump would have hoped for to mark his first 100 days back in office'.
He added: 'However, the first quarter GDP drop is down entirely to his administration's misguided trade policies – which had been signalled on the campaign trail.'
Elsewhere, Germany's Dax rose 0.1% and France's Cac 40 increased 0.4%.
Sterling was down 0.5% against the dollar at 1.3338, while it was 0.2% down against the euro at 1.1757.
In company news, Barclays' profits surged by nearly a fifth thanks to a boom in trading activity sparked by the US trade war.
The UK banking giant reported a better-than-expected 19% rise in pre-tax profits but it also said it set aside more cash for bad debts due to worries over the American economy.
The group said it 'continues to monitor the heightened uncertainty in the near-term macroeconomic outlook, especially in the US'.
Barclays has an exposure to the tariff woes and US economy through its sizeable operations in America, where it has 20 million customers.
Shares in the group fell 1.4% on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, drugmaker GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) said it is 'well positioned' to cope with any financial impact from changes to US tariff rules.
It came as the FTSE 100 giant revealed a rise in sales as weakness in its vaccine division was offset by growth in speciality medicines.
This came on the back of a boost from its speciality medicines division, where sales rose 17% on the back of strong demand for oncology, respiratory and HIV treatments.
Shares rose 3.7%.
The biggest risers on the FTSE 100 were Smith & Nephew, up 58p to 1054p, CocaCola HBC, up 146p to 3900p, GSK, up 51.5p to 1483.5p, Pearson, up 41.5p to 1196.5p, and SSE, up 48p to 1692p.
The biggest fallers on the FTSE 100 were Glencore, down 19.5p to 244.4p, Anglo American, down 98.5p to 2029p, Antofagasta, down 61p to 1633p, HSBC, down 23.6p to 832p, and JD Sports, down 2.16p to 78.58p.

Viktor Gyokeres sends message to Sporting after Man Utd handed new asking price
Viktor Gyokeres is 'furious' with Sporting CP after the Portuguese giants made the decision not to sell him for a reduced fee this summer. Gyokeres, 26, emerged as one of Europe' most prolific centre forwards last season, finishing the campaign with 52 goals in 54 appearances. It followed a thrilling first campaign in Portugal where he netted 43 in 50 appearances under current Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim. The Sweden international fired Sporting to a league and cup double in May and has remained coy on his future, even failing to rule out the possibility of another season at Lisbon. But privately, Gyokeres has fully expected to be sold by the club this summer. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. The former Coventry City star has a release clause of €100million. But last year, in return for him staying on for another season, Sporting agreed to sell him this summer for a fee below that clause. It was agreed if Sporting received an offer of at least €60m with a further €10m in add-ons, they would not stand in his way. Record report however Sporting president Frederico Varandas has decided not to honour that agreement. While the Portuguese champions are still waiting for official bids, clubs who have made enquiries have been told it will cost at least €80m to do business. Arsenal and Chelsea are among the clubs interested in signing Gyokeres having seemingly turned their attention elsewhere in recent weeks. Manchester United are also interested in signing him this summer but would likely need to raise further cash this summer to move forward with a bid with O Jogo reporting there still have been no official approach from Amorim's side. The situation has left Gyokeres 'furious', feeling the club have gone back on their word and abandoned promises made to him last summer. More Trending The striker has also removed references to Sporting from his Instagram account – although he also appears to have removed mentions of sponsor Nike and the Sweden national team. Gyokeres is a bunch of different strikers blended into one. He's a bulldozer, but he's also got that turn of pace and knack of finding himself in shooting areas. Some strikers, you can see they overthink things, but he'll shoot first and ask questions later. At 6ft 2in, he could definitely add an aerial presence to his game to take himself to the next level, but he's very good at using his chest as a magnet to win these aerial duels. He may not be as fearless as others when it comes to aerial duels, but he knows how to use his strengths to his advantage to hold up the ball and bring others into play. He's not someone like Roberto Firmino who is going to be dropping deep, so if Arsenal need to change certain things to get the best out of Gyokeres then they should. Zach Lowy, European football expert With Chelsea signing Liam Delap and Arsenal focusing on Benjamin Sesko, Gyokeres' options in the Premier League may have narrowed to United. The player has also turned down what would be a hugely lucrative move to Saudi Arabia. United have no European football on offer this season but that did not prevent them from signing Matheus Cunha from Wolved. Bryan Mbeumo has also favoured a move to Old Trafford ahead of Arsenal and Newcastle with United expected to make a second bid for the Brentford star soon. M&S resumes limited online sales after ransomware attack
Marks & Spencer (M&S) has resumed some online clothes orders six weeks after a damaging cyberattack that the retailer has warned will cost it hundreds of millions of pounds. "Select fashion ranges" are available again for the first time in 46 days for customers across Britain. M&S said that people in Northern Ireland were still missing out as its online operations got back in gear. Ransomware hackers broke into its systems in April by tricking employees at a third-party contractor, skirting its digital defences, according to the company. "We are bringing back online shopping this week," said John Lyttle, managing director of fashion, home and beauty. "A selection of our best-selling fashion ranges will be available for home delivery to England, Scotland and Wales. "More of our fashion, home and beauty products will be added every day and we will resume deliveries to Northern Ireland and Click and Collect in the coming weeks." M&S stopped taking clothing and home orders through its website and app on 25 April. Three days earlier, it said it was managing a "cyber incident", with problems for its contactless pay and click and collect services over the Easter holiday weekend. Last month, M&S said it expected online disruption to continue into July and forecast the attack would cost it £300m. However, it expected insurance would cover some of those losses. The company has refused to say if it has paid any ransom to the hackers.

M&S website resumes online orders after cyber-attack
Marks & Spencer has reopened its website to customers after being forced to halt internet orders in April following a damaging cyber attack. The retailer had halted orders on its website and saw empty shelves after being targeted by hackers around the Easter weekend. Customer personal data, which could have included names, email addresses, postal addresses and dates of birth, was also taken by hackers in the attack. Visitors to the M&S website were greeted with the message: 'Sorry you can't browse the site currently. We're making some updates and will be back soon.' The retail giant said that 'human error' had caused the attack, which is set to cost the firm around £300m, and chief executive Stuart Machin confirmed disruption could last until July. However, on Tuesday, a spokesperson confirmed that Marks & Spencer was reopening online shopping. In a statement published on social media, Marks & Spencer managing director of clothing, home and beauty John Lyttle said: 'We are bringing back online shopping this week. 'A selection of our best-selling fashion ranges will be available for home delivery to England, Scotland and Wales. 'More of our fashion, home and beauty products will be added every day, and we will resume deliveries to Northern Ireland and Click and Collect in the coming weeks. 'Thank you sincerely for your support and for shopping with us.'
