AAP govt ridiculed Sikh sacrifice with song and dance: Badal

Time of Indiaa day ago
Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal president
Sukhbir Singh Badal
accused the Aam Aadmi Party govt of committing an act of "grave sacrilege" against the Sikh religion by trying "shamelessly" to convert the solemn occasion of the anniversary of the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur into an "entertainment event" at Srinagar.
"This is shocking beyond belief," said Badal, adding that this act cannot be dismissed as an "inadvertent" blunder because the chief minister, the minister concerned, Harjot Singh, and several other members of this govt claim to be steeped in Sikh heritage and come from Sikh families. No one in Punjab, not even a non-Sikh, is unaware of the solemnity of the occasion of the ninth Guru Sahib's martyrdom, and none can think of it as an occasion for entertainment.
"Acts of sacrilege of Sikh scriptures and shrines are not only happening every other day, but the govt itself felt no shame or guilt in ordering its uniformed police to invade the historically sacred Gurdwara Sahib at Sultanpur Lodhi under direct orders of the chief minister. They opened unprovoked and indiscriminate firing against Sikh religious figures in our Gurdham, and since the CM himself was behind this sacrilegious police assault, no one has even been held accountable for the heinous crime," alleged Badal.

Reacting to reports about the performance of musical entertainment acts and items at an event organised by the Punjab government through its language department in Srinagar, Akali Dal chief Parkash Singh Badal described it as "a part of a deep-rooted conspiracy to dilute and belittle the unrivalled Sikh heritage."
In a statement issued here, Badal said, "The real motive behind these acts of sacrilege is to distance our future generations from the uniqueness of our glorious history and the religious legacy of our great Guru Sahiban."
"By organising song and dance events instead of recitation of sacred Gurbani at the most profoundly solemn occasion of the anniversary of the martyrdom of "Hind di Chadar" Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, the AAP govt has deliberately sought to ridicule a sublime occasion and to belittle the world's most unique sacrifice in the defence of freedom of conscience, religious tolerance, peace, and communal harmony. This is the ultimate disrespect shown to the great Guru Sahib and an act of "grave sacrilege," said the SAD president.
Badal demanded that all those behind the anti-Sikh mindset of this govt must be made to admit and explain the endlessly continuing series of acts of sacrilege against the Sikh heritage and Sikh scriptures in the state.

CAPF personnel injured during operations will get full benefits till retirement: Union Home Secretary

Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel who get severely injured during operations and have to undergo amputation will be allowed to continue in service till their retirement with all benefits, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan said on Sunday (July 27, 2025). Mr. Mohan said the government will ensure the best medical facilities and technology available in the world for 'limb replacement surgery' for CAPF officials and jawans and it will be ensured that loss of limbs is corrected as far as possible. 'Government will also ensure a minimum financial package for such personnel, and they will be accommodated in the organisation,' Mr. Mohan said, while addressing the 87th Raising Day of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Delhi. CAPF personnel have to adhere to certain physical standards for timely promotion and services. At least five CRPF personnel were grievously injured during the 21-day anti-Maoist operations on Chhattisgarh-Telangana border that concluded on May 11. Named 'Operation Black Forest', the combing operations were carried out in the Karegutta Hills (KGH). Hardships in the line of duty The Home Secretary added that a large number of CRPF personnel, including women, are deployed for law-and-order duty in Manipur after an ethnic conflict erupted in the State in May 2023. He said that during his recent visit to the State, he noticed that the personnel have to move from one location to another and face various hardships due to lack of adequate facilities. 'CRPF Director General has been asked to submit a report on the facilities required for the jawans, particularly women. Home Ministry will ensure best facilities,' Mr. Mohan said. He added that efforts are also underway to improve the living conditions at the camps in Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas. 'CRPF is playing a key role in ending LWE menace before March 2026,' he said, adding that 149 forward operating bases have been operationalised in LWE areas, forcing Maoists to retreat. The official said that LWE is on the verge of its end in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. He said that Home Minister Amit Shah mentioned at the National Security Strategies Conference on Sunday (July 27, 2025) that India's rising stature would lead to security challenges and the CAPFs would play an important role in thwarting those challenges.

Questions arise over ‘ineffectivecrowd control, missing cops at site'

Haridwar: The Mansa Devi temple stampede has raised several questions over failure in proper crowd control and management by Haridwar district administration and police, as per locals. Many pointed out that adequate police presence on the pedestrian route and the entrance for better crowd control could have averted the tragedy, adding that the situation was exacerbated by unauthorised structures on the route. Mohan Lal, whose six-year-old nephew Arush died in the stampede, said, "Only if there were proper arrangements on the temple route, my nephew would've been alive today. There was no police presence on the narrow route. It was overcrowded with people moving up and down at the same time, leading to the congestion. Also, no one could move forward... Even after the incident, help arrived late." People started to panic when rumours spread that the temple gates were being closed, Lal said, adding: "It was a terrible sight." Video clips of the stampede showed a huge crowd of men, women and children stuck in a narrow passage leading to the temple. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Retirement Villages Near Sylhe Sadar Senior Living | Search Ads Undo Dozens of people, seemingly glued to each other and hardly moving, could only manage to hold the children above their heads, news agency PTI reported. Mahendra Pratap Singh, an eyewitness who saw the stampede from a rooftop a little distance away, was quoted by PTI as saying that excess crowd was "the only factor to the tragic incident." Ajay Jaiswal, a local, was also quoted by the agency as saying that the administration should have been more alert. "Mansa Devi is the biggest centre of attraction for devotees in Haridwar after Har Ki Pauri. Thousands of devotees come here every day. The crowd swells during the month of Sawan as a rule. Being a Sunday, the possibility of a larger crowd was very much there. So, the administration should have been more alert," he said. Haridwar-based social activist JP Badoni told TOI, "This tragedy could've been averted. Local administration is solely responsible. This is not the first such tragedy in Haridwar. However, lessons from the past have clearly not been learnt. There are over 200 illegally constructed shops along the Mansa Devi pedestrian route, many of which draw electricity illegally. Despite the area being a reserved zone, the forest department never took any action. The religious trust managing the temple also never addressed the growing risks." Badoni urged immediate legal steps against those responsible. Meanwhile, assuring a comprehensive review, DM Mayur Dixit told TOI: "The temple administration has been directed to employ private security. Crowd management protocols at religious sites will undergo review." Soon after the tragedy, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami instructed disaster management secretary Vinod Kumar Suman to conduct a comprehensive assessment of crowd management, route planning and security measures across Uttarakhand's pilgrimage sites to prevent similar incidents in future.

Women candidates can use both maiden and married names on EVMs, says Maharashtra Election Commission

Pune: The State Election Commission (SEC) has allowed women candidates to display both their pre-marriage (maiden) and post-marriage names on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), provided they formally request it and meet the eligibility criteria, senior officials told TOI over the weekend. The directive, issued ahead of the upcoming local body elections in Maharashtra, is expected to benefit women known in public life by both names. But officials clarified that the name on the nomination form must match the name in the voters' list. Once the nomination is submitted, candidates may file an application with the returning officer requesting both names appear on the EVM. The application must be filed before the final date of withdrawal of candidature, the SEC stated. To support the request, candidates will need to submit a marriage certificate or a govt-issued gazette notification confirming the name change. In the absence of a gazette, one of 17 acceptable proofs — as prescribed by the SEC in a 2011 order — may be submitted. However, the official added that both names will appear in full on the EVM only if space permits. Maharashtra has reserved 50% of seats for women in municipal corporations, councils, nagar panchayats, zilla parishads and panchayat samitis. Of these, over 1,370 seats in municipal corporations and 3,885 seats in councils and nagar panchayats have been set aside for women candidates. Civil society groups and political observers welcomed SEC's decision. "This is a progressive step. In many Maharashtrian households, a woman's name changes completely after marriage. Allowing both names helps her preserve her identity," said a political analyst. A former PMC corporator said it would help women who are known by their maiden names in the area, and putting both names would be an advantage for them. "Since the SEC has announced it much ahead of the actual polls, I would consider giving all the documents to ensure that both my maiden name and the name post-marriage is included," the former corporator told TOI. Maharashtra is set for one of the biggest rounds of local body elections, covering 29 municipal corporations, 244 municipal councils, 147 nagar panchayats, 32 zilla parishads, and 336 panchayat samitis.
