Sabah govt to let law take its course after 2 reps charged
PETALING JAYA : Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor says his administration will let the law take its course after an assistant minister and a Gabungan Rakyat Sabah assemblyman were charged with corruption today.
'We respect the law, and we will let the legal process take its course. The GRS government will not interfere in any investigation or legal action against any of its government leaders,' he said in a statement.
This morning, Sabah assistant industrial development and entrepreneurship minister Andi Suryady Bandy, and Sindumin assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob were charged with receiving bribes related to mineral prospecting licence applications in the state.
Yusof is also the chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Bhd, the state government's investment arm.
Andi, the Tanjung Batu assemblyman from Umno, and Yusof, from Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, were charged with receiving RM200,000 and RM150,000 in bribes, respectively.
Businessman Albert Tei was charged with bribing them.
All three claimed trial.
Following the court charges, Hajiji said he would consider Andi and Yusof's respective posts in the state government carefully 'after all relevant information and reports have been received'.
The scandal surfaced last year following the leak of several videos purportedly showing discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in Sabah.

New judge to take over Dr Mahathir's defamation suit against Anwar
SHAH ALAM, Aug 12 — A new judge will preside over former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's defamation suit against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, following a reassignment of the case. According to Free Malaysia Today, lawyer Alliff Benjamin Suhaimi, representing Anwar, said Judicial Commissioner Zaharah Hussain — who was scheduled to hear the matter next week — had informed the parties that a replacement judge would be appointed. 'She told us that a new judge would be assigned to take over the case and fix trial dates,' Alliff was quoted as saying. According to the report, Zaharah had previously fixed the trial for August 18 to 20. Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali, acting for Dr Mahathir, reportedly confirmed that the parties will appear before the new judge on August 18, adding that the remaining trial dates have not been vacated. Zaharah is the second judge to be assigned after Justice Jamhirah Ali recused herself due to family ties with one of the lawyers. Dr Mahathir is suing Anwar for defamation over remarks made at a PKR congress on March 18, 2023. In his court filing, Dr Mahathir claims Anwar's speech implied that he was a 'scoundrel' who had accumulated wealth, avoided taxes, enriched his family, and fostered racial division — allegations he denies. He is seeking RM150 million in damages, a retraction, and a public apology, saying the remarks damaged his reputation and caused personal and political losses.

Bangladesh chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus accorded official welcome at Perdana Putra
PUTRAJAYA: Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh Dr Muhammad Yunus, who is on a three-day official visit to Malaysia, was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex on Tuesday (Aug 12). He arrived at 9am and was received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, followed by the playing of both nations' anthems. Yunus then inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment, led by Major Arifudin Mohd Yusof. Also present were Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, foreign diplomats and senior government officials. After the ceremony, Yunus signed the guest book before proceeding to a bilateral meeting with Anwar. Both leaders are expected to review the progress of Malaysia-Bangladesh ties, focusing on trade and investment, labour, education, tourism and defence, as well as regional and international developments of mutual interest. Anwar and Yunus will also witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) covering defence, energy, strategic and international studies, semiconductor capacity building and trade promotion. On Wednesday (Aug 13), Yunus is scheduled to deliver a public lecture and receive an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
