Florida QB DJ Lagway practices for the 1st time in camp while recovering from a calf injury
Lagway is dealing with a strained calf and was expected to take limited practice reps. He wore a sleeve on his left leg, the same one that caused him to miss a game and a half last season. He strained a hamstring against rival Georgia and missed the following week's game at Texas.
Coach Billy Napier has offered no timetable on his star player's return. It's the latest injury issue for Lagway, who missed spring practice with a shoulder injury after undergoing sports hernia surgery.
The Gators opened training camp Wednesday. Napier, unlike in previous years, closed viewing periods to media for the first three days.
Lagway, who went 6-1 in seven starts as a freshman in 2024, is widely considered a Heisman Trophy contender heading into this season. But he's barely been on the field at a time when he could be making significant strides.
He was limited during spring practice because of the right shoulder injury that could eventually need surgery. He resumed throwing in late April and said earlier this month at Southeastern Conference media days he would fully participate in camp.
But then he strained a calf muscle while running with the team last week.
Lagway completed 60% of his passes for 1,915 yards, with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2024. He took over the starting role after Graham Mertz tore a knee ligament at Tennessee in October.
Behind Lagway are journeyman Harrison Bailey and sophomore Aidan Warner. Bailey played at Tennessee, UNLV and Louisville before transferring to Florida earlier this year. Warner subbed for Lagway last year and was mostly ineffective.

McCarthy won't have one of his top weapons in his second career start. Addison recorded 70 catches for 911 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns as a rookie in 2023. Last season, the 23-year-old finished with 63 catches for 875 receiving yards and nine touchdowns as the Vikings went 14-3. Minnesota did not re-sign quarterback Sam Darnold after his breakout year -- 4,319 passing yards and 35 touchdowns -- so McCarthy could take over in 2025. The Falcons passed on the former Michigan quarterback in favor of Penix in the 2024 NFL draft despite signing Kirk Cousins to a four-year contract in free agency. Travis Hunter now practicing regularly on both sides of the ball for the Jacksonville Jaguars
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Playing both sides of the ball is now part of Travis Hunter's regular practice routine with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner and No. 2 pick in this year's NFL draft played offense and defense during training camp Tuesday. He wore a teal No. 12 jersey at wide receiver and then threw on a white, loose-fitting No. 12 penny when it was time to line up at cornerback. 'It's funny seeing him (go) back and forth,' quarterback Trevor Lawrence said. 'It's pretty crazy. Never seen anything like it.' Hunter had a minor issue with the sideline swap. Offensive teammates grabbed his baggy covering on several occasions, which helped them keep Hunter at bay during running plays. It won't be a problem during games because he won't have to change jerseys. Hunter first switched back and forth during a scrimmage Saturday night at EverBank Stadium, playing 17 snaps with the first-team offense and 21 with the first-team defense. He got similar work Tuesday, logging nine snaps on each side of the ball in 11-on-11 drills. It's the kind of versatility the Jaguars envisioned when they gave up a second-round pick and a 2026 first-rounder to move up three spots and select Hunter. 'It might not be every single day, but I would say it would probably be a little bit more normal than not,' coach Liam Coen said. The Jaguars planned for months to get to the point where Hunter was working interchangeably on both sides. They used him solely at wide receiver to open organized team activities in May and then expanded his usage as the team stacked practices. By the start of training camp last month, he was working a day on offense and then a day on defense. But getting him to do both within minutes, sometimes seconds, was the next step in his NFL evolution. 'Hopefully, more offense,' Lawrence quipped. 'Just the way he plays, the energy he plays with. Even just little things like interacting with the fans and the juice he brings into the stadium. That stuff does mean something. 'Not everyone necessarily has that personality, but he has something about him that's just special. The energy he brings and the energy he plays with and the joy and all that stuff — the way he runs around — it's fun to watch and it's fun to play with a guy like that. I think he's starting to play a lot faster now that he knows the system and can play free.' Hunter gives the small-market franchise more star power than it has had in decades — maybe ever. He caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns last season at Colorado and had 35 tackles, 11 pass breakups, eight forced incompletions and four interceptions while allowing just one touchdown. The Jaguars intend to use him primarily as a slot receiver on offense and as an outside cornerback in certain packages on defense. It's familiar territory for someone who played more snaps (1,461) than anyone in college football in 2024. It's unclear how much — if at all — Hunter will play in Jacksonville's preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday. Coen and his staff are 'still working through it.' He even texted Steelers coach Mike Tomlin on Monday night to 'get on the same page' regarding starters. Coen was an assistant with the Los Angeles Rams, who rarely played starters and even rested backups in the preseason, and with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who played starters in the preseason in hopes of getting 'some quality work.' 'That is the ultimate debate,' Coen said. 'It's definitely a difficult decision that we've been wrestling back and forth with a little bit, but we'll have a better idea (Wednesday).'

Four opponents ranked in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll highlight Texas schedule For the first time in school history, the Texas Longhorns are the preseason No. 1 team in America in the US LBM Coaches Poll. The hype surrounding new starting quarterback Arch Manning and the newly minted top-ranked team continues to swell as the historic season opener with Ohio State draws closer. Texas' schedule should set up very well for a run at the National Title. At least the regular season portion. While UT doesn't have the easiest schedule in the nation, it isn't the toughest either. Texas schedule ranks middle of the pack in the SEC. The Longhorns only play four preseason ranked opponents in 2025. The bad news is, three of the four are on the road. Texas plays at Ohio State, Florida and Georgia. UT gets rival Texas A&M at home in Austin at DKR. As we saw last year, the margin of error to get into the SEC Championship Game is small. But there should be two to three automatic bids that go to SEC teams if needed. Here's a look at the Longhorns ranked opponents: No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes | Columbus, OH | Aug. 30 This will be the first time in college football history the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation will face off in the opening game of the season. Of course, it was Ohio State, on its way to the national title, that knocked Texas out of the college football playoffs last year in the semifinal at the Cotton Bowl. This year the stakes are smaller but the hype is probably bigger. No. 17 Florida Gators | Gainesville, FL | Oct. 4 Don't overlook this trip to the Swamp the week before the Texas-Oklahoma Red River Rivalry Game in early October. The Swamp is a tough road environment. If the game is at night, it will be tougher than the Noon kickoff at Ohio State. The Gators also have a possible Heisman Trophy Candidate at QB in DJ Lagway. Lagway missed the game last season in Austin due to an injury. No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs | Athens, GA | Nov. 15 Texas lost to the Bulldogs twice last season, once in Austin and once in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. The Horns struggled on offense in both games. This will be the last of the three ranked road tests of the year, so Texas should be battle hardened by the mid-November. No. 21 Texas A&M Aggies | Austin, TX | Nov. 28 A year's worth of bragging rights are on the line when the Aggies face the Austin end of the rivalry renewal. Last year, freshly reunited in the SEC, UT and A&M played for the first time in over a decade. The Longhorns came out on top 17-7 in front of a raucous turned quiet Kyle Field crowd. That game ended up being for a spot in the SEC title game. No doubt 2025 will be the same.
