PETALING JAYA: Darren Lok may find himself playing more than one role for Sabah this season – not just as a key forward, but also as a mentor to one of Malaysian football's most exciting young prospects, Fergus Tierney.
At 34, Darren is one of the most experienced names in the Malaysian League and has been a mainstay in the Rhinos' attack since 2023.
With the 22-year-old Tierney recently joining the squad after playing in Thailand, Darren is embracing the chance to guide the rising star as he prepares for his debut season in the top flight.
'I've known Fergus for a few years now, and it's great to have him with us this season,' said Darren.
Darren Lok. 'He's a young player with loads of potential. He works hard off the ball, puts in the dirty work, and runs for the team.
'His playing style is quite similar to mine, and I hope I can help him take the next step. It's his first time in the Malaysian League.'
'He's done well in Thailand and I'm confident he'll be a real asset for us this season.'
During pre-season, Darren has been deployed more frequently as a winger – a shift from his usual role leading the line. But the veteran attacker is not just adapting – he is enjoying the change.
'Last season, I played quite a bit on the wing too,' he said.
'It's a different role compared to playing as a No. 9. As a winger, you face the goal more often and get the ball in different areas, which is quite enjoyable.'
Darren's versatility is especially important given Sabah's wealth of attacking options.
Alongside him and Tierney, Sabah also boast Bosnian striker Ajden Mujagic, speedy wingers like S. Kumaahran, Farhan Roslan, Maxsius Musa, Jafri Firdaus Chew, and promising forward Azhad Harraz Harun.
'It's exciting to have so many players who can rotate across the front line. The competition for places is strong, but it pushes us to do better.'
Sabah have been quietly building momentum through their pre-season schedule, testing themselves against the likes of Police (2-1), Kuala Lumpur (1-1), and Brunei (3-1).
With the league set to kick off on Friday, Darren believes the squad are in good shape.
'The new imports have settled in well, and everyone's fully committed. These pre-season games gave us a glimpse of where we stand, and overall, things are looking positive.'
Sabah will begin their campaign away against Kuala Lumpur at the Cheras Football Stadium on Aug 13.

From Malaysia to Portugal, towering defender Paarveen takes giant leap

Big break: Paarveen Waran in action with his new club FC Vizela. — Paarveen's Instagram PETALING JAYA: As the race for Super League spots heats up at home, Paarveen Waran is taking his game abroad – with Portugal as his new stage. The Australian-Malaysian talent has signed with Portuguese Division Two side FC Vizela on Aug 3, and will join their Under-19 squad. While he will not be featuring in the senior league just yet, Paarveen's new team are no lightweights as Vizela's Under-19s were crowned national champions of the Second Division last season. The transfer fee remains undisclosed. Previously, the 18-year-old featured for Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) IV in last season's Youth Cup, helping the team to the title. Standing at 1.92m, Paarveen is seen as a bright prospect, especially as he plays in defence. Paarveen is excited about what lies ahead of him. 'It's the best place to grow and chase my dream of playing for Harimau Malaya,' said Paarveen. Before Paarveen, winger Safawi Rasid also had a stint in Portugal in 2020, but it was only a loan spell with Portimonense SC from JDT before he returned home three months later. Apart from Paarveen, several other players have also ventured abroad in search of opportunities this season, including former Selangor defender R. Ruventhiran, who is now with Filipino club Aguilas-UMak. Meanwhile, Dion Cools is making his mark in the Japanese league with Cerezo Osaka. Naturalised Brazilian midfielder Endrick Dos Santos is also plying his trade overseas with Vietnam's V League 1 side Ho Chi Minh City.

Endrick ends journey with JDT and makes Vietnam his permanent base

PETALING JAYA: Endrick dos Santos (pic) is back in Ho Chi Minh City and this time it is for good. The naturalised Brazilian midfielder, who was linked with a move to Kuala Lumpur earlier this month, opted instead to continue his career in Vietnam's top flight. The 30-year-old Santos said he has officially parted ways with the Malaysian giants Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) to sign full-time with Ho Chi Minh City. 'I'm delighted with this opportunity and even happier that the club trust me,' said Santos, who represented the club on loan last season. 'Now with a permanent contract, I hope to perform even better than the last season and help the team with more goals and assists.' The midfielder played 24 matches last year, contributing two goals and five assists. 'Under the new management, we aim to fight at the top of the table. I'll give my best in every game to help make that happen.' Last season, Ho Chi Minh City finished 10th in the 14-team league with 28 points. Now, they are striving to challenge heavyweights such as Nam Dinh, Hanoi, and Viettel. Santos paid tribute to his time at JDT, crediting the club for shaping him into a more complete professional. 'Johor helped me grow a lot. When you train with great professionals and athletes, improvement comes naturally,' he said. 'I want to thank our boss (Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim) for the opportunity and caring for me. I wish him and JDT continued success.'
