Fahmi: Government considers mandatory AI content labelling under Online Safety Act

KUALA LUMPUR: The government may consider making it mandatory for digital platforms to label artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content under the Online Safety Act, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He said some platforms have already introduced tags to indicate when images or videos have been created using AI tools.
"We may consider introducing similar requirements under the Online Safety Act, which is expected to come into force, God willing, by the end of this year.
"This is especially crucial in addressing concerns about boundaries and the risk of misinformation and fake news spreading through social media," he said at a press conference here today.
At the same time, Fahmi said ministries, agencies, departments, organisations and companies must all understand the benefits, challenges and limitations of integrating AI into their respective operations.
Meanwhile, Fahmi said the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the Use of Social Media is expected to be tabled and adopted by Asean member states at the 47th Asean Summit this October.
He said the declaration would help Asean countries adopt common strategies to address the growing impact of AI.

Pakatan MPs briefed on issues relating to judiciary, tribunal, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: Pakatan Harapan MPs were briefed on various current issues, including the formation of a judicial tribunal, in a closed-door meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The PKR information chief said MPs were also given an explanation regarding Article 125 of the Federal Constitution. He said the explanation was delivered by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. Article 125 of the Federal Constitution refers to the appointment, dismissal and conditions of service of Federal Court, Court of Appeal and High Court Judges. "There was also (an explanation) regarding the formation of a tribunal and several related matters, that's all," he told the media after the meeting at Seri Perdana Complex, here on Monday (July 14). Fahmi, who is also Communications Minister, said further information regarding matters relating to the judiciary would be announced at the post-Cabinet press conference. Meanwhile, Fahmi said the nearly two-hour closed-door meeting session with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was well received by Pakatan MPs. The meeting was a continuation of a similar session with Barisan Nasional MPs on July 11 to clarify several current issues, including on taxes, rumours of RON95 petrol subsidies and issues on the judiciary. – Bernama

Fahmi: Judicial appointments issue brought up in meeting between Anwar, PH parliamentarians

PUTRAJAYA: The meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Pakatan Harapan ministers and members of parliament concluded after an hour and a half. Anwar, who is the PH chairman and PKR president, left the complex at 5.53pm. When asked about the outcome of the meeting, he only responded: "Very good." Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, whose vehicle stopped briefly in front of reporters waiting outside the complex, said the MPs were briefed on various current issues and matters related to judicial appointments. "Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (who is from Barisan Nasional) also attended to provide clarification on matters related to the Federal Constitution, especially Article 125, regarding the formation of a tribunal involving judges and some related issues," he said. Fahmi added that the meeting was well received by the MPs. "What was conveyed by the prime minister was positively received by PH MPs. "That's all. Let's wait for the post-cabinet meeting press conference," he said. Fahmi is the government spokesman and holds weekly media briefings after each cabinet meeting. Asked if former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli attended the meeting, Fahmi said: "I don't have the list (of those attending and not). I was seated at the back." Rafizi and eight other PKR MPs had recently called for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate what they claimed were alleged irregularities in the appointment of senior judges, including the chief justice. Pressed further about the other eight MPs, Fahmi responded; "Many came. A lot of them attended." Meanwhile, Berita Harian reported that Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who is a former environment and natural resources minister, did not attend the meeting. Nik Nazmi said he could not attend because he is currently in Singapore. "I am currently in Singapore... this trip had been arranged from the beginning," he said when contacted.
