United warned about Sesko after Slovenian striker is compared to Liverpool flop: 'Pretty similar player to...'

Benjamin Sesko had joined Manchester United from RB Leipzig for £74 million and the Red Devils are hopeful that the striker is able to deliver this Premier League season. Ex-Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann, however, has compared him to Darwin Nunez, who had a largely lacklustre run at Anfield. Striker Benjamin Sesko made his Manchester United debut from the bench in their season-opening game against Arsenal at Old Trafford. AP Manchester United, especially under-fire manager Ruben Amorim, have a lot of hopes tied to the attacking trio of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha after splurging over £200 million on them during the summer transfer window. United, after all, had endured an abysmal run in the 2024-25 season, registering their worst Premier League season ever by finishing 15th on the table. And their meant that they would not be playing any European football this year. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Amorim, who had enjoyed a trophy-laden stint with Sporting CP before his arrival at Old Trafford, understandably will be anxious for his new signings to deliver and help the Red Devils begin the 2025-25 season on a strong note. More from Football However, ex-Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann has warned Amorim's men that could turn out to be a case similar to Darwin Nunez at Liverpool. 'Probably a bit better than Nunez' Uruguayan forward Nunez had arrived at Anfield from Portuguese top-flight club Benfica for a sum of €75 million (£64 million) in 2022, and was sold to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal for €53 million (£46 million) earlier this summer after a three-year stint that was largely lacklustre. 'I'm not sure if Manchester United fans want to hear it, but I think Benjamin Sesko is a pretty similar player to Darwin Nunez. I think Sesko has got the body, he's got the height, he's got the pace. I think he's got a better touch than Nunez,' Hamann, a Liverpool icon himself who had starred in the famous 2005 UEFA Champions League triumph, told CasinoHawks. 'He's technically a very gifted player, but he's a powerful young lad. Nunez is probably the one I would compare him with in recent years. 'I'd say his finishing is probably a bit better than Nunez, but he's got to prove it. He did it at times at Leipzig, but he's really in the spotlight now at Manchester United,' added the 51-year-old, who was part of the German team that finished runners-up at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. Sesko had scored 39 goals in 87 appearances in a two-year stint with RB Leipzig before his high-profile transfer to United. The Slovenian striker had attracted interest from a number of top clubs during the summer window, and even rejected an offer from the Saudi-backed Newcastle United in favour of playing under Amorim at United, even if the deal came with no European football this season. Celtic Held By Kairat Almaty In Champions League Play-Off

Celtic's Champions League hopes are firmly in the balance after they were held to a goalless draw by Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan in Glasgow in the first leg of their play-off tie on Thursday (IST), while Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce played out a goalless draw with Benfica. The Scottish champions pushed Bayern Munich close in the knockout phase play-offs last season after finishing 21st out of 36 teams in the league stage. But Brendan Rodgers's team could not break down the champions of Kazakhstan, who have already come through three qualifying rounds to get to this stage and are eyeing a first ever appearance in the competition proper. James Forrest was denied by a great save from Kairat goalkeeper Aleksandr Zarutskiy right at the start of the second half from one of few clear chances that fell Celtic's way at Parkhead. At the other end, Brazilian Edmilson saw a chip from inside the centre circle for Kairat land on the roof of the net following a mistake by Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers. Daizen Maeda then found himself in behind the Kairat defence late on but could only shoot straight at substitute goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov. Celtic therefore have it all to do when they make the daunting trip east next week to Almaty, not far from Kazakhstan's border with China. "We're disappointed with the result and first-half performance. We didn't start with the intent and mentality we wanted to. We were quite passive," said Rodgers, whose team were booed off at full-time. "There's no doubt we can go there and win. Of course, you want to take an advantage with you, (but) it's still very much in the balance." Fenerbahce and Benfica played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their tie in Istanbul. The Portuguese giants, who lost in the last 16 last season to Barcelona, held on in the pressure cooker atmosphere in Turkey despite having midfielder Florentino sent off in the second half. Benfica therefore have the slight edge going into the return in Lisbon, but Fenerbahce are aiming to reach the Champions League proper for the first time since 2008/09. Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt look certain to reach the league phase of Europe's elite club competition for the first time after a stunning 5-0 home win over Austria's Sturm Graz. Kasper Hogh, Odin Bjortuft and Ulrik Saltnes all scored in the first 25 minutes for last season's Europa League semi-finalists. Hakon Evjen made it four early in the second half and a William Boving own goal completed the rout. Swiss champions Basel drew 1-1 at home to FC Copenhagen in heavy rain at St Jakob-Park. Xherdan Shaqiri's early penalty put Basel in front, but Gabriel Pereira equalised for the Danish side in first-half stoppage time. Basel had substitute Jonas Adjetey sent off late on but held out for a draw as an Andreas Cornelius goal for Copenhagen was ruled out for a marginal offside.

Newcastle United Host Liverpool Amid Alexander Isak Stand-Off, Tottenham Hotspur Test New-Look Manchester City

Liverpool can expect a hostile reception when they travel to Newcastle on Monday amid their pursuit of wantaway Magpies striker Alexander Isak, while Manchester City and Tottenham face off in an early examination of their ambitions for the season. Across Merseyside, a new era begins for Everton on Sunday when they welcome Brighton for the first competitive game at their new 53,000-capacity stadium. AFP Sport looks at the major talking points ahead of the second weekend of the Premier League season: Isak future hangs over Newcastle, Liverpool Isak is set to sit out the meeting between his current employers and his preferred destination as a stand-off over the Swede's future rolls into the final week of the transfer window. Newcastle insist the 25-year-old will not move unless they can source an adequate replacement and Liverpool meet their British transfer record price tag of a reported £150 million ($202 million). Liverpool have had one bid worth £110 million rejected with their business not yet concluded despite splashing £300 million on new recruits. Isak broke his silence on Tuesday, saying his relationship with Newcastle "can't continue" after losing trust in the club. However, the early season form of Hugo Ekitike has tempered the need for Premier League champions Liverpool to meet Newcastle's demands. The French forward, who rejected Newcastle's advances to join the Reds, registered a goal and an assist on his Premier League debut in Liverpool's rollercoaster 4-2 win over Bournemouth. The teething problems for Arne Slot's new-look side have been in stopping the flow of counter-attacks against them, but Liverpool should be stronger for the return of midfielder Ryan Gravenberch from suspension at St James' Park. Newcastle's lack of firepower without Isak was exposed as they failed to break down 10-man Aston Villa in a goalless draw on the opening weekend. It has been another frustrating week for Eddie Howe in the transfer market as his attempts to land Brentford striker Yoane Wissa have stalled. Spurs a reminder of Man City demons City's 4-0 demolition of Wolves on the opening weekend sent a strong message of intent after a season to forget. The visit of Spurs is a painful reminder of City's fall from grace last season as Tottenham ran riot with a 4-0 victory at the Etihad in November, in the midst of a run of one win in 13 games for Pep Guardiola's men. Guardiola said his squad has been infused with "fresh energy" after new signings Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri impressed at Molineux. But a tougher test lies in wait against City's bogey team of recent years. Spurs have lost only one of their last four league visits to the Etihad and scored at least twice on every occasion. New boss Thomas Frank has already shown his ability to adapt in very nearly masterminding a UEFA Super Cup victory over European champions Paris Saint-Germain before a late collapse. Tottenham's Premier League campaign also got off to a flier with a 3-0 win over Burnley. Everton's new era Everton's new season got off to a frustrating start in a late 1-0 defeat by Leeds. But the hope of a bright future is the club's new state-of-the-art home on Liverpool's docklands. After decades in the doldrums for one of England's historically most successful clubs, Everton are banking on the Hill Dickinson Stadium to help bankroll a change in fortunes. But the move from Goodison Park, which had been home of the Toffees since 1892, is also fraught with risk. Goodison's intimidating atmosphere played a big role in helping save Everton from the drop in a series of difficult seasons in recent years. On the evidence of Monday's defeat, the Blues need their new home to be just as much of a fortress to avoid another relegation scrap.
