PAS insincere about RCI on judicial appointments, says Rafizi

PETALING JAYA: Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli has accused PAS of exploiting his call for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) on judicial appointments. Rafizi said the Islamic party's flip-flopping on the issue within a single week demonstrated its insincerity about championing judicial independence.
Advertisement 'In the end, it is government backbenchers who are vocal about this issue because opposition lawmakers only want to topple the government so they can become ministers again. 'The issue of judicial independence is an issue which should be championed by all, regardless of their political affiliation,' Rafizi said in a video posted on Facebook. Rafizi also warned that PAS risked looking silly if it was not careful about its position on the matter. 'It's hard not to resort to political posturing when that's your only strategy. But PAS should be careful – if they ride the wrong wave, they'll just end up looking foolish,' he said. On July 6, Rafizi and eight other PKR MPs called for the government to establish an RCI to investigate allegations of political interference in top judicial appointments. Two days later, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party would only support the proposal if Rafizi took part in Perikatan Nasional's (PN) rally to protest against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, scheduled for July 26. On July 9, PAS's Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the party fully supported the establishment of an RCI on the issue. However, the following day, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the party would not support the proposal. Takiyuddin, who is PN chief whip, said the opposition bloc had no intention of backing Rafizi's proposal, given that the Pandan MP is still part of the government bench. The former law minister also questioned the effectiveness of forming an RCI at this stage, noting that the process ultimately rests with the prime minister. Khamenei: Israel's war aimed to topple Iran's system
TEHRAN: Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday that Israel's attacks during last month's 12-day war were intended to weaken the Islamic republic's system and spark unrest to topple it. "The calculation and plan of the aggressors was to weaken the system by targeting certain figures and sensitive centres in Iran," said Khamenei in a statement published on his website. He said the move was meant to stir "unrest and bring people into the streets to overthrow the system." Israel launched an unprecedented bombing campaign against Iran on June 13, killing top military commanders and nuclear scientists. Iranian authorities said more than 1,000 people were killed in Iran. The attacks set off a 12-day war in Iran responded with drone and missile fire, killing 28 people in Israel, according to Israeli authorities. On June 22, Israel's ally the United States launched unprecedented strikes of its own on Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz. Israel's attacks took place two days before Iran and the United States were scheduled to meet for a sixth round of nuclear talks which had begun on April 12. The talks have not since resumed. Tehran has reiterated that it remains open to diplomacy provided that Washington offers guarantees it will not resort to military action against the Islamic republic. On Wednesday, Iran's parliament ruled out negotiations without meeting certain "preconditions", without specifying any of them. In his statement, Khamenei said Iranian diplomacy and the military should excercise "care and precision" in the way ahead, without elaborating. --AFP

Russia attacks Ukraine with hundreds of drones, energy infrastructure hit
KYIV (Reuters) -Russia attacked cities across Ukraine overnight with hundreds of drones and a missile strike, hitting energy infrastructure and wounding at least 15 people. Ukraine's air force said Russia launched 400 drones and one ballistic missile, primarily targeting Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih and Vinnytsia -- three cities in different parts of Ukraine. Earlier, Ukrainian officials reported two people killed in a drone strike on the frontline city of Kupiansk. The large-scale long-range attacks targeted energy infrastructure, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote on Telegram. "We are now doing our best to restore everything in Kryvyi Rih, and power supply will be restored over the course of the day," The air force said it had shot down most of the drones, but that 12 targets were hit by 57 drones and the missile. Russia has stepped up attacks on cities across Ukraine this summer, regularly sending several hundred drones accompanied by ballistic missiles. The attacks were cited by U.S. President Donald Trump this week as a reason for his decision to approve more weapons for Ukraine, including air defences. "Russia does not change its strategy, and to effectively counter this terror we need a systemic strengthening of defences: more air defences, more interceptor (drones), more determination to make Russia feel our response," Zelenskiy wrote on Wednesday. The head of the military administration in the southeastern city of Kryvyi Rih, Oleksandr Vilkul, said Russian forces conducted an extended attack with a missile and 28 drones. He said power and water supplies had been disrupted in some areas. A 17-year-old boy had been severely injured in the attack and was fighting for his life in hospital, Vilkul added. In Vinnytsia and the surrounding region, eight people were wounded, according to Ukraine's interior ministry. In Kharkiv, a frequent target of Russian attacks, regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said at least 17 explosions were recorded in a 20-minute drone attack in which three people were injured. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said air defence units had gone into action for a time in the capital, but there were no reports of casualties or damage there. Russia has killed thousands of civilians in attacks on Ukrainian cities since launching its full-scale invasion more than three years ago. Moscow says civilian infrastructure such as energy systems are legitimate targets because they help Ukraine's war effort. Freedom of Information Bill expected to be tabled by year-end: PM

He said the bill is a vital step to building public trust and encouraging informed participation in the country's democracy. Advertisement "We will bring this law to Parliament by the end of the year so the public can hold us to account. "These reforms reflect our holistic and determined approach to building strong, fair and transparent institutions that serve all Malaysians with integrity," he said in his speech at the International Conference on Governance and Integrity 2025 here. Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki. Anwar said the government is also in the process of amending the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 (Act 711) to provide broader and more meaningful safeguards. "This includes removing previous exclusions that limited protection and establishing an independent Whistleblower Protection Committee to ensure effective implementation," he said. Meanwhile, speaking to the media after the conference, Azalina said both bills had been drafted. "We hope by next session (October), this session unable to make it. Everything is on track,' she said. In July last year, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran announced that the Freedom of Information Bill would grant all Malaysians access to information on any ministry or government agency.
