Lawyer says an Alabama teen who was killed by police was shot in the back
Authorities have not released police body camera video of the June 23 encounter or disclosed the name of the officer who shot 18-year-old Jabari Peoples in the parking lot of a soccer field in the affluent Birmingham suburb of Homewood. They also haven't released the findings of the county's official autopsy.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing Peoples' family, said at a news conference that a private medical examiner from Georgia who conducted an autopsy on the family's behalf found that the teen had been shot in the back and that there was no exit wound. Without the bullet and body camera footage that captured the shooting, Crump said that the preliminary autopsy was inconclusive.
'This family is grasping at straws trying to get the answers. And it is not fair, it is not right and it is not just,' said Crump, who declined to name the medical examiner.
Police said the officer approached Peoples after smelling marijuana and shot the teen after Peoples reached for a gun while they were scuffling. A friend of Peoples who was there contradicted the police account, saying Peoples didn't have a gun.
Police said the officer's body camera 'clearly captured' the details surrounding the shooting, but the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency hasn't released the footage, citing the ongoing investigation. A 2023 state law that governs release of police recordings says an agency may choose to not disclose the recording if it would affect an active law enforcement investigation.
Homewood Mayor Alex Wyatt urged the state agency to release the footage on Monday, saying he didn't have the authority to do so as mayor.
The family's attorneys criticized the mayor, saying he is legally allowed to watch the video and tell the public what he saw, or release official police incident reports detailing the events that led up to the shooting.
'Just show us what happened to our child, please,' the teen's father, William Peoples, said at the news conference.

Saskatoon police looking for vehicle in connection with May stabbing death of 43-year-old man
Saskatoon police are asking for the public's help to find a vehicle that was seen in the area of a May stabbing that left a 43-year-old man dead. Police previously said officers were called around 11 p.m. on May 18 with a report of a person with a stab wound near Avenue B South and Spadina Crescent. They found an injured 43-year-old man who was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries shortly after. On Tuesday, police said investigators with the major crimes section say a white Lincoln MKZ, with the model year between 2013 and 2020, was seen in the area at the time of the incident and believe the person or people in that vehicle may have information relevant to the case. Police have released both a surveillance image and a stock photo of the vehicle model, and are asking anyone with information to contact Saskatoon police at 306-975-8300 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. The 43-year-old's death was the fourth homicide of 2025 in Saskatoon, and was one of two during the May long weekend.

Major update after brazen shooting
Two men have been taken into custody in relation to a brazen shooting which left a grandmother dead in Sydney's southwest. Police allege three men approached the Ambarvale home of 65-year-old Kim Duncan about 11pm on Monday April 14, before a number of shots were fired in the direction of the house. Ms Duncan was inside the house at the time, as were her 34-year-old son and a 21-year-old woman. While her son and the woman were uninjured, Ms Duncan was shot in the leg. She died of her injuries at the scene while being worked on by paramedics. On Wednesday, police said they had arrested a 32-year-old man at a home in Atkinson St, Liverpool. Detectives also arrested a 19-year-old man at a home in Sudbury Street in Belmore., The two men have been taken to Bankstown Police Station, where they remain in custody. No charges have been laid. Police are also searching for a third person they believe could assist with the investigation. Police released footage of the moment the two men were arrested, their heads down as they were led to the back of the police van. One of the men wore a hoodie over his head as he was walked through the station, while the other was dressed in shorts and barefoot. Addressing media shortly after the shooting took place in April, NSW Police Superintendent Grant Healy said the family was 'very, very upset'. 'It's tragic … your mother and grandmother to your children has been shot by cowards that stood out the front of the house,' Superintendent Healy said. 'Somebody coming up to a house and putting shots off is totally reckless, and the consequences are catastrophic. 'We have a 65-year-old grandmother that's been shot in the leg by people that walked up and shot at her house.' It is understood at least six bullet holes were pictured in the front wall of the house. Superintendent Healy said he believed the attack was targeted but it wasn't clear who the target was, nor the motivation. Former US Marine Corps reservist charged in Texas immigration detention center shooting
A former U.S. Marine Corps reservist has been arrested and charged with attempted murder in connection with an attack at a Texas immigration detention center in which a police officer was shot in the neck, federal prosecutors said Tuesday. Benjamin Hanil Song, 32, is the latest person charged in the Fourth of July assault in which attackers dressed in black military-style clothing opened fire outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, southwest of Dallas, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Texas. Song, from Dallas, was arrested after a weeklong search and has been charged with three counts of attempted murder of federal agents and three counts of discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, the office said in a statement. He is accused of purchasing four of the guns linked to the attack, it said. U.S. District Court records do not list names of attorneys representing Song or scheduled court appearances. U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Texas did not immediately respond to an email asking whether Song has an attorney. The officer wounded in the attack has since been released from the hospital. Ten people, most of them from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, have previously been charged with attempted murder of a federal officer and discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence. Another person has been charged with obstruction of justice for concealing evidence, while two others were charged with accessory after the fact for allegedly helping Song get away. If convicted, most of the defendants could face up to life imprisonment, while those charged with obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact would face lesser penalties if convicted, according to federal prosecutors. The shooting took place as President Donald Trump 's administration ramps up deportations. The attackers initially set off fireworks and spray-painted vehicles and a guard structure, including the words 'Ice Pig,' according to a criminal complaint. This was 'designed to lure correctional officers outside the facility,' according to U.S. Attorney's Office. Correctional officers called 911 and an Alvarado police officer responded and someone in the woods opened fire. Another person across the street fired 20 to 30 rounds at correctional officers who were unarmed after they walked out of the facility, according to the office's statement. After the group fled, sheriff's deputies stopped seven people about 300 yards (275 meters) from where the officer was shot, according to a criminal complaint. 'They were dressed in black, military-style clothing, some had on body armor, some were covered in mud, some were armed, and some had radios,' the complaint said. A sheriff's office detective also stopped a van leaving the area and found two AR-style rifles and a pistol, along with ballistic-style vests and a helmet, the complaint said. The driver, the only person in the van, said he had been at the detention center. He said he had met some people online and drove some of them to the detention center from Dallas to 'make some noise,' according to the complaint. Song's cellphone's location data shows it was near the detention center from about 11:30 p.m. on July 4 and throughout the day on July 5, according to a criminal complaint. 'Though Song escaped by hiding overnight after the attack, we were confident he would not remain hidden for long,' Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Nancy E. Larson said in a statement. 'The fourteen individuals who planned and participated in these heinous acts will be prosecuted, and we expect justice will be swift.'
