TOKYO - Two British actors will play the lead roles in the hotly anticipated live-action film adaptation of The Legend Of Zelda (1986 to present) video game franchise, Japan's Nintendo announced.
The movie's release is set for May 2027, joining a stream of big-screen game adaptations from Super Mario (1985 to present) to Sonic The Hedgehog (1991 to present) that have stormed the box office in recent years.
Bo Bragason will play Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link, an elf warrior who swordfights his way through a monster-filled fantasy world, Nintendo said on social media platform X on July 16.
'I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen,' said the post attributed to game designer and Nintendo executive Shigeru Miyamoto.
Miyamoto, the co-producer of Super Mario, created the Zelda universe in 1986. Since then, the hugely popular series has sold more than 140 million games worldwide.
Its latest instalment, 2024's The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom, saw the titular character shed her role as a damsel in distress to be the heroine for the first time.
Bragason, 21, previously starred in British TV series like Three Girls (2017) and Renegade Nell (2024), while Ainsworth, 16, provided the voice of Pinocchio in the 2022 live-action movie of the same name and appeared in the horror series The Haunting Of Bly Manor (2020).

Before the announcement, online speculation had been rife that American trans actress Hunter Schafer, known for hit HBO show Euphoria (2019 to present), might be picked for the part of Zelda.
The movie, directed by American film-maker Wes Ball of the Maze Runner (2014 to 2018) film trilogy, is a big-screen first for Zelda, although the game was adapted for a 13-episode animated series in 1989.
Movie adaptations of hit video games have become big business, with Nintendo's The Super Mario Bros. Movie the second-highest grossing film of 2023, with US$1.36 billion (S$1.75 billion).
Among other titles being developed into films are Japan's Elden Ring (2022 to present) and US life-simulation game series The Sims (2000 to present). AFP

Hulk Hogan, the American sports and entertainment star who made professional wrestling a global phenomenon and loudly supported Donald Trump for president, has died at the age of 71, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) said on Thursday. "WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture's most recognisable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s," WWE said on X. It gave no cause of death. The bleach-blond, mahogany-tanned behemoth became the face of professional wrestling in the 1980s, helping transform the mock combat from a seedy spectacle into family-friendly entertainment worth billions of dollars. A key moment in that evolution came at the WrestleMania III extravaganza in 1987, when Hogan hoisted fellow wrestler Andre the Giant before a sold-out Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan for a thunderous body slam of the Frenchman. Hogan parlayed his wrestling fame into a less successful career in Hollywood, starring in films like Rocky III and Santa With Muscles, but kept returning to the ring as long as his body would allow. In 2024, he appeared at the Republican National Convention to endorse the presidential bid of Trump, who in the 1980s had played host to Hulk-headlined WrestleManias. Hogan said he made the decision to support the Republican candidate after seeing his combative, fist-pumping reaction to an attempted assassination on the campaign trail. "Let Trumpamania run wild, brother!" Hogan bellowed to a cheering crowd, ripping off his shirt to reveal a Trump tank top. "Let Trumpamania rule again!" Becoming 'Hulk' Born Terry Gene Bollea in Augusta, Georgia, on Aug 11, 1953, the future Hulk and his family soon moved to the Tampa, Florida area. After high school, he played bass guitar for area rock bands, but felt a pull to the red-hot wrestling scene in Florida in the 1970s. Many of the details of his career were showbusiness exaggerations, representative of the blurred lines between fact and fiction in wrestling. His first trainer reportedly broke Hogan's leg to dissuade him from entering the business, but he kept at wrestling, weight training, and - he later admitted - anabolic steroids. He gained in notoriety as his biceps turned into what he dubbed the "24-inch pythons." The "Hulk" moniker came from comparisons to the comic-book hero portrayed on TV at the time. Hong Kong actress Myolie Wu is vacationing with her family in the Maldives and, in the process, dispelling any lingering rumours that her marriage is on the rocks. The nearest MRT station is the Dhoby Ghaut MRT interchange, which is less than five minutes away by foot. Entry to the Istana grounds is free for Singaporeans and permanent residents (PRs), and migrant domestic workers accompanying families. Otherwise, there is an admission fee of $20 for adults and $10 for a child aged four to 12.
