Wrexham sign Man City youngster Callum Doyle

Wrexham have completed the signing of Manchester City defender Callum Doyle in a move that takes their summer spending past £30m as they look to secure their position in the Championship. The 21-year-old becomes Phil Parkinson 's 10th summer signing while City continue to trim their squad and bring in money by selling youth-team products. Centre-back Doyle is the second biggest buy in Wrexham's history, after Nathan Broadhead joined from Ipswich last week, in costing an initial £7.5m. Included in the deal is a buyback clause for City as well as a 25% sell-on clause should Wrexham decide to part ways with Doyle in the future. Wrexham had already broken their club record this summer to sign first Liberato Cacace and then Lewis O'Brien while they have also bought Conor Coady, Kieffer Moore, Ryan Hardie and George Thomason, besides bringing in Josh Windass and Danny Ward on free transfers. They've started the season with narrow back-to-back defeats but have shown enough promise to improve as the year goes on. On Doyle's signing, Parkinson said: 'We're delighted to welcome Callum to the Club. He's a talented young player with a lot of Championship experience. We're looking forward to him joining up with the squad and working with him.' England Under-21 international Doyle has never made a first-team appearance for City but has had four loan spells, playing for Sunderland in League One in 2021-22 and then Coventry, Leicester City and Norwich City in the Championship. He won promotions with Sunderland and Leicester and reached the play-off final with Coventry. On signing for Wrexham, he said: 'I'm buzzing to join the Club. I've been wanting a permanent move for some time now and I can't wait to get started. 'I've been interested in the Club from afar and kept a close eye on the journey and now I'm excited to be a part of it.' After going up in each of the last three seasons, Wrexham have lost both of their matches in the Championship, conceding five goals, as well as three in the Carabao Cup to Hull. Doyle's departure will follow James McAtee's £30m move to Nottingham Forest, while City have also sold other young players, in Jacob Wright, Maximo Perrone and Farid Alpha-Ruprecht. In addition, one of Pep Guardiola's summer signings, Sverre Nypan, has joined Middlesbrough on a season-long loan. The 18-year-old Norwegian midfielder joined for £12.5m, but City's plan was always to loan him out to gain first-team experience.

Playing alongside brother an 'unbelievable feeling'

Joel Colwill says he and his brother Rubin have achieved a lifelong dream by playing together for Cardiff City. The brothers have featured in every game in Cardiff's unbeaten start to the new 23, has been involved with the Bluebirds' first team since 2021. At three years younger, Joel has had to bide him time, but he has grasped his opportunity with both hands this season. "It's unbelievable. The first start I had with him (Rubin) was against Peterborough when he was captain. That's what we both dreamed of since we were five or six years old. It was a really proud moment for me and my family," said Joel Colwill."I remember in something like the 60th minute looking around the stadium, there were a good few people there, and thinking this crazy - both me and him playing in front of thousands of people. It was a surreal moment."After making his senior debut for Cardiff in 2023, Colwill was sent out on loan last impressed during his time with Cheltenham Town in League Two, before spending the second part of the season with League One side Exeter City. He believes that his time away from Cardiff playing regular first team football helped him develop and mature as a player."It was obviously very important for my career to go out and get those games. I think without those games it would be harder to play now," Colwill added. "I learned a lot about what men's football is about. It helped me make smart decisions, and how to use my body better. "The demands of the game is so much more when you're playing for a first team."After breaking into the Cardiff team, Joel is now hoping to emulate Rubin once again by playing for has nine caps for his country, and was part of the squads for Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, "He (Rubin) was always the first to do things. He went to Wales camps when he was 14. And I remember thinking that's what I want to do."The way his career has gone has pushed me to be the best I can be as well. "It's always been a competitive rivalry between me and him, we both push each other as much as we can. "Every footballer in Wales dreams of playing for Wales one day, and it's definitely something I'd love to do in the future. "Playing and playing well gives you the best chance to get into the Wales team. I'm just trying to play as well as I can, play as much as I can and whatever happens, happens."

Cacace and Thomason nearing returns for Wrexham

Liberato Cacace and George Thomason are nearing returns after sustaining injuries early in their Wrexham wing-back Cacace, an eye-catching summer signing from Empoli in Italy, was injured during his first Wrexham appearance as they lost at Southampton on the opening weekend of the Championship another new recruit, has not yet played for the Welsh club since joining from Bolton are also without Josh Windass - who signed from Sheffield Wednesday during the off-season - for around six weeks with a hamstring injury sustained during last Saturday's home defeat by West Bromwich Albion."People come in at different stages of their pre-season. I think Josh Winnass is a great example of that, who obviously came to us on the back of a disrupted period at Sheffield Wednesday through no fault of his. Subsequently he's got injured, which was a shame," said Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson."Libby [Cacace] gave so much in that Southampton game. He wasn't training with Empoli, he was on his own so, when he joined us, he missed a chunk and sometimes that kind of catches you up a bit. He's just got a slight hamstring tweak, nothing too serious. "If the game last week was a cup final, last game of the season, it's one we may have been able to just play him in."So we've just got to be cautious at this stage of the season because I feel he's going to be a really good signing for us and he's shown it already. "And George as well, just came in, moved to a new club, training may be slightly different to what he's used to and just a slight nick in the tendon in the top of his thigh and it's just taken longer than we anticipated to get right. "But he's shown really good signs as well in that period he's trained with us and it won't be long before he's back."Midfielders Ollie Rathbone and Andy Cannon and forward Jay Rodriguez remain sidelined with longer-term injuries.
