Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano erupts, sending ash cloud 11 miles in the air

Independent07-07-2025
Indonesia's rumbling Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki erupted Monday, sending a column of volcanic materials as high as 18 kilometers (11 miles) into the sky and depositing ash on villages.
Indonesia's Geology Agency said in a statement it recorded the volcano unleashing an avalanche of searing gas clouds down its slopes during the eruption. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The country's volcano monitoring agency had increased the volcano's alert status to the highest level after an eruption on June 18, and more than doubled an exclusion zone to a 7-kilometer (4.3-mile) radius since then as eruptions became more frequent.
An eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki in November killed nine people and injured dozens. It also erupted in March.
The 1,584-meter (5,197-foot) mountain is a twin volcano with Mount Lewotobi Perempuan in the district of Flores Timur.
Indonesia is an archipelago of 270 million people with frequent seismic activity. It has 120 active volcanoes and sits along the 'Ring of Fire,' a horseshoe-shaped series of seismic fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Huge 6.3 earthquake hits Indonesia in Pacific region's 'Ring of Fire'

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the eastern Indonesian region of Papua on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said, but a monitor said there was no tsunami threat. The epicentre of the quake, which struck at around 5:24 pm (0824 GMT), was around 193 kilometres northwest of the town of Abepura in Papua, USGS said. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. USGS earlier gave a magnitude of 6.5 before revising it downward. The vast archipelago nation experiences frequent earthquakes due to its position on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', an arc of intense seismic activity where tectonic plates collide that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin. A magnitude 6.2 quake that shook Sulawesi in January 2021 killed more than 100 people and left thousands homeless. In 2018, a magnitude 7.5 quake and subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi killed more than 2,200 people. And in 2004, a magnitude 9.1 quake struck Aceh province, causing a tsunami and killing more than 170,000 people in Indonesia.

Earthquake strikes just miles from US volcano that's set to erupt

An earthquake was detected just miles north of an Alaskan volcano that is set to erupt. The US Geological Survey detected a 4.6 magnitude quake in Petersville, about 48 miles from Mount Spurr. The Alaska Earthquake Center said: 'We have reviewed a M4.6 earthquake that occurred at 10:38 am local time, 52.4 miles deep and 34 miles N of Skwentna. 'This event was reported as felt throughout Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna region.' The USGS has received nearly 200 reports of shaking in the sparsely populated region. Mount Spurr is currently under an eruption 'Advisory' due to a low level of unrest with occasional, small earthquakes occurring beneath the volcano. This is a developing story... Earthquake swarm rattles Southern California with thousands reporting shaking

Southern California has experienced multiple earthquakes within just one hour. The US Geological Survey (USGS) detected four tremors starting around 1:15 a.m. PT (4:15am ET), ranging in magnitude from 3.5 to 3.7. The largest hit occurred around 2am PT (5am ET), 13 miles outside Rancho Cucamonga. More than 2,000 people have reported shaking since the first earthquake struck, with many located in Los Angeles. Residents have shared their experiences on X, with one saying: 'Pray for us in California that the big one doesn't happen. 'That was the 3rd earthquake in the last 10 minutes.' Others said the earthquakes woke them up as they struck in the middle of the night. These earthquakes follow another magnitude 3.5 earthquake that shook the Rialto area late Tuesday afternoon, which is just miles from Wednesday's seismic activity. This is a developing story...
