Angels reliever Robert Stephenson sidelined indefinitely by stretched biceps nerve
ANAHEIM, Calif. — A pair of MRI tests revealed no structural damage to Robert Stephenson's surgically repaired right elbow, but the Los Angeles Angels reliever was diagnosed with a stretched biceps nerve that will sideline him indefinitely. 'The good news is there's no major injury or anything. It's just a matter of how long it's going to take,' Stephenson said Saturday night before a game against the Seattle Mariners. 'It could be something that disappears overnight. It could be something that takes a couple weeks or longer. They're kind of tricky.' The 32-year-old Stephenson was expected to be one of the team's top relievers after signing a three-year, $33-million deal in January of 2024, but he missed all of last season after undergoing an ulnar collateral ligament repair with an internal brace in May of 2024. He returned with an encouraging 12-pitch, perfect inning against the New York Yankees on May 28 but felt some discomfort in the bullpen while warming up for a May 30 appearance in Cleveland, a game in which Stephenson was pulled after three pitches. 'You can't treat it like a muscle or a ligament or anything, so we're waiting for it to settle down before I start throwing again,' Stephenson said. 'It's just kind of a freak injury. It's weird. TJ Friedl and Elly De La Cruz drew walks off Arizona starter Ryne Nelson, and Encarnacion-Strand hit his fourth homer for a 3-0 lead. Will Benson walked and took third on Tyler Stephenson's double before scoring on Spencer Steer's single. Jake Fraley drove in a run with a forceout for a 5-0 first-inning lead. Eugenio Suárez went 2 for 4 and led off the third against Nick Martinez (4-6) with his 17th home run for the Diamondbacks' run. Lux's grand slam came off reliever Kendall Graveman, who needed 33 pitches to end the fourth after coming in with two on and no outs. Graveman gave up a single to Matt McLain to load the bases before hitting Friedl with a pitch to force in a run. Lux hit his next pitch out to right field for a 10-1 lead. De La Cruz doubled and scored on a Stephenson single in the eight-run inning. Stephenson finished 3 for 5 and scored twice. Martinez allowed a run on six hits in six innings with six strikeouts. US coach Mauricio Pochettino says 'We're going to have the possibility to win the World Cup'
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A third straight loss didn't prevent Mauricio Pochettino from thinking big. 'We need to believe. We need to compete like today and for sure we're going to have the possibility to win the World Cup,' the U.S. coach said after the Americans lost their third straight game, wasting an early lead in a 2-1 defeat to Turkey in a friendly on Saturday. Jack McGlynn scored 59 seconds in for the U.S., which was missing many regulars as Pochettino revamped his roster following a dismal performance at the CONCACAF Nations League final four in March. Turkey took advantage of a sloppy defense as Arda Güler and Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored in a 2-minute, 20-second span midway through the first half. While the U.S. had 60% possession and outshot Turkey 13-11, the Americans dropped to 5-4 under Pochettino, who took over after first-round elimination at last year's Copa America led the U.S. Soccer Federation to fire coach Gregg Berhalter. They have lost three straight for the second time in a year.
