NE natives in Israel on tenterhooks as Iran rains missiles
G uwahati: As tensions rise between Israel and Iran, people of Assam and the northeast residing in Israel are contemplating returning to India if the conflict escalates further. On Thursday, the Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv reached out to its nationals, including those from Assam and the northeast, to gauge their interest in evacuation flights from Jordan and Egypt. Preetam Regon, a researcher at the Volcani Institute in Rishon LeZion, said, "The Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv has started sending emails to Indian citizens to know if we are interested to leave Israel. We believe if the war continues to escalate, many Indians will leave." Rishon LeZion near Tel Aviv has seen numerous missile strikes from Iran. While daily life continues with supermarkets and public transport operating at reduced capacity, the targeting of schools and hospitals has heightened anxiety among residents like Preetam. His family in Jonai, Assam, has left the decision to return in his hands. "Shelter to protect ourselves is there in the institute or the place where we are staying. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch xu hướng AUD/USD? He recounted a close call with a missile landing just a kilometer away, despite Israel's efforts to intercept such threats. Preetam added that some of his friends in Jerusalem might also opt to return soon. Bikram Basnet, employed as a caregiver with a local family in Jerusalem, said while missile strikes were taking place at some distance on Thursday morning, significant tremors could be felt in the nearby areas. "It is far bigger than the attack of Hamas. Even as missiles are intercepted in the sky, glass widows and household utensils shake and walls vibrate," said Bikram, who hails from the Kalapahar area in Manipur's Kangpokpi district. Bikram said he is in contact with the Indian Embassy and does not intend to leave Israel immediately. However, he added that the inclination to leave is likely to be stronger among students, researchers, and construction workers due to disruptions in their work and studies. "There are many caregivers like us from India. We work indoors and that's why we are in comparatively safer zones. But the construction workers can not work during war time and students and researchers too are facing frequent closure of their institutions. So, they might return," he added. The Indian Embassy has assured its nationals that once they confirm their intent to leave, details about flights and transport will be provided. The MHA is organizing chartered flights from Jordan and Egypt to facilitate the return of those wishing to leave Israel. The embassy will coordinate transport from Tel Aviv to the borders and onward to the airports. As of now, there have been no reports of Indian nationals from Assam returning from Iran. However, state officials are closely monitoring the situation and the MEA's evacuation plans.

Elderly come out to vote in Ludhiana West, despite odds
Ludhiana: Defying physical hardships and age-related difficulties, elderly voters in Ludhiana West constituency turned out to cast their votes during the bypoll on Thursday, setting a strong example of civic responsibility and democratic participation. Difficulty in walking and age-related problems didn't stop senior citizens from stepping out and making their voices heard. For many of them, voting is not just a right but a duty, one that must be fulfilled regardless of the circumstances. "I came to vote especially to exercise my right. Everyone must vote. What is the use of having the power if you don't use it?" said Sinder Kaur, 60, after casting her vote. "It is better to vote and help choose the right person because then at least one can have peace of mind that they did their part." She believes that participating in elections is an important step towards accountability. "Instead of repenting when a wrong candidate comes to power, at least I can say I didn't contribute to the mistake by staying home." Her sentiment was echoed by Manju Jindal, an 85-year-old resident who was accompanied by a nurse to the polling booth. She slowly made her way to the EVM despite her frailty. "I think voting is a must. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like USDJPY đang đi lên không? IC Markets Đăng ký Undo I could have stayed home. Difficulties in walking shouldn't be an excuse as each vote matters," she said. Another elderly voter, MC Bhatia, 85, a resident of Green Park, was also accompanied by someone said he was determined to vote even though he couldn't walk without assistance. "I came with someone's help, because voting is a must." When asked he could have rested due to rather hot weather, she said weather and for that matter nothing should deter anyone from voting. In some areas, senior citizens were among the first to arrive at polling booths in the morning. Their commitment to democracy stands in stark contrast to the apathy seen due to less than 50% voter turnout.

Banner of Pen Co-operative Urban Bank scam accused with Maharashtra CM Fadnavis raises brows
Navi Mumbai: Even as nearly two lakh depositors are yet to get their money back 15 years after the Rs 758-crore Pen Co-operative Urban Bank scam unearthed, a banner featuring the main accused, former chairman of the bank Shishir Dharkar, alongside chief minister Devendra Fadanvis and his cabinet colleague Ashish Shelar has come up at a key junction in the township. The banner thanks Fadnavis for the Bombay high court stay on the use of plaster of Paris Ganpati idols. Pen taluka and the township are famous for Ganesh idols. Through this banner, Dharkar is attempting to boost his political image as well as that of his supporters, claim local activists. Dharkar was the chairman when the bank went into trouble between 2000 and 2010 over bad loans and without insurance renewal to save the depositors getting basic deposit amount. He has been accused of allegedly opening 685 fake loan accounts in various branches of the bank by manipulating bank records and withdrawing the funds for personal gains. Naren Jadhav, working president of the depositors' body Pen Urban Bank Thevidar Sangharsh Samiti, alleged, "We are surprised to see how such a banner involving the bank scam accused is being erected while the depositors and their families are still suffering." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The Samiti's demand for a cut-off date to recover the money has not been accepted during the HC-appointed committee meeting on Wednesday. "Our request for a timeline to recover the Rs 598.7 crore has been turned down by the committee set up by the HC in 2015. We will now have to again approach HC," Jadhav said. Dharkar was former president of Pen Municipal Council, who formed his own political party. He joined Shiv Sena (UBT) and later quit.
