
In quantum, noise may not be the villain after all

once famously called 'spooky action at a distance.' In normal circumstances, quantum noise is seen as the enemy of entanglement. It causes decoherence, where the special link between particles breaks down.
However, scientists at the
Raman Research Institute
(
RRI
), Bengaluru, working with collaborators from IISc, IISER-Kolkata and the
University of Calgary
, have discovered a twist. A lesser-known form of entanglement, called intraparticle entanglement, where different properties of the same particle are entangled, can actually survive, revive, and even be created by noise.
'Noise does not always destroy quantum correlations. Under the right conditions, it can build them too,' said Animesh Sinha Roy, lead author and post-doctoral fellow at RRI. The team derived an exact mathematical formula to predict how this intraparticle entanglement behaves in the presence of noise, specifically amplitude damping, which is similar to energy loss in quantum systems.

When the same tests were applied to the usual interparticle entanglement between two separate particles, the entanglement simply decayed. No revival or creation was seen.
This robustness of intraparticle entanglement under noise could help scientists develop more stable and practical quantum systems, useful for technologies like quantum computing and communication. 'Our next step is to build an experiment using single photons to explore this further,' Prof Urbasi Sinha, head of the Quantum Information and Computing lab at RRI, said.
The team's findings, published in Frontiers in Quantum Science and Technology, used the Global Noise Model, where the particle is treated as a whole. This approach is more realistic because, in real life, all parts of a particle interact with the same environment.
The work is part of the India-Trento Programme on Advanced Research and is supported by the National Quantum Mission.

Centre urged to strengthen CIIL for protection and promotion of language studies
G.K. Panikkar, director, International School of Dravidian Linguistics, Thiruvananthapuram, on Thursday said that the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru, has the potential to become the world's topmost institution in the field of language-related study and research and in finding out solutions to language-related problems. 'For sustainable development of Indian languages and for protection of the cultural ethos of Indian people, I appeal to the Government of India to strengthen the CIIL, giving it necessary freedom, and academic, financial and administration support,' he said, in his address as the chief guest at the 57th foundation day of the CIIL here. Mr. Panikkar praised the CIIL for its work in the protection and documentation of minor languages. Almost all tribal languages of India, including those with less than 10,000 speakers had been analysed by CIIL researchers, who prepared grammars and lexicons for them, he explained. He further said that textbooks were prepared for primary classes to enable tribal students to have their early education in their own mother tongue itself, and then switch over to the major language of their respective regions. 'As a part of CIIL's role to promote multilingualism and its efforts for the effective implementation of the three-language formula, school teachers were trained in different languages — especially South Indian languages to the teachers of North Indian states,' he stated. 'I think this project successfully continues even now by expanding its scope to all the major languages of the country. It now trains teachers in second language teaching methodologies providing them with linguistics orientation,' he added. He said that the application of AI and other technological innovations may also be helpful to CIIL for solving many of our present-day problems. Similarly, steps towards equipping one's mother tongue for higher education such as the preparation of dictionaries of science terms in regional languages and so on are the need of the hour, he added. On the occasion, the 'Bhasha Sanchika' portal — a digital language repository of CIIL, which is described as a pioneering platform where language preservation, dissemination, and technology converges, was launched. The launch of the Bhasha Sanchika (Language Archive of India) marks a significant milestone in CIIL's ongoing efforts to safeguard India's linguistic diversity. Developed using D-Space, a widely adopted open-source digital asset management system, the portal serves as a resource hub for the promotion, documentation, and preservation of Indian languages and cultural heritage, according to CIIL. CIIL Director Shailendra Mohan presided over the event. Former CIIL Directors, language experts, and other dignitaries were present. The inaugural event was followed by panel discussions.

The museum team, though, hypothesizes that it belonged to an ornithopod, a small herbivore. It is also believed that this may be the oldest dinosaur fossil found in the Denver area. Following the latest major discovery, scientists at the museum are confident that there are more fossils buried in the excavated materials from the drilled core and have been combing through them to see if there are others.

India on 16 July carried out a successful test of the Akash Prime air defence system in the high-altitude Ladakh sector. The Defence Ministry confirmed that the missile intercepted and destroyed two high-speed unmanned aerial targets at over 15,000 feet above sea level. It helped counter Pakistani air threats, including Turkish drones and Chinese-origin aircraft, as part of India's multi-layered air defence response. Each launcher holds three missiles, each about 20 feet long and weighing 710 kg. A single missile carries a 60 kg warhead and uses a ramjet propulsion system, giving it high speed and manoeuvrability. The missile operates in 'fire-and-forget' mode and features command guidance. It is fully automatic, processes real-time sensor data, evaluates threats, and responds quickly. The Akash system is also part of India's larger Integrated Air Command and Control System . This includes multiple layers: from counter-drone weapons and short-range SAMs to long-range systems like the S-400 and fighter jets. Lessons from Operation Sindoor Akash Prime's performance in Operation Sindoor drew attention from both military and strategic circles. The system was credited for successfully neutralising incoming threats that targeted Indian cities and defence sites. Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, Director General of Military Operations, used a cricket analogy to describe the effectiveness of the system. The Akash-NG (Next Generation) version is currently under development, promising longer range and newer features. As of now, the Akash Prime's trial in Ladakh has not just validated technology. It has reinforced confidence within the Army and Air Force that India's defence systems can hold their own at the highest frontiers.
