Uprise and Gurobi Partner to Optimize Battery Energy Storage System Deployment in Croatia
Statkraft, the largest producer of renewable energy in Europe, needed a financial model demonstrating the project's viability. They turned to Uprise, a local energy consultancy and software development firm, for help developing a comprehensive route-to-market study.
As a Gurobi partner, Uprise was able to leverage the fastest solver on the market—a quality that was critical to the success of Statkraft's project.
'In the energy sector, speed is extremely important, and problems exhibit a high degree of complexity. For example, energy portfolio and electrical power grid optimizations are typically performed daily, often multiple times per day, and usually with strict time constraints,' explained Zlatko Ofak, Business Development and Innovation Lead at Uprise.
Using expenditure and market data, along with market and technical constraints, Uprise modeled the Croatian market and used Gurobi to generate an optimal trading strategy, financial projections, and key performance indicators, such as internal rate of return (IRR).
By simulating hundreds of potential market behaviors and operational trade-offs, the optimization model uncovered the best path forward—including a 12-25% increase in forecasted revenue due to the hourly multimarket optimization approach, plus detailed insight into optimal day-to-day market strategy approaches.
'With this study, we were able to analyze different market approaches and understand which scenario was best for us in order to move forward,' said Krešimir Benčić, Senior Project Developer at Statkraft. 'We now have the information we need to present to the board, and we got some valuable feedback that we will also be able to use if we move forward with other battery projects in the future.'
'We are proud to partner with Uprise to help companies like Statkraft navigate an increasingly complex energy landscape and develop solutions that are powering a more sustainable future,' said Duke Perrucci, CEO of Gurobi Optimization.

Energy Storage Group Closes Financing for Texas BESS Project
A global developer of grid-scale energy storage projects said it has closed project financing and completed a 10-year offtake agreement for a battery energy storage system (BESS) installation in Texas. Energy Vault, with headquarters in California and offices in Virginia, Switzerland, and Australia, on July 24 said the $18-million project financing for the Cross Trails project is the latest in a series of moves by the company after equity investments in new "Own and Operate" assets. The Cross Trails BESS, located in Scurry County, entered full commercial operation in June. The project has a decade-long offtake deal with power marketer Gridmatic. The installation also expects to receive more than $12 million in federal investment tax credit-related funds this summer as part of a previously executed sale agreement. Energy Vault on Thursday said financing for Cross Trails "delivers an attractive levered IRR [internal rate of return] of ~15% while building on the successful execution of Energy Vault's 'Own & Operate' asset management strategy, following the successful close earlier this year of the $28-million project financing for the Calistoga Resiliency Center microgrid in California." Energy Vault said it will report a quarterly increase in cash of more than 20% during its second-quarter earnings call on August 7, after an increase of about 60% in the previous quarter. Project Serves ERCOT Market Cross Trails is a 57-MW/114-MWh BESS that will serve the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) region. Energy Vault said the installation was completed ahead of schedule, "successfully meeting all construction milestones through effective project management and close collaboration among engineering, procurement, and construction teams." The project is providing energy and ancillary services to support renewable energy production and improve grid resiliency in ERCOT's territory. The offtake agreement with Gridmatic is the "first physically settled revenue floor contract to be signed for a BESS in ERCOT," according to Energy Vault. The BESS leverages Energy Vault's fully integrated solution stack of hardware, software, and service offerings. Cross Trails also serves as the first deployment of Energy Vault's second-generation B-VAULT AC product, enabling Energy Vault to deliver the system quickly and at low cost while also providing higher levels of system availability in the ERCOT region. The system is equipped with Energy Vault's VaultOS Energy Management System to control, manage, and optimize the BESS operations. "The successful financing of our Cross Trails BESS project represents another significant milestone in executing our 'Own & Operate' strategy, delivering strong returns that will generate predictable, high margin and recurring revenue streams," said Robert Piconi, chairman and CEO of Energy Vault. "Following our recent Calistoga Resiliency Center project financing and the acquisition of the 125-MW/1-GWh Stoney Creek BESS in Australia, this latest financing close demonstrates our ability to attract premium financing partners while building a diversified portfolio of attractive energy storage assets across the globe. With an attractive mid-teen levered IRR and a 10-year offtake agreement in place, the Cross Trails BESS is another example of our commitment to creating long-term shareholder value through strategic energy storage asset ownership and operation in key growth markets." Agreement With Gridmatic "Energy Vault's proven expertise and ability to develop and deploy world-class reliable, and cost-effective energy storage solutions makes them a perfect partner for Gridmatic," said Max Wytock, Gridmatic's CEO, in a statement. "This BESS will deliver increased grid reliability and affordability for Texas residents as load growth continues to accelerate. We look forward to a strong partnership with Energy Vault for years to come." Today's announcement marks the second close of project financing for Energy Vault projects, coming on the heels of the successful close of $28 million in financing for the company's Calistoga Resiliency Center project in California. The financing also follows Energy Vault's announced acquisition of the 125-MW/1,000-MWh Stoney Creek BESS in the Australian market. Energy Vault on Thursday said the company has a "robust pipeline of projects in development" within the company's "Own & Operate" strategy, with a "long-term vision for generating predictable, recurring and high margin tolling revenue streams with the goal of delivering sustainable, long-term value to shareholders." —Darrell Proctor is a senior editor for POWER.

NatWest on high alert over wealthy exodus risk
NatWest executives are on high alert over the potential exit of wealthy customers from Britain after Rachel Reeves's changes to non-dom rules. Paul Thwaite, chief executive, said the bank was monitoring the impact of Labour's policies on rich customers 'very closely' as he suggested tax rises could force its millionaire customers to leave. NatWest owns Coutts, the centuries-old private bank for wealthy individuals. Often referred to as the 'King's bank', it has thousands of rich customers with upwards of £3m in spare savings. Speaking on Friday, Mr Thwaite said: 'We're not at this stage seeing any meaningful change in terms of behaviour, but that customer base is very alive to policy change, be that tax or regulatory. 'We're monitoring very closely, but no meaningful change at this stage.' His comments come as thousands of millionaires have left the UK since Labour entered power last year in the largest exodus of rich people from any country in over a decade. According to research by Henley & Partners, 16,500 high-net-worth individuals will leave the UK this year because of the non-dom abolition by Ms Reeves. An overhaul of Britain's non-dom regime and more stringent inheritance tax rules have made Britain less appealing for wealthy foreigners, with some warning the crackdown risks creating the perception that the UK Government is hostile to wealthy people. Since the changes were introduced a number of high-profile figures have left, including Goldman Sachs' Richard Gnodde, Aston Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris and Norwegian shipping billionaire John Fredriksen. 'Strong economies need strong banks' There was no obvious sign of stress at NatWest from the changes, with its private banking and wealth management – which includes Coutts – reporting a 44pc rise in half-year operating profit versus a year ago to £201m. 'We're very pleased with the performance of Coutts and the wealth business. It does have some international clients though,' Mr Thwaite said. The Liverpudlian chief, who replaced Dame Alison Rose as chief executive two years ago, also warned that any hit to Britain's banks risks harming the country's economy. He said that Labour should be 'thoughtful about any signals that they can send in respect of policy'. He said: 'My view is strong economies need strong banks. I really want to use the bank's capital to invest in the business and also support customers. 'Ultimately, as I've said, that that will be beneficial to the UK. What's very important, from an investor perspective, is they have consistency, stability and predictability.' NatWest launched a £750m share buyback scheme and said it would pay out another £768m to shareholders as an interim dividend after the bank posted better-than-expected profits. NatWest reported pre-tax profits of £1.8bn for the second quarter of 2025, compared to £1.7bn last year. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism.
