After Stepping Down As India Head Coach, Manolo Marquez To Helm FC Goa In Coming Season

NDTV2 days ago
After stepping down as Indian men's football team head coach earlier this month, Spaniard Manolo Marquez on Friday re-joined FC Goa to helm the club for the 2025-26 season. FC Goa announced that Marquez has signed to continue as the head coach for the upcoming season, his third at the club. "No one forgets the Don and the Don never forgets home. Welcome Back Boss," FC Goa posted on their social media handle. "I was very happy during the previous two seasons, where the team showed consistent improvement each year. The level of organisation that the club operates with is not commonly observed in Indian club football, making FC Goa a very special club," Marquez said of his return in a club statement.
"It was clear for me that if I were to continue in India, it had to be with FC Goa," he added.
The Indian Super League, the country's top-tier competition is, however, on "hold" due to the uncertainty over the issue of the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement -- to expire on December 8 -- between the AIFF and the organisers Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL).
Marquez resigned from his national role on July 2 after reaching a "mutual agreement" with the All India Football Federation (AIFF), which was under pressure to fix accountability for the recent downward spiral of the national team.
The 56-year-old was appointed as India head coach in June 2024 for a two-year tenure. He worked in a dual role last year, also guiding FC Goa in the 2024-25 ISL season.
India lost 0-1 to lower-ranked Hong Kong in an away match of the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers on June 10, which left the country in danger of missing out on qualifying for the continental showpiece in 2027.
India logged just one win from their last eight matches under Marquez's tutelage, the lone victory coming against Maldives in March.
Marquez was initially signed for FC Goa in 2023 on a two-year deal, and since has become the longest serving head coach of the Gaurs, with a campaign spanning 62 matches across all competitions.
He will begin his third season at FC Goa with a desire to maintain a successful record, not only taking the club further in Indian football, but Asian football as well, thanks to the win in the Kalinga Super Sup last season.
To begin with, he will be leading the club in the preliminary stage of the AFC Champions League 2, against Omani Professional League team, Al-Seeb Club, where FC Goa will play host at Fatorda on August 13.
"Some stories did not mean to end...no, this is unfinished business. I am coming home to finish what we started," the Spaniard said.
"It is obviously not a usual pre-season for us. Generally, you get about six to eight weeks of training before you arrive at the first ISL game in good conditions, having played multiple domestic competitions already," Marquez said.
"We are in a special situation, but a great one for us at the club where we also have the AFC match to look forward to. It will be a difficult game against Al-Seeb, but we are, of course, ready to play against them and the target will be to be there with our best foot forward." On Marquez's re-joining of FC Goa, club CEO Ravi Puskur said, "When the opportunity arose to bring Manolo back, it was one of the most straightforward decisions we've had to make at the club. Over the past two seasons, he has not only delivered results but done so with a clear identity and a deep commitment to improving the group as a whole." This year, joining Marquez in his coaching staff are two new members -- Spaniards Marc Gamon as goalkeeping coach, and David Ramos as the Strength & Conditioning coach -- following the departure of Asier Ray Santin and Jose Carlos Barroso.
Gamon finished a two-year stint with Belgian club KMSK Deinze and reunited with Marquez last year.
For the 2024-25 season, Gamon was Marquez's goalkeeping coach for the Blue Tigers. They worked together again after coaching Hyderabad FC in the 2020-21 season.
Ramos, new to Indian football, comes with the experience of coaching clubs in Spain and China. The rest of his coaching staff, including assistant coaches Benito Montalvo and Gouramangi Singh Moirangthem, continue their roles at the club.

Kamboj added to India squad; Reddy likely to miss 4th, 5th Tests vs England

India have been aiming to level the five-match series against England by winning the 4th Test, starting July 23 at Old Trafford in Manchester. There has been a 10-day gap between the Lord's and Manchester Tests. While the 10-day break would have helped the Indian team recuperate from the heartbreaking loss at Lord's, the news coming out of the Indian camp is not encouraging, with just two days to go for the 4th Test in Manchester. While Arshdeep Singh injured himself while stopping a drive from Sudharsan during a practice session, Nitish Kumar Reddy is nursing a knee injury, which he sustained during a gym session. Meanwhile, Akash Deep has been suffering from a groin issue that he picked up during the Lord's Test. Fast bowler Anshul Kamboj was included in India's squad on Sunday as backup for Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh, both of whom are in a race against time to be fit for the fourth Test. Akash Deep, who played the second and third Tests at Birmingham and Lord's, is dealing with a groin issue. Arshdeep Singh has yet to make an appearance in the series and is also recovering from a thumb injury. Nitish Kumar Reddy all but out of the England Test series India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is uncertain for the fourth Test after suffering a knee injury during a gym session on Sunday. He featured in the playing XI for both the second and third matches. Selection uncertainty leads to Kamboj's inclusion While there's still no confirmation on Akash Deep's fitness, Arshdeep is reportedly unlikely to play in the Manchester Test. As a result, selectors decided to bring in Kamboj as cover. Arshdeep injured during net session Arshdeep injured his left hand while attempting to stop a shot from Sai Sudharsan during a net session at Beckenham on Thursday. His bowling arm required bandaging afterwards. Team awaiting medical reports before final call Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate noted the team will finalise its playing XI closer to the Manchester Test, depending on Arshdeep's medical assessment. 'He took a blow while bowling. It's just a cut. We need to evaluate whether stitches are required, which will influence our plans,' he added. Kamboj impresses with India A performance The 24-year-old Haryana pacer earned praise for his performance with India A against the England Lions in two warm-up matches. He claimed five wickets over four innings in Northampton and Canterbury, showcasing his ability to move the ball and generate bounce. Kamboj seen as promising prospect for the future Kamboj, a seam bowler known for hitting the deck hard, is viewed as a potential long-term asset, especially as Mukesh Kumar is on the wrong side of 30 and Harshit Rana is still adapting to red-ball cricket. Historic feat in Ranji Trophy boosted Kamboj's profile Kamboj rose to fame by taking all 10 wickets in a single innings against Kerala during a Ranji Trophy match in Lahli last year. He became only the third bowler to achieve this in Ranji history, following Premangsu Chatterjee (1956–57) and Pradeep Somasundaram (1985–86). Strong Ranji Trophy record last season In total, Kamboj picked up 34 wickets in six matches during the last Ranji Trophy season, underlining his potential as a standout performer in India's domestic red-ball circuit.

BCCI Asked To Name New Coach For T20Is, Ex Star Wants Gautam Gambhir Relieved

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to look at the possibility of having different coaches for Test and limited overs cricket. Currently, Gautam Gambhir is the all-format head coach of the team, having replaced Rahul Dravid at the helm last year. Harbhajan feels that having different coaches will allow both individuals to prepare for an assignment in a better way. He also suggested that having a single coach can lead to mental and physical fatigue since the individual is constantly travelling with the team. "Because your coach also needs time to prepare for a series. Like five Tests against Australia, then in England, then elsewhere. So the coach can prepare and set out what his team should be. The same goes for a white-ball coach. He will need time to prepare as well. If you overwork one coach for the whole year, he, too has a family and responsibilities. Traveling constantly with family isn't easy. So yes, if you ask me, splitting red-ball and white-ball coaching is a good move," Harbhajan told India Today. Harbhajan also suggested that if India can have different teams for different formats, they should also explore the idea of a coach each for Test cricket and limited-overs format. "I feel if it can be implemented, there is nothing wrong in it. You have different teams and different players for formats. If we can do it, it's a good option. It will reduce workload for everyone, including the coaches. So if it can happen, it isn't a bad option. The coach knows that focus is on T20 cricket," he added. Harbhajan said that someone like Ashish Nehra could be looked upon as a potential candidate to coach the T20I team. "Say if Ashish Nehra is the T20 coach, then he knows that his job is to make the Indian team champions in the T20 format, and Rahul Dravid knows he has to work on how the Indian team can be No.1 in Tests and ODIs," said Harbhajan.
