5 more typhoons may approach Hong Kong by end of 2025, forecaster says

Up to five typhoons are expected to come within 500km (310 miles) of Hong Kong over the rest of this year, the forecaster has warned, urging residents to brace for stormy weather and a possible No 1 standby signal on Saturday night.
The Hong Kong Observatory on Friday evening said the figure was above normal and predicted that the coming months would be rainier and hotter than usual due to warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean.
It also said on Saturday that a broad area of low pressure located within 800km of Hong Kong was bringing unsettled weather conditions to the central and northern parts of the South China Sea.
The low-pressure area is expected to drift north in the general direction of the vicinity of Hainan Island and the coast of western Guangdong and further develop.
The Observatory said it was monitoring the strengthening local winds and might issue a strong storm signal accordingly.
It also predicted a rainy Sunday due to the windy weather and the developing area of low pressure.
'Squally showers will begin to affect the territory [on Sunday] and showers will gradually increase later,' it said, calling on people engaging in water sports to be aware of the danger associated with rough seas.

Spain sends 500 extra soldiers to fight wildfires as mercury nears 45 degrees

Spain is deploying a further 500 soldiers to battle wildfires that have torn through parched woodland during a prolonged spell of scorching weather, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Sunday. The decision to add to the more than 1,400 troops already on wildfire duty came as authorities struggled to contain forest blazes, especially in the northwestern Galicia region, and awaited the arrival of promised aircraft reinforcements from other European countries. Firefighters are tackling 12 major wildfires in Galicia, all of them near the city of Ourense, the head of the Galician regional government Alfonso Rueda told a press conference with Sánchez. 'Homes are still under threat so we have lockdowns in place and are carrying out evacuations,' Rueda said. Galicia has been battling the spreading flames for more than a week. Residents hold fire beaters and tree branches as they gather to help extinguish a wildfire in Veiga das Meas, near Verin, Ourense province, in Galicia, Spain, on Saturday. The No 1 typhoon signal will remain in force in Hong Kong at least until 8pm on Sunday, while some classes were suspended in neighbouring Macau due to the tropical depression. The Hong Kong Observatory said the tropical depression would remain at least 600 kilometres (373 miles) from the city on Sunday morning. 'Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds are occasionally strong offshore and on high ground,' it said. 'The need for issuing the No 3 strong wind signal thereafter depends on the distance between associated strong winds and the Pearl River Delta, and the change in local winds.' Rainbands associated with the tropical depression affected the coastal areas of Guangdong on Sunday. There will be occasional squally showers with thunderstorms in Hong Kong. Macau's Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau issued a No 3 typhoon signal at noon on Sunday, which it said would remain in effect throughout the day.

Standby Signal No 1 to remain until 8pm: HKO

Standby Signal No 1 to remain until 8pm: HKO Forecasters said whether the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 would be needed depended on factors such as the change in local winds. Image courtesy of the Observatory The Observatory on Sunday said that the Standby Signal No. 1 would remain in force until at least 8pm, as a tropical depression keeps its distance from Hong Kong. Forecasters said the storm was expected to stay some 600 kilometres away from the SAR, and therefore the standby signal would remain in force. "The need for issuance of the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 thereafter depends on the distance between its associated strong winds and the Pearl River Estuary, and the change in local winds," the Observatory said in a statement. Forecasters warned that local winds are expected to be occasionally strong offshore and on high ground, due to the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China. They also expected squally showers and thunderstorms to affect Hong Kong, as seas will be rough with swells. The Observatory issued the standby signal at 10.20pm on Saturday.
