5 more typhoons may approach Hong Kong by end of 2025, forecaster says
The Hong Kong Observatory on Friday evening said the figure was above normal and predicted that the coming months would be rainier and hotter than usual due to warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean.
It also said on Saturday that a broad area of low pressure located within 800km of Hong Kong was bringing unsettled weather conditions to the central and northern parts of the South China Sea.
The low-pressure area is expected to drift north in the general direction of the vicinity of Hainan Island and the coast of western Guangdong and further develop.
The Observatory said it was monitoring the strengthening local winds and might issue a strong storm signal accordingly.
It also predicted a rainy Sunday due to the windy weather and the developing area of low pressure.
'Squally showers will begin to affect the territory [on Sunday] and showers will gradually increase later,' it said, calling on people engaging in water sports to be aware of the danger associated with rough seas.

No 1 typhoon signal in Hong Kong to remain in force until 8pm on Sunday

The No 1 typhoon signal will remain in force in Hong Kong at least until 8pm on Sunday, while some classes were suspended in neighbouring Macau due to the tropical depression. The Hong Kong Observatory said the tropical depression would remain at least 600 kilometres (373 miles) from the city on Sunday morning. 'Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds are occasionally strong offshore and on high ground,' it said. 'The need for issuing the No 3 strong wind signal thereafter depends on the distance between associated strong winds and the Pearl River Delta, and the change in local winds.' Rainbands associated with the tropical depression affected the coastal areas of Guangdong on Sunday. There will be occasional squally showers with thunderstorms in Hong Kong. Macau's Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau issued a No 3 typhoon signal at noon on Sunday, which it said would remain in effect throughout the day.

Forecasters said the storm was expected to stay some 600 kilometres away from the SAR, and therefore the standby signal would remain in force. "The need for issuance of the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 thereafter depends on the distance between its associated strong winds and the Pearl River Estuary, and the change in local winds," the Observatory said in a statement. Forecasters warned that local winds are expected to be occasionally strong offshore and on high ground, due to the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China. They also expected squally showers and thunderstorms to affect Hong Kong, as seas will be rough with swells. The Observatory issued the standby signal at 10.20pm on Saturday.
