Google Gemini now automatically summarises your Gmail emails

Google has been steadily injecting AI features into Gmail. Last year, the tech giant integrated Gemini into Gmail, allowing users to leverage the power of generative AI to get a summarised version of individual messages or long threads.
This was useful for people who wanted to catch up on a long conversation, especially on small-screen devices like smartphones, but it required users to open the email and tap on the 'Summarize this email' button that appears below the email title.
However, Google, on Thursday, May 29, announced that 'summaries will be available at the top of the email content for messages where a summary is helpful, such as longer email threads or messages with several replies.' This means that Gmail will now automatically show a summary of the email created by Gemini wherever it thinks is useful. Google says Gemini will also dynamically update to reflect any updates to the email conversation.
If an email or thread does not automatically generate a summary, Google says you can resort to the Gemini sidebar or tap on the Summarise this email button.
As of now, this functionality seems to be limited to English and only works with the Android and iOS Gmail apps. Also, the tech giant says the new functionality will be rolling out gradually to everyone in the coming days, so it might take a while before Gemini starts automatically summarising emails for you. Note that this feature will only be available for Google Workspace users, Google One AI Premium subscribers, Gemini Education and Gemini Education Premium customers.
Announced as part of the May Workspace feature drop, Google is also rolling out Gemini summaries in Google Chat's Home view and a new summary building block in Google Docs. NotebookLM, the AI-powered research tool, is also getting interactive Mind Maps, which can help you discover how different ideas relate to each other.

Perplexity Labs: AI giant's new tool creates tables, graphs, and simple web apps

Artificial intelligence (AI) company Perplexity has unveiled a new tool, "Perplexity Labs," which it describes as a "24x7 dedicated answering machine" for users. Labs can generate reports, spreadsheets, dashboards, and simple web applications. The company states that Labs performs 10 minutes or more of self-supervised work, leveraging a suite of tools including deep web browse, code execution, and chart and image creation, to transform users' ideas into tangible output. Perplexity claims Labs can condense days of work and extensive research into just 10 minutes. Pro subscribers can access Labs across Perplexity's web, iOS, and Android applications, with release for Mac and Windows apps planned soon. How it works Code Writing: Similar to many AI applications, Labs writes and executes code to manage tasks such as structuring data, applying formulas, and creating charts, text documents, or spreadsheets. App Creation: Perplexity indicates that Labs can develop and deploy simple interactive web applications directly within an "App" tab in your project. This functionality allows for the creation of basic dashboards, slideshows, and websites without requiring external development tools. In other news It was reported earlier in May that Perplexity AI is in advanced talks to raise $500 million in a funding round, potentially valuing the startup at $14 billion. Venture capital firm Accel is reportedly set to lead this round. Perplexity's latest launch coincides with growing concerns about AI's potential impact on employment, specifically the risk of a "jobs bloodbath" and the replacement of junior white-collar positions. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently told Axios that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs and push unemployment to 10-20% within the next one to five years.
