Lucknow: Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, who was part of India's two World Cup-winning campaigns, on Friday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after a career spanning more than two decades.
The Aligarh-born UP player was a member of India's T20 and ODI World Cup-winning squads in 2007 and 2011 under the captainship of MS Dhoni. He represented India in three Tests, 25 ODIs, and seven T20Is, taking 43 wickets across the three formats of the game.
The 36-year-old Chawla is also the joint third-highest wicket-taker in
Indian Premier League
(IPL) history, having taken 192 wickets in as many matches in T-20 IPL tenure 2008-2024 while playing for four IPL teams, having won one title with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2014.
Most recently, he played for Mumbai Indians in IPL-2024. This season, he remained unsold at the IPL auction.
In domestic cricket, he has bagged 446 wickets and scored 5,486 runs in red ball cricket for UP and Gujarat. He played his last first class match for Uttar Pradesh against Kerala in Nov 2024.
Announcing his retirement through an Instagram post, Chawla said, "After more than two decades on the field, the time has come to bid adieu to the beautiful game.
I owe my deepest gratitude to my coaches KK Gautam and Pankaj Saraswat for nurturing and shaping me into the cricketer I became."
"I also thank the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) and Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) for providing me the platform and opportunities to pursue my passion," he added.
Talking to TOI, an emotional Chawla said, "I felt it's the right time, so I officially announced my retirement from all forms of international and domestic cricket. I haven't decided about my future yet."
Piyush is a well-known cricket commentator. After his retirement, he has plenty of options to serve cricket in many ways. With his experience, he can coach an IPL team or guide UPCA teams in different age groups and formats.

ENG vs WI: England's Liam Dawson relishing return from international wilderness
Liam Dawson is determined to make the most of his surprise recall to international duty after believing his England career had come to an end. The 35-year-old left-arm spinner had won just 20 caps across all three formats since making his debut in 2016. He appeared surplus to requirements as England selected a succession of other slow bowlers in red and white-ball cricket, many of whom had inferior county records to Hampshire mainstay Dawson. But he produced a reminder of his quality with four for 20 and a player-of-the-match award as England marked Harry Brook's first T20I as captain with a 21-run win over West Indies at Chester-le-Street on Friday. 'I had got to an age where I probably thought international cricket was gone,' said Dawson after taking his best figures in T20 internationals. 'In my domestic career, I've tried to go out there and just enjoy playing for whoever I'm playing for. It was about going out there and not worrying about playing for England. I think that can hamper you sometimes so I've not really worried about that. I'm at an age now where I know that I'm close to finishing.' Brook gave Dawson the new ball in Durham, a sign of his confidence in the bowler, and perhaps a marker for next year's T20 World Cup on turning pitches in India and Sri Lanka. 'Personally, I think he's been knocking on the door for years to try and solidify that spot and the performance we saw from him was awesome,' said Brook of Dawson. 'Him and Adil Rashid working in tandem at both ends is going be good to watch in the coming years. He can also help the younger lads along the way, to have him in the inner circle when they are bowling is going to help us a lot.' The three-match series continues in Bristol on Sunday before finishing at Dawson's home ground in Southampton on Tuesday. Well though he bowled in Durham, Dawson is taking nothing for granted. 'I know how cricket works, you've got to be consistent and it's only one game,' he said. 'So, I'll park this and go again. It would be nice to play at my home ground, if selected.'

KSCA officials quit hours after HC shield from arrest
Karnataka State Cricket Association's (KSCA) secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam have resigned from their posts, owing moral responsibility for the tragic stampede at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday, hours after the Karnataka High Court granted them protection from police arrests. In a letter to KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, they said they wished to own moral responsibility though their role was very limited. The stampede and congestion near the stadium led to the death of 11 cricket fans and injuries to scores of others. The resignations followed the state government launching a crackdown on the agencies involved in organising the felicitation events at the Chinnaswamy stadium after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title for the first time. On Thursday, chief minister Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of senior executives of RCB, KSCA and event manager DNA Entertainment Network. Shankar and Jairam, along with Bhat, moved the High Court on Friday after the police charged the three organisations with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In their petition, the KSCA office bearers said the association was only a governing body of cricket in Karnataka with affiliation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It has nothing to do with IPL events and Wednesday's celebrations were organized by RCB franchise and managed by its vendor DNA Entertainment Network, they argued. KSCA's role was limited to making the stadium and its infrastructure available to RCB and DNA. The police, the petitioners alleged, registered the FIR against them under intense pressure and compelling circumstances without any preliminary enquiry.
