Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta shows true colours with what he's doing for youth players
Mikel Arteta has been unveiled as Under Armour's new global ambassador, which will see the Arsenal boss look to transform aspiring footballers' lives. The collaboration between the American sportswear giant and one of the Premier League 's most respected tacticians has come as part of Under Armour's expansion into football.
The Gunners boss will share his insights and understanding of the sport in areas such as brand development, talent identification and leadership. A key aspect of Arteta 's new role will also be developing the next generation of athletes with his role in Under Armour's Next programme.
Under Armour launched its Next programme in 2023 with the goal of inspiring, supporting and celebrating the next generation of athletes trying to break through. The project gives players between the ages of 16 and 20, such as those released from professional football clubs, the opportunity to sign up to the programme and test themselves at UA Next Academy in London.
Those who are successful are rewarded with a spot on the UA Next roster, gaining access to pro-level support, experts, facilities and experiences designed to take their game to the next level. So far, over 10,000 athletes have been tested and 18 contracts handed out, with Arteta being brought in to play a leading role in the programme's development.
Under Armour believes Arteta is a perfect fit for the position thanks to his excellent track record of providing young players with a platform to flourish during his Arsenal tenure. But the Spaniard himself is also keen to use his exceptional eye for talent and player development skills to make a meaningful impact in the city he now calls home.
'When we are sitting in our roles, we have a massive opportunity to transform people's lives and I really want to use that opportunity,' he said.
'I had people that made decisions, took chances and changed my life, changed the course of my life, my family and the way I live my life, and I want to do that as often as possible and as much as possible, and it can be in various ways and around football.
'With Under Armour, I think we have a massive opportunity to give so many people hope, opportunities and transform their lives, and make sure that everybody that is here, in London, and across Europe, can see that opportunity is possible and we're going to create that pathway for them.
'The least I can do is try to give back. I've been given so much and I've been given opportunity after opportunity and I try to surround myself with the best possible environment.
"There's no better environment than this [Under Armour] and people who are so passionate about it and are very willing to transform peoples lives, transform products and be very creative about how to approach something with the level of passion and ambition that [founder and CEO] Kevin [Plank] is showing. It's not just to do something, but it's about being the best at something.'
He added: 'When you have to have the sense that a player is prepared to handle a certain situation and has the personality to overcome certain exposure at this level. It's the most fulfilling thing. I've never felt so good as when I give an opportunity to someone and then they give it back – it's just phenomenal.'
The announcement of Arteta's new role will be followed by a new football campaign from Under Armour, 'Be The Problem', which launches this Friday ahead of the start of the new football season. Under Armour believes Arteta embodies the campaign due to his 'elite tactical mind constantly seeking ways to disrupt teams'.
'Bringing Mikel on-board will revolutionise our football business and demonstrates how serious we are about leading the next generation of football,' said Plank.
'I have a great rapport with Mikel and admire how he constantly pushes himself and those around him through his disruptive thinking. For me there really is no one more qualified or suited to the role.'

Liverpool v Bournemouth: Premier League season opener
Update: Date: 2025-08-15T18:30:13.000Z Title: These two clubs are on the verge of doing some business with each other … Content: Premier League updates from 8pm BST at Anfield Match previews | Reds sign Leoni | Email Scott here Scott Murray Fri 15 Aug 2025 20.30 CEST First published on Fri 15 Aug 2025 19.30 CEST 8.30pm CEST 20:30 … but that's not the only news of Liverpool in the market today. 8.24pm CEST 20:24 Season previews. Time for one last look before the first ball is kicked in anger. 8.06pm CEST 20:06 Slot continues: 'We have lost many players and brought in many … even yesterday we brought in one who is not available yet … we have lost a few very good players … the ones we brought in are special as well … in general [in pre-season] we don't concede more chances, but the ones we do concede have led to goals.' Updated at 8.26pm CEST 8.00pm CEST 20:00 Arne Slot speaks to Sky Sports, and first addresses the impact on his squad of this tragic summer. 'The players are far better than I expected five or six weeks ago … in that moment in time, you feel will it ever be possible to play again? … but they have conducted themselves so, so, so well … on both sides they were great, as a human being, but they also understood they have to be professional football players again … so we had to work hard, and that's what we started doing.' Updated at 8.25pm CEST 7.54pm CEST 19:54 Liverpool name four Premier League debutants this evening. Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez all start, as they did at Wembley against Crystal Palace last weekend in the Community Shield. Bournemouth aren't far behind them in that regard. They've got three new players in their line-up tonight: goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović, left-back Adrien Truffert and central defender Bafodé Diakité all make their competitive debuts for the Cherries. 7.49pm CEST 19:49 Liverpool: Alisson, Frimpong, Konate, van Dijk, Kerkez, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo, Mamardashvili, Gomez, Endo, Chiesa, Jones, Elliott, Robertson, Nyoni, Ngumoha. Bournemouth: Petrovic, Smith, Diakite, Senesi, Truffert, Adams, Scott, Brooks, Tavernier, Semenyo, Dennis, Araujo, Soler, Junior Kroupi, Hill, Traore, Billing, Winterburn, Rees-Dottin. Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire). Updated at 8.07pm CEST 7.45pm CEST 19:45 Diogo Jota is pictured on the cover of this evening's match programme. Arne Slot pays tribute to Liverpool's No20 and his brother André Silva in his notes, which confirm that Jota's wife Rute Cardoso, his children and family will be at Anfield this evening. There will be a moment of silence before kick-off, the players will wear black armbands, and Liverpool will wear a Forever 20 emblem on their shirts and jackets. We know that this will be a very emotional occasion, given it is the first league game we have played since we lost Diogo and André. As I have said previously, the tributes that have been paid throughout the football world, and especially within the LFC community, have been truly special, and I know that tonight we will come together to honour them once more. I believe that Diogo's wife, his children and his family will be in attendance and it is important that, as a club, we show that they will always have our love and support as they deal with this most tragic of situations. We are there for them always.' Updated at 7.45pm CEST 7.30pm CEST 19:30 Almost exactly one year ago – 363 days, to be precise – Liverpool found themselves struggling during their season opener at Portman Road. Newly promoted Ipswich Town had been the better team in the first half, and with nearly an hour on the clock, the score remained goalless. But then Trent Alexander-Arnold curled in from the right, finding his team-mate who ... ... flashed a header wide from six yards, when it was surely easier to score. Ah well. No matter, though! That team-mate, an indefatigable bundle of joyous energy, selfless commitment, Fowleresque skill, and straight-up fun, wasn't to be disheartened. He simply came at Ipswich again, 60 seconds later, entering the box to meet a Mohamed Salah pass by calmly and adroitly whipping a firm sidefoot into the corner. The first goal of the Arne Slot era, a crucial momentum-shifter, and the first step towards Premier League glory. Diogo Jota took Liverpool to victory. Better than Figo, don't you know? A year is a long time by any reasonable measure, but with another season opener upon us, all of that feels particularly distant now. Anfield, staging its first competitive fixture since the tragic passing of Diogo and his brother André Silva, will remember, grieve and celebrate those beautiful, beloved boys tonight with a special Kop mosaic in their honour. Then a game of football will take place. Kick-off will be at 8pm UK time, and Jota is forever Liverpool's number 20.

‘I'm unhappy.. it's coming from our building' – David Moyes slams Everton MOLE after information leaked ahead of opener
DAVID MOYES hit out at an Everton mole for leaking news of Jarrad Branthwaite's injury before the season opener against Leeds. Moyes' Toffees kick off their new campaign at Elland Road on Monday. 1 And they face a tough task against Daniel Farke's newly promoted side after struggling for signings. But Everton's mission will be even harder after star defender Branthwaite was ruled out of the Leeds trip with a hamstring injury. The news came out ahead of Moyes' press conference on Friday. And he made no secret of his disdain for Everton's mole while confirming Branthwaite's absence. Slamming the leak while addressing the severity of the injury, Moyes said: 'I wouldn't give that information away anyway. 'But I'm sure that the insider at the club will give it out. 'We have got to find out who it is, who is giving the news out. 'I am unhappy with it; all managers don't like it. 'It is certainly coming from within our building, and it is up to us to put a stop to it, and we will do.' Meanwhile, new signing Jack Grealish could be thrust into the starting XI against Leeds. Premier League Star Doucoure Set for Saudi Switch! The winger joined on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City. And Moyes hinted Grealish could play from the off. He added: 'Grealish looks the same, big calves. 'You need to turn up and find out whether he starts. That's what everyone needs to do. 'I think Jack can play in several positions, I think he can play midfield as well. 'He doesn't give the ball away very often, but my aim is to get Jack in positions where he will get goals and assists for us. 'It's a big challenge for Jack as well. I'm looking forward to see how he responds to it.'
