Over 750 Apple and Pear trees felled in Kotkhai as eviction drive gains momentum
Shimla, July 12 (UNI) In a major operation carried out under tight security, the Special Operation Procedure (SOP) team today cut down over 750 apple and pear trees in the Kotkhai region of Shimla district as part of the ongoing court-monitored drive to clear illegal encroachments from forest land.
The operation began with the felling of 93 apple trees illegally planted by Dinesh Tajta, followed by the removal of 664 apple and pear trees belonging to Pratap Chauhan, officials confirmed.
The Revenue Department has reported that Pratap Chauhan has allegedly encroached upon nearly 20 bighas of forest land in the area. The remaining trees on this encroached stretch are scheduled to be removed on Sunday.
The action is part of the enforcement of a July 2, 2025 Himachal Pradesh High Court order in which a division bench comprising Justices Vivek Singh Thakur and Bipin C. Negi directed the State Forest Department to remove all apple orchards from previously encroached forest land across the state.
The court had taken strong note of repeated attempts by evicted encroachers to reoccupy forest land and had ordered strict recovery of costs from violators, including stump removal and forest replantation, to be charged as arrears of land revenue.
Law and order in the Kotkhai area was maintained peacefully throughout the day, with the District Administration and police teams deployed to ensure smooth conduct of the operation. No resistance or disruption was reported during the felling process.
Earlier, the District Magistrate had imposed a ban on carrying firearms in Village Chaithla under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, amid apprehensions of unrest due to previous instances where locals attempted to obstruct eviction drives.
The ban remains in effect till July 18, and all licensed firearms in the area were ordered to be deposited with the local police.
With the Forest Department and enforcement agencies acting in close coordination, the High Court's directive appears to be gaining full force on the ground, especially in sensitive regions like Kotkhai that have witnessed persistent encroachment over the years.

Administration refutes news spread by YouTube channel regarding SIR
Begusarai, July 13 (UNI) Taking cognizance of misleading information being circulated by a private YouTube handle about the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) work in Sahebpur Kamal Assembly Constituency under Ballia Subdivision of Begusarai district, the district administration has clarified that the execution of SIR activities was being carried out in a peaceful and harmonious environment. In a press release issued today by the Begusarai Collectorate, the local administration refuted the claims made by the private YouTube channel. The administration has also shared this press release on its official social media accounts. The release stated that the entire responsibility of any incident that occurs in the Ballia Subdivision area as a result of the video promoted by the YouTuber and his cameraman associates will be of the YouTuber and his team. Terming the YouTuber's actions as obstruction of government work, the release stated that attempts have been made to disrupt important work like the SIR process, which was being carried out under the guidance of the Election Commission. Such actions were not only irresponsible and inappropriate but also have the potential to incite communal disharmony, added the handout. According to the release, a video was uploaded around 4 pm yesterday on a YouTube channel. Upon reviewing the video, it was found that YouTuber and his team had filmed and published unauthorized footage of the voter list revision process being carried out at the Ballia block auditorium. The video, which is 45 minutes and 39 seconds long, clearly shows the journalist attempting to identify individuals from a particular community and making public sensitive and private electoral documents. The video even alleged that people of a particular caste were being targeted. The release further mentions that the YouTuber was seen forcibly accessing sensitive documents of a specific polling station and falsely portraying incomplete documents and allegedly forged signatures in a misleading manner. Regarding the polling station mentioned in the video, the administration clarified that it has a total of 1,104 registered voters. Of these, forms from 980 voters have already been collected, and 715 have been successfully uploaded. Furthermore, in the Sahebpur Kamal Assembly Constituency (No. 145), which has a total of 2,76,904 voters, forms from 2,18,000 eligible voters have been collected, and out of these, 2,01,897 forms (72 per cent) have already been uploaded. The press release concludes by affirming that the special intensive revision, as directed by the Election Commission, was being conducted with full seriousness and in strict accordance with the prescribed guidelines.
