Expert shares the key phrase to use for quick rebooking when your flight is cancelled

Daily Mirror3 days ago
Saying this one phrase to airlines when your flight is cancelled can dramatically increase your chances of getting the help you need
Having a flight cancelled is an incredibly stressful experience. If you're at the airport, bags packed and ready, everything booked and suddenly stranded, emotions can run high. However, it's important to stay calm.

Anna Bielikova, Chief Operations Officer at Simply Contact, has shared her top tips for working your way through the chaos and getting the best customer service without losing your patience. She said there is one phrase you can say which will almost always ensure your case is addressed promptly, reports the Express.

Anna said: "Say 'I need rebooking options, not a refund' right away.
"This tells the system you're looking for a quick resolution, not a lengthy refund process. Also try 'I have onward connections', even if you don't. This gets you flagged as a complex case needing senior agent attention."
She also recommends ditching the phone call for social media.
These platforms often have shorter queues than phone lines because fewer people think to use them.
Anna said: "We see response times on airline apps that are 60% faster than phone support during peak periods. Social media teams also have more flexibility to solve problems quickly, and they hate public complaints."

Try Twitter DMs or Facebook Messenger first. These teams want to resolve issues fast before they become reputation disasters. If the airport is packed and the service desk for the airline you're using has a huge queue, you can also try one of the other partner airlines.
A lot of airlines share booking systems and can help with rebookings.
"If you're flying British Airways and their desk is packed, try checking with American Airlines or Qantas," suggests Anna. "They're all in the same alliance and can often help faster than waiting in your original queue."

If you are going to call the airline, try to avoid peak times.
Anna said: "The biggest mistake people make is calling during peak hours, which are between 8am and 6pm when everyone else is calling.

"Try early morning or late evening instead, if it's not urgent. And never rely solely on airport staff during major disruptions. They're dealing with hundreds of people face-to-face while phone and digital teams might be less overwhelmed."
It's also crucial to stay calm and be polite, no matter how frustrated you may be. "Whatever you do, don't shout or get aggressive," said Anna.
"I've seen our systems flag difficult customers, and once you're marked as problematic, every future interaction becomes harder.
"Stay calm, be specific about what you need, and always have your booking reference ready. The agents want to help you, so make their job easier and they'll make yours easier too."

easyJet, British Airways, Wizz Air and other passengers warned over severe delays in Spain

A strike is set to hit five airports in Spain between August 16 and August 31. Passengers flying with easyJet, British Airways, Wizz Air and other airlines could be among those affected by a fresh wave of airport strikes. The disruption is set to hit major Spanish holiday hotspots starting this weekend and continue for the next two weekends. ‌ Those jetting off to Barcelona, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante-Elche, Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife Sur may face disruption due to industrial action called by the UGT union, which represents ground handling staff employed by the Menzies group. The strike is not a continuous walkout but is planned across the last three weekends of August 2025, timed to coincide with the peak summer travel season over the weekends of Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 August; Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August; and Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August. ‌ The industrial action is targeted at Menzies Aviation Ibérica, the firm responsible for ground services for several international airlines across Spain. Other airlines that could be impacted include Emirates, Norwegian and American Airlines. ‌ Passengers travelling with the affected airlines on the strike dates should prepare for potential disruption. The strikes target crucial ground services, including passenger check-in, baggage handling, and aircraft assistance on the tarmac. Travellers may face longer queues and extended waiting times for their luggage, reports Bristol Live. Ivalyo Danailov, CEO of airline compensation specialists SkyRefund, said: "Clearly, travellers booked on flights with easyJet, Emirates, British Airways, or the other impacted carriers should check their flight status directly with the airline before heading to the airport for the most up-to-date information. "As the industrial action is by ground handling staff at Menzies Aviation Ibérica is a strike by by third-party ground handling staff it would generally be considered 'an extraordinary circumstance', meaning airlines may not be required to pay compensation for delays caused by such industrial action. "Nonetheless, passengers remain entitled to essential assistance, including meals, refreshments, communication, and accommodation if necessary during prolonged delays. We strongly advise all travellers to keep themselves informed about potential disruptions during these peak summer weekends."

Love Island star Shaughna Phillips reveals holiday nightmare as she shares travel advice

Love Island star Shaughna Phillip recently returned from Alicante, Spain, but had a horrible experience at the airport on her way back to the UK Shaughna Phillips detailed her travelling nightmare while on the way back from Alicante Airport this week. The Love Island star was on holiday with her family when the incident unfolded, prompting her to take to her Instagram Stories to share travel advice with her many followers. ‌ The TV personality revealed there was an abnormal number of travellers at the airport, with 'snaking queues' reaching the back of the airport. However, she soon discovered a travel hack that got her entire family through the line without having to wait for hours. ‌ "I've had loads of messages asking me about Alicante Airport and what happened because they're going to be using it. So, I thought I would jump on here quickly and tell you all because I did have a solid bit of advice," she said. It comes after a Brit abroad slams all-inclusive hotel food asking 'what on earth is this?' ‌ She had a flight at 11:20am and arrived at the airport at 9am, but still had to 'run to the gates'. The reality star said they were sat by the gate for only five minutes before the flight started boarding. "So we had no time, no shops, no wee breaks," the TV personality revealed. "When we got there it was like I've never see it before. "It was like Selfridge's on Christmas morning with people queueing everywhere and you couldn't even tell where the queue started that you needed to be in. "The queue for the EasyJet desk was about 30-35 minutes queue and it snaked like it was way out the barriers to where it was supposed to be. And that wasn't just EasyJet either." ‌ The star said every single check-in and baggage drop desk was busy "apart from Jet2 because nothing beats a Jet2 holiday". The star went on to reveal there was another long queue that went "all the way back to the end of the airport". She left her father-in-law in the queue to walk around with her baby and noticed there was a VIP fast track that bypassed the whole queue if travellers paid 10 euros to get through. Shaughna said there was a black sign with a QR code at the front of the queue that has the information on the VIP queue. ‌ Shaughna returned from her holiday this week and told fans she was "ready for an exciting few weeks/months". She said: "I feel like my life has somewhat been put on hold for the last few years, and it's finally coming to an end, only good times ahead." The star later returned to her page to share her reality check moment. She wrote: "One minute you're laying by the pool and the next minute you're in Kennington getting a blood test, life comes at you fast."
