'You won a skirmish but in a bigger battle to come, all your dirty footprints in Penang will be wiped clean'
THE photograph of you berating outside a shuttered hardware store in Kepala Batas where an elderly man is cowering in fear inside will go down in infamy. You and your rat-tag group of foot soldiers were bent on bringing out the 59-year-old owner, Pang Chin Tian, to teach him a lesson on patriotism but fortunately, some good law-abiding citizens went to his defence. The human barricade formed outside the store was the only barrier that prevented you and your unruly supporters from illegally entering the business premises. We don't know what would have happened if there was no human shield to protect the life of the elderly man you derisively called apek. You and your gang probably had the intention of dragging him out, publicly mocked him and perhaps even forced him to climb up and unfurl the Jalur Gemilang correctly. Or to make him pulled his ears while squatting up and down to the jeers of the spectators. You ignored his sincere apology over the unintentional mistake he made for flying our national flag upside down. Did you achieve anything? The only victory you scored was to give the media the photo opportunity to pose yourself as the conquering hero of Kepala Batas. You must be feeling really proud to see all your photos splashed all over the papers – online as well as printed – advertising your bravery against one man shuddering in fear of his life. Do you call that bravery? No. It is bullying. Harassment. Intimidation. It is false courage fuelled by mob rule. It is the supporters behind your back that lent you the prop to stand tall. Of course, your adoring fans will want more of you and we are likely to witness – whether we like it or not – more of your silly antics. Having won a trophy on the battlefield of Kepala Batas, you will surely be eyeing for more trouble but beware: don't push the other races to the wall. Editor's Note: The long arm of the law has eventually caught up with the rightist Akmal who will on Friday (Aug 22) be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code at the Bukit Mertajam magistrate's court over making statements deemed to threaten public order on his Facebook page. If you start lighting bonfires all over the country, you will face a backlash because Malaysia is our home and there is nowhere else for others to go except to fight back. But make no mistake about your mistake: by your irrational action, you have antagonised the major ethnic community in Penang who will remember the despicable incident come the 16th General Election (GE16). Your 'attack' was a mere 'border skirmish' but in the mother of all battles to come for the hearts and minds of the voters, you and your party will face a decisive battle. You can be certain that all your dirty footprints you left in Penang will be wiped clean on polling day – sending you and your tainted party packing off to oblivion. – Aug 20, 2025 Phlip Rodrigues is a retired journalist. Parliamentary Committee To Table Statement On Bullying In School Next Thursday
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The Parliamentary Select Committee on Women, Children and Community Development will table a statement on the issue of bullying in schools next Thursday, following a briefing session with ministries and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) today. Its chairperson, Yeo Bee Yin said the statement would summarise the recommendations and views obtained from the hearing involving the Ministry of Education (KPM), the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN), as well as various NGOs and activists. "From today's briefing, among the most important recommendations that all NGOs and activists want is the establishment of a child-friendly bullying complaints portal at national level. "Currently, existing complaint systems such as Talian Kasih or online platforms are not child-friendly enough, especially in terms of direct communication or the 'chat' function. So, we will push for a complaint system that is more suitable for children," she said. She was met by the media after a special briefing programme on Tackling Bullying in Schools with Members of Parliament at Parliament today. Meanwhile, Yeo said the committee welcomed the government's efforts to examine the need to enact an Anti-Bullying Act which emphasises the establishment of a tribunal to hear bullying cases involving students and children. However, she stressed that it needs to be seen comprehensively and not just from a disciplinary perspective. "We know that victims of bullying have the potential to become bullies in the future if they are not given the appropriate emotional support. So, the act needs to balance the disciplinary (enforcement) aspect and also provide emotional support,' she said. Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) chief children commissioner Dr Farah Nini Dusuki said the appointment of dormitory wardens should not be from among teachers to ensure the effectiveness of student management and the continuity of teaching sessions.

Gov't Has No Plans To Change Bank Rakyat Status To Commercial Bank
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The government has no plans to change the status of Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Bhd (Bank Rakyat) from a cooperative bank to a commercial bank, says Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. He said that for now, Bank Rakyat remained a cooperative bank and any decision to change its status would depend on its members as well as other procedures. 'It involves several levels of approval if it were to transition to a commercial bank, first through a general meeting of members, secondly, Bank Rakyat is also subject to the Central Bank of Malaysia Act under Bank Negara (BNM). 'In addition, part of the process would need to go through the Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission (SKM). What I can confirm is that Bank Rakyat remains a cooperative bank... there are no plans yet in that direction (to convert into a commercial bank),' he said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for his ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today. He explained the matter after Dr Radzi Jidin (PN-Putrajaya) interjected to seek clarification regarding media reports on the intention of making Bank Rakyat a commercial bank. Meanwhile, Ewon said the Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry (KUSKOP) would establish a regulatory body and appropriate legal framework for the accreditation of social enterprises (SE) under Phase 2 of the Malaysia Social Entrepreneurship Action Plan 2029 (SEMy2030) for the 2026 to 2030 period. He said the SE rating process had been introduced since 2019 and was still being implemented. 'As of August 2025, there are 520 business entities, including MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) and cooperatives that have been accredited as SE under three levels, namely Accredited Social Enterprise ( Basic Social Enterprise (SE.B) and Tunas Social Enterprise (Tunas SE),' he said. On veterans' cooperatives, Ewon said that in 2024, a total of 82 veterans' cooperatives were registered with SKM, involving 9,059 members, with accumulated share capital amounting to RM2.5 million, total assets of RM10.3 million and earnings valued at RM696,470.
