ToU vs General Tariff: What customers need to know

The Star15-07-2025
TENAGA Nasional Bhd (TNB) customers can now enjoy potential savings through the Time-of-Use (ToU) scheme.
By offering different rates for Energy Charges during the peak and off-peak hours, the ToU scheme provides an opportunity for customers to shift more of their electricity consumption to off-peak hours when the rates are lower.
This scheme offers an alternative to the General Tariff, providing customers with greater control over their electricity costs. Whether you're managing a household or running a business, comparing the ToU rates against the standard tariff may reveal opportunities to optimise your energy use and reduce monthly bills.
For domestic customers, the Energy Charge under the General Tariff is 27.03 sen/kWh for usage at or below 1,500 kWh, and 37.03 sen/kWh for usage above that threshold.
Under the ToU scheme, the peak hour rates are slightly higher — 28.52 sen/kWh and 38.52 sen/kWh respectively — but the off-peak rates are significantly lower at 24.43 sen/kWh and 34.43 sen/kWh, respectively.

The ToU scheme offers customers the flexibility to manage electricity consumption more strategically and benefit from the lower rates during off-peak hours. Before applying for ToU, TNB has provided a Bill Calculator to assist customers in estimating their electricity bill under the General Tariff and ToU Tariff.
The Bill Calculator can be found at www.mytnb.com.my/tariff ), as well as the ToU application steps.

TNB Receives Additional Assessment Of RM840 Million For YA 2022

Tenaga Nasional Berhad announced that it has received a Notice of Additional Assessment for the Year of Assessment 2022 from the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia amounting to RM840.13 million. The national utility giant stated that it is currently evaluating its legal options to address this new assessment. This decision comes in the wake of a recent Federal Court ruling pertaining to a similar additional tax assessment issued to TNB for YA 2018. TNB emphasised that its evaluation of the latest RM840.13 million assessment takes into consideration that it has already submitted an application for Investment Allowance under Schedule 7B of the Income Tax Act 1967 (including for YA 2022) to the Minister of Finance. The company has previously indicated that while such tax decisions could have a potential negative financial impact on its earnings and net assets for the financial year ending December 31, 2025, they are not expected to have any operational impact on the company or the group. TNB receives additional RM840.13mil tax bill for YA2022

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has received a notice of additional assessment from the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) for the year of assessment (YA) 2022 amounting to RM840.13mil, it said in stock exchange filing today. The energy utility said it received the notice on July 24, 2025, and - given the Federal Court's decision pertaining to a similar notice of additional assessment it received for YA 2018 - it is currently evaluating its available legal options. "This evaluation takes into consideration that TNB has already submitted an application for Investment Allowance under Schedule 7B of the Income Tax Act 1967 (including those for YA 2022) to the Minister of Finance," it said. Earlier this month, the Federal Court ruled in favour of the IRB concerning an additional tax assessment for the financial year ended December 2018. The court overturned earlier High Court and Court of Appeal decisions that had favoured TNB, reinstating a tax bill initially set at RM1.81bil, which was reduced to RM1.25bil after a penalty remission in December 2020. On July 22, 2025, the High Court granted leave to TNB, through its subsidiary TNB Western Energy Bhd, to commence judicial review against the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) in relation to a tax assessment totalling RM291.6mil for the financial year ended December 2018. TNB said in a stock exchange filing it was also granted an interim stay of all further proceedings, including the enforcement of the assessment notice, until the disposal of the substantive hearing. The High Court scheduled a case management on Aug 5 for further directions.
