Maycee Barber struggles to explain medical issue that forced UFC on ESPN 68 withdrawal
Maycee Barber has opened up on the medical issue that caused her to withdraw from UFC on ESPN 68, but she doesn't have many answers.
Just 30 minutes before she was scheduled to make the walk against Erin Blanchfield in this past Saturday's flyweight main event at the UFC Apex, Barber (14-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) was transported to the hospital after she wasn't medically cleared to compete, and the fight was canceled. She checked out of the hospital Monday, but a couple of days later, Barber is still trying to figure out exactly what happened.
"We're not entirely sure what happened," Barber told ESPN. "Obviously there was a medical emergency. We're not quite sure exactly what it was, what it is, but there was something that happened, and I don't exactly remember everything. But there was an event that happened in the back when I was warming up, and the doctor, the commissioners, like everybody saw it. The commissioners were asking me if I was OK, and I was saying that I was, and they didn't think that I was.
"They kept asking the coaches, and the coaches were like – again, I'm not entirely sure because it's hard for me to remember everything that happened, but from what I was told, the coaches were like, 'We're not quite sure.' They were trying to figure it out, and they ended up getting the doctors. Next thing I know, I was in the back of an ambulance and being transported to a hospital. I stayed there and was doing a bunch of tests and trying to figure out what was going on."
This isn't the first time Barber has been hospitalized for medical reasons caused by a fight. She spent nine days in the hospital after defeating Katlyn Cerminara at UFC 299, and ongoing health issues forced her to withdraw from her UFC on ESPN 59 bout against Rose Namajunas last July.
Barber said the UFC is seeking the best doctors and specialists to get to the bottom of what exactly happened to her.
"It looked like my autonomic nervous system might have been having an issue," Barber said. "They said it looked like a pseudo-seizure, is what I was told, but there's no answer. We need to run tests."
Blanchfield (13-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) was visibly frustrated and went off on Barber, who is more upset with how the fans have reacted.
"I see people commenting, 'Oh, I'm glad it happened to her and not to someone who is relevant,' and I feel that's a pretty heartless and cold thing to say," Barber said. "I wouldn't wish that on anybody. I wouldn't wish this kind of situation, an unknown situation, on anybody. It's frustrating because it makes me have a lot of sympathy toward whoever has a medical issue or something going on in their life."

Marshawn Lloyd dealing with short-term groin injury
One of Green Bay's running backs is currently sidelined, but that shouldn't be the case for too long. Head coach Matt LaFleur told reporters on Thursday that MarShawn Lloyd is dealing with a groin issue. "It's not going to be a long-term deal, but I wouldn't anticipate him this week," LaFleur said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. Lloyd, 24, was a third-round pick in last year's draft. He was able to play just one game last year as a rookie due to injury and subsequent appendicitis.

Dricus Du Plessis: 'Special' Ilia Topuria going to be a Hall of Famer no doubt
Dricus Du Plessis started his UFC journey with fellow champion Ilia Topuria at the same time. Both middleweight champion Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) and lightweight champion Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) debuted on the same UFC Fight Night 179 card in October 2020. It would mark the start of an incredible rise, where both fighters are unbeaten in the octagon and currently holding UFC titles. Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) however, has assembled an undeniable resume consisting of three-straight knockouts of Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and, most recently, Charles Oliveira to claim the vacant 155-pound belt at UFC 317. He is also the first undefeated fighter to claim belts in two different divisions in the UFC. "I'm so happy for him," Du Plessis said of Topuria in an interview with Betway South Africa. "We made our debuts on the same fight card. He was literally in my changing room. We were on the same trajectory, winning our titles one month apart, so I'm super happy for him. "I think he's one of those special characters who's going to be a Hall of Famer, no doubt. He's the first unbeaten guy to have two titles, so I rate him very highly as an all-round fighter. And obviously, his striking power, knocking out three legends – I think he's incredible, and in my opinion, one of the best, if not the best in the UFC right now." Du Plessis will look to notch his third middleweight title defense when he takes on Khamzat Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 main event on Aug. 16 from United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).

Conor McGregor loses appeal against civil jury's finding he sexually assaulted a woman
The Associated Press generally does not name alleged victims of sexual violence unless they come forward publicly, as Hand has done. McGregor alleged that Hand fabricated the allegations after the two had consensual sex. He launched an appeal, but at a hearing earlier this month his lawyer unexpectedly withdrew a request to introduce new evidence. Advertisement Three appeals court judges in Dublin on Thursday dismissed the appeal 'in its entirety.' Hand was in court for the ruling, but McGregor was not. The 37-year-old fighter, once the face of the Ultimate Fighting Championship but now past his prime in the ring, has become known for anti-immigration statements and criticism of Irish politicians. He has flirted with the idea of running for president of Ireland. US President Trump, a UFC fan, invited McGregor to the White House to mark St. Patrick's Day in March. McGregor also faces a lawsuit in Florida for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in the bathroom of the Kaseya Center, home arena of the Miami Heat, during a 2023 NBA finals game with the Denver Nuggets.
