Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson gets 4-year, $52M extension
The deal includes $30 million guaranteed for Ferguson, who was due to earn $3.4 million in the final year of his rookie contract in 2025.
Ferguson, 26, caught 59 passes for 494 yards with no touchdowns in 14 games (all starts) for the Cowboys last season.
"Excited for Jake and everything he's done," Cowboys new head coach Brian Schottenheimer said. "Last year, obviously he didn't feel like he had the best year, but it shows you that we're always evaluating everything.
"Things he's done from a play temperament. the enforcer that he is. He loves football and he got that throw-back mentality."
The 2022 fourth-round draft pick made the Pro Bowl in 2023 and has 149 receptions for 1,429 yards and seven TDs in 47 career games (38 starts).
According to the Cowboys, Ferguson becomes the seventh-highest paid tight end in the NFL and the extension also frees up $1.8 million toward the team's 2025 salary cap.
Although Dallas has locked up a key piece of its offense, All-Pro pass-rusher Micah Parsons still is waiting for his payday as the team prepares for its Sept. 4 season opener at defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia.
The announcement about Ferguson's deal on the team's website said Cowboys co-owner and COO Stephen Jones considers the training camp site in Oxnard, Calif., a "friendly ground for getting contracts done, so Dallas may not be done just yet."

Kyle Shanahan's confidence in 49ers rising star could set table for new Super Bowl window
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan tied his future with the 49ers to quarterback Brock Purdy when the club signed Purdy to a massive five-year extension this offseason and erased all doubt about his status as their franchise QB. Shanahan on Tuesday in a press conference talked about his expectations for Purdy in 2025 and made it clear he doesn't believe the 25-year-old has played his best football yet. Purdy's continued ascension will ultimately determine whether the 49ers have a new Super Bowl window, or if there will be an overhaul of the coaching staff and front office in the not-so-distant future. 'I think Brock's played at a very high level since he's been here, since his first game in to his last game," Shanahan said. "I think Brock's played at an extremely high level and that's why he's earned that contract. I think the hardest thing with this League and the amount of money and the amount of coverage when people get contracts, there's all this other expectation of now what do they have to do? Jake Ferguson's $52 million contract exposes Cowboys' draft mistake
Jake Ferguson's new contract should be a happy day for the Cowboys front office. A fourth round pick turned into Dak Prescott's security blanket for the future. But beneath the high-fives and congratulations is an underhanded admittance that Dallas whiffed on a draft pick not too long ago. A year after Ferguson was drafted, the Cowboys selected tight end Luke Schoonmaker in the second round of the 2023 draft. At the time, Ferguson only had 19 receptions for 174 yards his rookie year. Dalton Schultz was the starter that season but the Cowboys moved on from him. Schoonmaker, out of the University of Michigan, was expected to be an excellent blocking and pass-catching tight end. Instead it was Ferguson who stood out as a secure target over the middle while Schoonmaker struggled. The former Wolverine only had 27 receptions for 241 yards and one touchdown last season. He hasn't proven worthy of a second round investment. The Ferguson contract shows the Cowboys front office is admitting defeat on Schoonmaker. He has two years left on his rookie deal and still has a chance to prove himself, but Ferguson has taken the mantle as the primary tight end. It will take an injury or catastrophic shift if Dallas was to ever view Schoonmaker as a good pick. It's a rare miss for a front office that has drafted some elite talent.
