Dubai businessman Vasu Shroff harassed over Rolex at Jaipur Airport sparks NRI outrage

Gulf News23-04-2025
Dubai: Prominent Dubai-based Indian businessman and Chairman of the Regal Group, Vasu Shroff, 84, was harassed by customs officials at Jaipur International Airport upon his arrival on April 11th or 12th, according to multiple Indian media reports. The incident, involving a personal Rolex wristwatch, has triggered widespread concern and anger among the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) community.
According to reports Shroff, a recipient of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award, voluntarily declared his personal Rolex watch, presenting the original receipt and certificate to customs officials. He had intended to wear the watch during his visit for a family event and a temple inauguration and then return with it to Dubai. According to his lawyer, the Rolex watch in question was a high-end luxury timepiece valued at around Rs 3.5 million (approximately Dh150,000).
Detained for four hours
However, Shroff claims that customs officials accused him of attempting to smuggle the timepiece. He was allegedly detained in his wheelchair for over four hours and denied access to water, necessary medication, and basic restroom facilities. In statements carried by several news outlets, Shroff described the treatment as akin to that of a "criminal." He expressed deep distress and stated that the ordeal caused him to miss the intended family function.
The alleged high-handedness of the customs officials has been particularly criticized in the media in light of his stature and his compliance with declaration procedures.
Watch finally retrieved
Following the incident, Shroff was reportedly compelled to leave the watch with the customs department to seek urgent medical attention. His legal team in India intervened. NDTV reports that the watch was finally retrieved from customs on April 19th and subsequently returned to Shroff in Dubai.
Vasu Shroff said he will pursue legal action to ensure that other NRIs do not face similar humiliating experiences at Indian airports, according to reports. This incident has reignited discussions about the treatment of the NRIs, who often travel to India with personal belongings acquired abroad.

From swallowing rocks to ramming jewellery stores, a 20-year timeline of daring Dubai heists

Dubai, long known as one of the world's leading hubs for luxury jewellery, has also witnessed daring diamond thefts over the past two decades. From smash-and-grab raids to elaborate deception schemes, these high-profile cases remain etched in the city's crime history. While such cases have captured global headlines, Dubai Police stress that jewellery store robberies are exceptionally rare in the emirate, thanks to strict security measures and using advanced technology in tracking the crooks. Dubai Police recently prevented an attempt to smuggle a stolen diamond worth $25 million out of the UAE after arresting a trio that had been plotting to steal the 21-carat pink diamond for more than a year. They conned the jeweller by posing as wealthy buyers interested in purchasing it. The pink diamond is classified as fancy intense and weighs 21.25 carats, has an exceptional clarity, symmetry and polish. Teams from Dubai police were able to track the three suspects, arrest them and recover the diamond in eight hours from receiving the emergency report. Here is a list of famous diamond heists in the emirate. Diamond necklace (2022) On July 3, 2022, two men, from Eastern Europe, were arrested over the theft of a diamond necklace worth Dh1.7 million in a night-time raid at a luxury hotel in the Al Sufouh area. The pair wore wigs, face masks and used a glass cutter during the theft at the hotel's jewellery shop. They were stopped by officials as they tried to board a flight out of Dubai airport only hours later. Blue diamond smuggling case in 2018 On May 25, 2018, Dubai Police cracked a major case involving a rare 9.33-carat blue diamond worth $20 million (Dh73.4million). A security guard working for a company in a free zone stole the gem and passed it to a relative, who smuggled it to Sri Lanka hidden in a shoe box by sea. Following an intensive cross-border investigation, the diamond was traced and recovered, and the suspects were arrested. Dubai Police investigators analysed 8,620 hours of CCTV footage and questioned 120 people, eventually leading to the suspect's arrest and recovered the blue stone, named Brilliant. Gold Souk distraction theft (2018) On October 22, 2018, a daring distraction theft unfolded at the Gold Souk in Deira area. An Asian woman grabbed a 3.27-carat diamond worth about Dh300,000 and swallowed it in an attempt to smuggle it out. The thieves distracted a shopkeeper before swiftly making off. The woman and her partner fled the country, but were arrested within 24 hours in India and later extradited to the UAE. The stolen stone was recovered. Wafi Mall smash-and-grab (2007) One of Dubai's most infamous robberies took place in April 2007, when members of the notorious Pink Panthers gang stormed the Graff jewellery boutique at Wafi City Mall. Using two stolen Audi cars, the gang rammed through the glass entrance and escaped with diamonds and jewellery worth nearly Dh14.7 million. The thieves torched their getaway vehicles and fled, sparking an international investigation that later led to multiple arrests.

Why are pink diamonds so rare and valuable?

Dubai Police's recent foiling of a heist has once again cast the spotlight on pink diamonds, considered among the rarest and most sought-after gems in the world. The force on Monday said they arrested a gang that had been plotting to steal a 21-carat rare pink diamond worth $25 million from a jeweller and smuggle it out of the UAE. The elaborate year-long scheme involved identifying the diamond's owner and tricking him into moving the precious stone out of his secure shop, allowing them to steal it. Teams from Dubai CID were able to track the three suspects, arrest them and recover the diamond within eight hours of the theft before it left the country. Pink diamonds owe their colour to extreme pressure during formation, which distorts their structure and makes light reflect in shades of pink. They are the rarest of the precious gems and the most in-demand on the global market, fetching record prices at auctions. Five of the 10 most expensive diamonds ever sold have been pink, according to auction house Sotheby's, with all sold within the past decade. Dubai Police did not identify the owner of the recovered pink diamond, but said the stone was among the rarest in the world, with only a 0.01 per cent chance of finding another like it. Vikram Jethwani, co-founder of VikJet Fine Jewelry and 818 Vault, told The National that collectors see pink diamonds 'as both emotional treasures and irreplaceable assets' due to their rarity. 'A $25 million pink diamond could command even higher bids in Dubai, where scarcity and investor appetite drive values upwards. Additionally, auction houses often push such gems beyond estimates,' he says. Buyers of such rare stones are in 'the global 0.01 per cent of ultra high net worth individuals, royals and seasoned collectors,' he explains. 'They view pink diamonds as the ultimate blend of status and beauty.' According Mehul Pethani, of Cara Jewellers in Dubai, pink diamonds can range in price from tens of thousands to millions of dollars per carat, depending on the intensity and quality of the colour. 'The UAE's affluent market and appreciation for high-end jewellery contribute to their popularity,' says the jeweller. 'In fact, some of the world's most renowned jewellers and luxury brands, who call the UAE home, often feature pink diamonds in their collections. 'Only few pink diamonds exist in the world and only few mines produce them, that's why they are so much more expensive than white diamonds.' Jethwani adds: 'Demand has only grown since the closure of Australia's Argyle mine in 2020, which was the world's main source – 90 per cent of pink diamonds globally were sourced from there.' Beyond the UAE, the wider Middle East is 'a trend-leader in pink diamonds,' according to Jeremy Morris, the chief executive and creative director of London-based jeweller David Morris. 'These gemstones are, of course, pretty and extremely collectible, but I believe their popularity among the jewellery connoisseurs of the Middle East owes more to the gemstone's elegance and individuality,' he told The National in an earlier interview. 'For me they are absolutely timeless, while possessing a playfulness that as a jewellery designer is a joy to work with, and offers a unique beauty that captivates our clients.' One of the most expensive pink diamonds to recently go on sale was an 'ultra-rare' gemstone weighing 10.57 carats. Named Eternal Pink, the diamond, which was discovered at a mine in Botswana, was displayed in Dubai by Sotheby's before it fetched $34.8 million at an auction in New York.
