Scientists Taught AI to Predict Nuclear Fusion Success—and It's Actually Working
In research published today in Science, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory report how its newly developed deep learning model accurately predicted the results of a 2022 fusion experiment at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The model, which assigned 74% probability for ignition in that experiment, outperforms traditional supercomputing methods by covering more parameters with greater precision.
'What we're excited about with this model is the ability to explicitly make choices for future experiments that maximize our probability of success each time,' study co-author Kelli Humbird told Gizmodo during a video call. Even a facility as large and well-established as the NIF can only 'do a couple dozen of these ignition attempts per year—so really not very many at all, given how much territory we have to cover,' added Humbird, who leads the Cognitive Simulation Group at NIF's Inertial Confinement Fusion Program.
Currently, nuclear power plants run on nuclear fission, which captures the energy generated by the splitting of heavy atoms, like uranium. Researchers eventually want to shift toward nuclear fusion, a process that combines lightweight hydrogen atoms to release massive amounts of energy. Fusion produces more energy and doesn't create harmful, radioactive byproducts, so having fusion as a reliable source of energy would greatly benefit our society's transition to sustainable energy. Although the field has made some promising advances, the consensus is that we're still far from implementing nuclear fusion on a commercial scale.
NIF's fusion experiments are laser-driven. First, the lasers heat up a gold cylinder called the hohlraum, which then emits a flow of powerful X-rays. The extreme temperatures compress the fuel pellets containing deuterium and tritium, two hydrogen isotopes used in fusion experiments. In an ideal scenario, this triggers enough deuterium-tritium fusion reactions to produce more energy than the lasers consume.
Computer simulations can't reliably predict all the physics in this process, Humbird said. That's in part because the codes are often simplified so they're 'computationally tractable,' but the simulations themselves can also introduce some errors. Even if you've taken all sorts of precautions, it still takes days for the computers to finish running through the code, she added.
Achieving nuclear fusion is like scaling a tall, uncharted mountain, Humbird said. The computer simulations are like an 'imperfect' map that's supposed to teach researchers how to reach the peak—but this map could be rife with errors that may or may not be the product of their research design. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking, and researchers have to quickly decide whether they'll take the hike that day and which tools they're going to use. And of course, each 'hike,' or ignition attempt, burns a huge hole in the budget.
And so, Humbird's team embarked on a mapmaking quest, stitching together 'previously collected NIF data, high-fidelity physics simulations, and subject matter expert knowledge' to build a comprehensive dataset. Then, they uploaded the data to state-of-the-art supercomputers, which ran a statistical analysis lasting over 30 million CPU hours.
'What we basically came up with was a distribution of things that go wrong [at] NIF,' Humbird explained. 'All of the different ways that we have observed implosions. Sometimes the laser doesn't fire exactly how you asked it to. Sometimes your target has defects in it that can cause things to not go super well.'
The model allows researchers to preemptively determine the efficacy of their experimental design, saving them considerable time and money. Humbird used the model to assess their own design from a 2022 experiment, which accurately described the results of the specific run in advance. In particular, Humbird was pleased to see that subsequent tweaks to the model's physics increased the accuracy of its predictions from 50 to 70%.
For Humbird, the strength of the new model is that it accepts and replicates the imperfections of the real world—whether that's a flaw in the instrument, research design, or just some silly trick of nature. At the same time, it's a reminder that, while quick progress is exciting, things often take a lot of time and will even result in outright failure.
'People have been working on fusion for decades… We shouldn't be so bummed about the times things don't work,' Humbird said. 'The fact that we sometimes get 1 megajoule of yield instead of two shouldn't upset us, because not too long ago we were only getting 10 kilojoules. It's a huge step forward for research, and hopefully a huge step forward for clean energy in the future.'

Tech guru Erik Gordon warns investors will 'suffer' far more from the AI craze than the dot-com crash
A company's stock plunge shows how the financial fallout of the AI boom stalling will be much greater than the dot-com bust, tech guru Erik Gordon told Business Insider. Gordon, an entrepreneurship professor who researches financial markets and technology at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, has previously called the AI boom an " order-of-magnitude overvaluation bubble." Other investors have said tech stocks surging on AI bullishness will crash like dot-com companies in the early 2000s, but some, such as Kevin O'Leary, have dismissed the comparison. Gordon contrasted the market values of the online pet-food retailer that became what he called the "poster bozo" of dot-com mania, and CoreWeave, an AI infrastructure startup that went public in March. Nvidia-backed CoreWeave's shares have fallen 30% over the past two days, wiping about $23 billion from its market cap, showing how "more investors will suffer than suffered in the dot-com crash, and their suffering will be more painful" in a bursting AI bubble, Gordon said. The fall came after its latest earnings showed widening losses and infrastructure constraints. backed by Amazon and several renowned VC firms, secured a market value of $410 million at its peak in February 2000. But within the next 12 months, the company declared bankruptcy and said it would liquidate its assets, and its stock was delisted. "If you assume all $410 million was lost, the loss was tiny compared to what we might see in AI," Gordon said. CoreWeave shows how sudden and significant losses can be for shareholders, Gordon said. The loss to its market cap is about 56 times peak market cap. CoreWeave stock still closed at $105 a share on Wednesday, more than double its listing price of $40. CoreWeave didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. CEO Michael Intrator said in a statement accompanying the earnings that they show "continued momentum across every dimension of our business." The collapse of the dot-com bubble saw the S&P, including dividends, drop by around 9% in 2000, 12% in 2001, then 22% in 2002. Scores of startups filed for bankruptcy, and thousands of tech workers lost their jobs. Tech titans make up a large chunk of the US stock market's value, and their profits and market dominance have made them mainstays of retirement portfolios and pension funds. In 2022, Gordon told Business Insider that more people were invested in AI than in dot-com companies 25 years ago. He predicted there would be " more bowls of spaghetti" after the AI boom burst, as people who got burned by the slump would cook at home to save money and cut costs wherever possible. Speaking to Business Insider last week, O'Leary said the AI boom wasn't the "same hype that the internet bubble was, because today, you actually can see the productivity and measure it on a dollar-by-dollar basis."

How cancer could soon be detected using just a voice note
AI could soon be able to tell whether patients have cancer of the voice box using just a voice note, according to new research. Scientists recorded the voices of men with and without abormalities in their vocal folds - which can be an early sign of laryngeal cancer - and found differences in vocal qualities including pitch, volume, and clarity. They now say AI could be used to detect these 'vocal biomarkers', leading to earlier, less invasive diagnosis. Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University believe voice notes could now be used to train an AI tool that recognises vocal fold lesions. Using 12,523 voice recordings from 306 participants across North America, they found distinctive vocal differences in men suffering from laryngeal cancer, men with vocal fold lesions, and men with healthy vocal folds. However, researchers said similar hallmark differences were not detected in women. They are now hoping to collect more recordings of people with and without the distinctive vocal fold lesions to create a bigger dataset for tools to work from. In the UK, there are more than 2,000 new cases of laryngeal cancer each year. Symptoms can include a change in your voice, such as sounding hoarse, a high-pitched wheezing noise when you breathe, and a long-lasting cough. 'Here we show that with this dataset we could use vocal biomarkers to distinguish voices from patients with vocal fold lesions from those without such lesions,' said Dr Phillip Jenkins, the study's corresponding author said. 'To move from this study to an AI tool that recognises vocal fold lesions, we would train models using an even larger dataset of voice recordings, labeled by professionals. We then need to test the system to make sure it works equally well for women and men. 'Voice-based health tools are already being piloted. Building on our findings, I estimate that with larger datasets and clinical validation, similar tools to detect vocal fold lesions might enter pilot testing in the next couple of years," he predicted. It comes after research from US-based Klick Labs, which created an AI model capable of distinguishing whether a person has Type 2 diabetes from six to 10 seconds of voice audio. The study involved analysing 18,000 recordings in order to identify acoustic features that differentiated non diabetics from diabetics and reported an 89 per cent accuracy rating for women and 86 per cent for men. Jaycee Kaufman, a research scientist at Klick Labs, praised the future potential for AI-powered voice tools in healthcare, saying: 'Current methods of detection can require a lot of time, travel and cost. Voice technology has the potential to remove these barriers entirely.'
