How cancer could soon be detected using just a voice note
Scientists recorded the voices of men with and without abormalities in their vocal folds - which can be an early sign of laryngeal cancer - and found differences in vocal qualities including pitch, volume, and clarity. They now say AI could be used to detect these 'vocal biomarkers', leading to earlier, less invasive diagnosis.
Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University believe voice notes could now be used to train an AI tool that recognises vocal fold lesions.
Using 12,523 voice recordings from 306 participants across North America, they found distinctive vocal differences in men suffering from laryngeal cancer, men with vocal fold lesions, and men with healthy vocal folds. However, researchers said similar hallmark differences were not detected in women.
They are now hoping to collect more recordings of people with and without the distinctive vocal fold lesions to create a bigger dataset for tools to work from.
In the UK, there are more than 2,000 new cases of laryngeal cancer each year. Symptoms can include a change in your voice, such as sounding hoarse, a high-pitched wheezing noise when you breathe, and a long-lasting cough.
'Here we show that with this dataset we could use vocal biomarkers to distinguish voices from patients with vocal fold lesions from those without such lesions,' said Dr Phillip Jenkins, the study's corresponding author said.
'To move from this study to an AI tool that recognises vocal fold lesions, we would train models using an even larger dataset of voice recordings, labeled by professionals. We then need to test the system to make sure it works equally well for women and men.
'Voice-based health tools are already being piloted. Building on our findings, I estimate that with larger datasets and clinical validation, similar tools to detect vocal fold lesions might enter pilot testing in the next couple of years," he predicted.
It comes after research from US-based Klick Labs, which created an AI model capable of distinguishing whether a person has Type 2 diabetes from six to 10 seconds of voice audio. The study involved analysing 18,000 recordings in order to identify acoustic features that differentiated non diabetics from diabetics and reported an 89 per cent accuracy rating for women and 86 per cent for men.
Jaycee Kaufman, a research scientist at Klick Labs, praised the future potential for AI-powered voice tools in healthcare, saying: 'Current methods of detection can require a lot of time, travel and cost. Voice technology has the potential to remove these barriers entirely.'

Two Thirds Of Trash Found In Global Rivers Is Plastic, Study Finds
Pieces of plastic, including bottles, bags, straws and cutlery, make up two thirds of the rubbish found in rivers around the world, according to a new analysis. The research by experts at the University of California, Santa Barbara, used on-the-ground data from Mexico, Jamaica, Panama, Ecuador, Kenya, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. Over the three-year period, local teams collectively removed and analyzed 3.8 million kilograms of river debris, the equivalent to 380,000,000 single-use plastic water bottles, with 66% classified as microplastic. The researchers also found substantial variation in the amount of plastic pollution intercepted in rivers studied, but all contained plastic debris of some sort. Based on their findings, researchers now estimate 1.95 million metric tons of travels down rivers worldwide every year. The study has been published as negotiators in Geneva failed to reach an agreement on an international treaty to curb plastic pollution. Lead author, Chase Brewster, a project scientist in University of California, Santa Barbara's Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory, said it was largest continuous dataset, which has ever been produced on the subject of plastic pollution in rivers, in an interview. Brewster added the research helps underline and scope and the scale of the issue around the world. 'This problem is not going away and it is global,' he told me. 'We should not be ignoring in this day and age the fact two thirds of everything coming down our rivers is now plastic.' Brewster said the researchers on the project also engaged with local communities and he hoped the data would help them take targeted action 'The more involved and engaged people are, and the more empowered they feel in their communities, the more likely they are to change behavior and influence legislation in their areas. 'More often than not, these communities are not trying to pollute. It's the larger institutions who are failing them. There's no access to waste management services, or other options.' Brewster said the report makes a number of recommendations, including creating more of a value for plastic waste to discourage people from throwing it away and letting it go to waste. He added one of the big problems is that it is still cheaper to produce virgin plastic than it is to make recycled plastic, so there need to be incentives like bottle deposit fees, and virgin production caps to create better market conditions for a circular economy. The study also calls for greater support for the informal waste-picking sector in certain parts of the world and more investment in waste management and recycling infrastructure and services. It also recommends more consistent and more transparent monitoring and data collection to inform targeted upstream actions. In addition, it calls for well-designed local and national policies as well as ambitious international frameworks to address the different scales of the problem. 'Negotiators and country officials can use this data to assess the river plastic pollution problem in real life, look at differences in pollution in different places, and test ideas about what policies and systems are working,' Brewster added. Anthony Merante, senior plastics campaigner at Oceana Canada, said the oceans have become the dumping grounds for the world's plastic waste, in an email. Merante added people have over-plasticized their lives and invested in single-use, disposable systems hoping that recycling will save us. 'Not a single river studied was free from plastic, emphasizing that this is a planetary problem we all must act to correct,' he said. 'The solution is clear; we need to reduce plastic production and use and invest in solutions that actually work like refill and reuse.'

Jerry Jones reveals 2010 cancer diagnosis in new documentary
Jerry Jones reveals he battled cancer in an upcoming Netflix documentary series about the Dallas Cowboys. In an episode of "America's Team: The Gamble and His Cowboys," the 10-part documentary series scheduled to premier next Tuesday, Jones mentions that he underwent cancer treatment "about a dozen years ago." On Wednesday morning, the Dallas Morning News reported that Jones overcame stage 4 melanoma after a decade-long battle beginning with his diagnosis in 2010. "I was saved by a fabulous treatment and great doctors and a real miracle [drug] called PD-1 [therapy]," Jones told the Dallas Morning News. "I went into trials for that PD-1 and it has been one of the great medicines. "I now have no tumors." PD-1 is a "checkpoint protein" that can prevent immune cells called "T cells" from attacking normal cells. However, some cancer cells have enough of PDL-1, a different protein that bonds with PD-1 and allows it to prevent attacks from the immune system. The goal of checkpoint protein-related therapy is to block PD-1 from bonding with PDL-1, essentially allowing the body's immune system to attack other cells more freely. The aim is to "help the immune system to better find and attack the cancer cells, wherever they are in the body," but it can lead to some brutal side effects as the immune system might attack other, healthy cells in the body. Jones' stage 4 cancer diagnosis means that the cancer cells from his melanoma had spread to other parts of his body, which is what led to his four surgeries surgeries on his lungs and lymph nodes. According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma patients who have had their cancer metastasize to "distant parts of the body, such as the lungs, liver, or skin, or lymph nodes" have a five-year survival rate of 35%.
