Venus Williams makes a winning return to action at the age of 45

The 45-year-old seven-time grand slam tournament winner accepted a wildcard to compete in the Mubadala Citi DC Open this week.
She and fellow American Baptiste proved too strong for Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue as they triumphed 6-3 6-1 in a last-16 encounter that lasted 72 minutes.

Her comeback will continue as she takes on another American in Peyton Stearns in the first round of the singles. It is Williams' first appearances in a WTA Tour event since March 2024.
'It was great to come out here and see the energy,' Williams said on Sky Sports after the match. 'As we were walking out to the court, we knew this was going to be a match.
'Our opponents actually played very well. It wasn't easy for us but we brought it together quickly as a team. It was inspiring to be out here. I love this game and still hitting it big.'
Williams joked she wished she could have partnered with Baptiste, the 23-year-old world number 50, years earlier rather than playing with her sister Serena.
She said: 'I think from the first point, I could see that we were going to be a good team. We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right? I think Serena was just in the way!'
Britain's Emma Raducanu scored an eye-catching win on her doubles debut alongside former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
Competing together for the first time, the duo fought back from an early deficit to beat fourth seeds Tereza Mihalikova and Britain's Olivia Nicholls 2-6 7-6 (4) 11-9 in a decisive tie-break set.
It was a notable win for Raducanu and Rybakina against opponents who triumphed at the Berlin Open last month and also reached the final at Indian Wells earlier this year.
Look at what it means!!! ❤️‍🔥

British number one Katie Boulter fell at the first hurdle in the singles as she went out 3-6 4-6 to Greece's Maria Sakkari.
Boulter lost her opening service game in each set and was never able to regain the initiative.
Earlier, former men's singles champion Dan Evans enjoyed a triumphant return to the tournament as he came from behind to beat Zizou Bergs.
Evans, the veteran former British number one, triumphed in 2023 but opted not to defend his title last year as he focused on the Olympics.
The 35-year-old was awarded a wildcard to participate this time and took advantage as he overcame a slow start to beat the Belgian Bergs, the world number 52, 3-6 6-4 6-3.
Bergs looked to have resisted the fightback when he edged back ahead with a break in the final set but Evans powered back to secure victory by winning four successive games.
'I didn't just want to take the wildcard and lose,' Evans said on Sky Sports. 'I felt I needed to pay them back a bit and try to 'defend' my title, because I couldn't last year.
'It was great, really enjoyed it, but it was rally difficult. There wasn't much rhythm. He played very well and I was lucky to come through that.'

Key talking points as British & Irish Lions target Australia whitewash

Here the PA news agency examines five talking points heading into the Sydney showdown. Lions target clean sweep British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell (David Davies/PA) Andy Farrell's tourists enhanced their reputations by showing they have the character to match their quality after emerging from a desperately tight second Test with a series victory. Now they are determined to take their place in the Lions pantheon by ending their Australia expedition with a 100 per cent record. No Lions team have won every Test since the 1927 visit to Argentina, while the 1974 'Invincibles' who took on South Africa were the last side to complete an unbeaten tour. Final Test but full throttle The series may already have been won, but no mercy is being shown to Australia in selection. Rather than rotating in fresh legs to reward deserving squad members who just missed the cut, the established 23 have been retained with the hard grafting James Ryan and unpredictable Blair Kinghorn the only new starters. The selection for the Sydney Olympic Park clash reflects how much the Lions value the clean sweep and by Saturday night only 27 players will have been used in the Tests. Leading the pride Farrell has been reluctant to say if he wanted to take charge of the next Lions tour to New Zealand in 2029, but after masterminding Australia's demise with a game to spare, the job would be his to turn down. Apart from the success on the field, the Ireland boss has created a harmonious squad environment and is revered by his players and coaching staff. When the tourists talk about a united squad effort, they mean it. 'I just love everything that the Lions is about' said Farrell on Thursday and there is no better champion for the institution described by manager Ieuan Evans as a 'glorious anachronism'. Among the greats British and Irish Lions' Tadhg Furlong (Brian Lawless/PA) Tadhg Furlong reaches a special milestone on Saturday by making his ninth successive start for the Lions, becoming only the seventh player to do so but the first in the professional era. For three consecutive tours the remarkable Ireland tighthead prop has acted as the cornerstone of the scrum, as well proving his quality in every other department of the game. Adding to the achievement is that he has kept his place in the Lions' front row despite his season being ravaged by calf and hamstring injuries. When he returns home, it will be as a Lions great. The Wallabies' last stand Australia shot down critics questioning their place among the Lions' tour destinations by going within 51 seconds of winning a captivating second Test. It was the performance needed from the Wallabies to validate the tour but the question now is how much they have left in the tank after rising to the occasion so manfully in Melbourne. Star forward Rob Valetini has been ruled out by his calf problem, but offsetting that major blow is that Will Skelton is able to continue in the second row despite his recent calf injury. The Wallabies are underdogs, but avoiding a whitewash is all the motivation they need to cause an upset.

Emma Raducanu's ‘humiliation' of Canadian Open opponent she was accused of cheating against

Emma Raducanu will face Amanda Anisimova for the third time this year in the third round of the Canadian Open, with the Briton yet to drop a set thus far in Montreal British No. 1 Emma Raducanu is set to face a familiar opponent in Amanda Anisimova in the third round of the Canadian Open. The Toronto-born star has been making waves in Montreal after not dropping a single set so far in the tournament, most recently defeating Payton Stearns. ‌ Wimbledon runner-up Anisimova has also had a strong showing, although she only entered in the second round. And this could give the American, who returned to tennis after taking a hiatus in relation to her mental health, an important advantage as she seeks her maiden victory over Raducanu. ‌ The two players are known to be friendly off the court and have already faced each other twice in 2025, with Raducanu emerging victorious on both occasions - first at the Australian Open in January and then at the Miami Open in March. It was during the former that Raducanu drew the ire of Anisimova's fans, even being labelled a cheat for her actions. ‌ She was trailing 3-0 in the first set when she called for a medical timeout to receive treatment for a lower back issue. The 2021 US Open champion, who recently reclaimed top spot in the British rankings, went on to win six games without any response from Anisimova. However, her supporters were less silent as many took to social media and accused Raducanu of dishonesty. Numerous supporters even went so far as to suggest she called for the break merely to halt her opponent's momentum. One critic slammed X, exclaiming: "She's a cheater!! Running around winning three games after a MTO on a hip? Please!!! Faker." Another added: "This is flat out cheating by the way." When Raducanu and Anisimova faced off again in Miami two months later, the match ended with a decisive 6-1, 6-3 victory in the former's favour. The Anisimova who had previously put Raducanu under pressure in Melbourne was nowhere to be seen in Florida as she was dominated on the court. Sky Sports commentator Croft said during the match: "She is all over the place. That sigh says it all. Fed up out here. Not enjoying this. She's being humiliated." ‌ Anisimova needed a medical timeout in that same match to address wrist and hand issues that had troubled her earlier in the tournament. Controversy had already arisen during her third-round victory over 11th seed Mirra Andreeva when she took a timeout at 3-1 down in the final set to treat a blister on her middle finger. Russian teenager Andreeva's objections were dismissed by the umpire. The youngster had already taken a medical timeout herself for a stomach issue earlier in the game, of which Anisimova was all too aware. ‌ Anisimova took to Instagram to share a photo of her blistered right middle finger, conspicuously raised while the others were folded down. This gesture was not only a sharp retort to Andreeva but also a cautionary signal to Raducanu about crossing her. The image was accompanied by a sarcastic reference to Andreeva's remark: "'We all know why' at 3-1 up was a good one coming from the 1-2 first set medical." Anisimova conceded Andreeva's early medical timeout had disrupted her rhythm in the match. Although they may be on friendly terms for now, Raducanu might think twice before requesting a break when they clash on Friday in Montreal, with their encounter scheduled for just past 1am on Saturday morning UK time.
