Emma Raducanu's ‘humiliation' of Canadian Open opponent she was accused of cheating against

Daily Mirror6 days ago
Emma Raducanu will face Amanda Anisimova for the third time this year in the third round of the Canadian Open, with the Briton yet to drop a set thus far in Montreal
British No. 1 Emma Raducanu is set to face a familiar opponent in Amanda Anisimova in the third round of the Canadian Open. The Toronto-born star has been making waves in Montreal after not dropping a single set so far in the tournament, most recently defeating Payton Stearns.

Wimbledon runner-up Anisimova has also had a strong showing, although she only entered in the second round. And this could give the American, who returned to tennis after taking a hiatus in relation to her mental health, an important advantage as she seeks her maiden victory over Raducanu.

The two players are known to be friendly off the court and have already faced each other twice in 2025, with Raducanu emerging victorious on both occasions - first at the Australian Open in January and then at the Miami Open in March. It was during the former that Raducanu drew the ire of Anisimova's fans, even being labelled a cheat for her actions.

She was trailing 3-0 in the first set when she called for a medical timeout to receive treatment for a lower back issue. The 2021 US Open champion, who recently reclaimed top spot in the British rankings, went on to win six games without any response from Anisimova.
However, her supporters were less silent as many took to social media and accused Raducanu of dishonesty. Numerous supporters even went so far as to suggest she called for the break merely to halt her opponent's momentum.
One critic slammed X, exclaiming: "She's a cheater!! Running around winning three games after a MTO on a hip? Please!!! Faker." Another added: "This is flat out cheating by the way."
When Raducanu and Anisimova faced off again in Miami two months later, the match ended with a decisive 6-1, 6-3 victory in the former's favour. The Anisimova who had previously put Raducanu under pressure in Melbourne was nowhere to be seen in Florida as she was dominated on the court.
Sky Sports commentator Croft said during the match: "She is all over the place. That sigh says it all. Fed up out here. Not enjoying this. She's being humiliated."

Anisimova needed a medical timeout in that same match to address wrist and hand issues that had troubled her earlier in the tournament. Controversy had already arisen during her third-round victory over 11th seed Mirra Andreeva when she took a timeout at 3-1 down in the final set to treat a blister on her middle finger.
Russian teenager Andreeva's objections were dismissed by the umpire. The youngster had already taken a medical timeout herself for a stomach issue earlier in the game, of which Anisimova was all too aware.

Anisimova took to Instagram to share a photo of her blistered right middle finger, conspicuously raised while the others were folded down. This gesture was not only a sharp retort to Andreeva but also a cautionary signal to Raducanu about crossing her.
The image was accompanied by a sarcastic reference to Andreeva's remark: "'We all know why' at 3-1 up was a good one coming from the 1-2 first set medical."
Anisimova conceded Andreeva's early medical timeout had disrupted her rhythm in the match. Although they may be on friendly terms for now, Raducanu might think twice before requesting a break when they clash on Friday in Montreal, with their encounter scheduled for just past 1am on Saturday morning UK time.

Theory emerges as to why Aston Martin 'wouldn't speak to Sky Germany' at the Hungarian GP

Ralf Schumacher has been covering this season's races for the German version of Sky Sports, and was left fuming by Lance Stroll's furious rant about his car Ralf Schumacher's scathing comments on Lance Stroll during the British Grand Prix has sparked speculation that the Sky Sport pundit has been barred from Aston Martin's paddock. The ex-Williams racer has been covering this season's races for the German version of Sky Sports, and was left fuming by Stroll's furious rant about his car. ‌ During Silverstone, Stroll was forced to battle through torrential downpours and difficult circuit conditions, as he moaned about his machinery. Despite securing seventh place in the British GP on July 6, the Canadian continued his tirade against his team and vehicle. ‌ In a final angry outburst, Stroll said: "This is the worst piece of s*** I've ever driven." With Stroll's dad Lawrence owning the Formula 1 outfit he competes for, supporters were baffled by his anger, and Schumacher was equally unimpressed. ‌ The 50-year-old slammed Stroll's meltdown at the time, as he said: "It's completely unacceptable, and very rude." He added: "I'm sure there was a big celebration at the Aston Martin factory when the person who is supposed to be racing ruins it like that. Someone should tell him, 'Sit down, son, and apologise to the team.'" The remark appeared directed at Lawrence, as Michael Schumacher's younger sibling lambasted Stroll for his comments. Now, these actions have seemingly had repercussions for both the former driver and his broadcaster. ‌ Ralf and his broadcasting partner, Peter Hardenacke, subsequently disclosed that the Aston Martin squad had declined to speak with them on Sky Sport Germany both before and after last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. This prompted speculation that the broadcaster, or perhaps Ralf himself, had been barred from the F1 team's paddock following Silverstone. Schumacher said: "I know, we're currently not being given any interviews because they don't like us very much at the moment," with Hardenacke adding: "We were a bit too critical of the people at Aston Martin." ‌ According to Bild, it is understood that Aston Martin has indicated Sky remains welcome at official FIA occasions. This is due to contractual obligations in F1 agreements preventing drivers or team owners from declining broadcaster interviews. However, Aston Martin are free to police their own hospitality zones throughout the campaign, while post-race discussions also remain entirely at the team's discretion. This isn't the first time Sky has faced an alleged broadcasting boycott from an F1 team. Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner once declined to give an interview to Sky Sports, citing their overly negative reporting.

Djeidi Gassama fired a double, striking either side of a Cyriel Dessers penalty, as the Gers secured a commanding advantage before going to the Czech Republic next week. A play-off clash against either Red Bull Salzburg or Club Brugge awaits, with a place in the Champions League league phase and the riches that come with it the prize for the victor. It's advantage Brugge after the first leg after they left Austria with a 1-0 win. Gassama has scored four goals in three European games for the Gers since arriving from Sheffield Wednesday while Oliver Antman enjoyed a superb debut against Plzen. Those new recruits have pushed Oscar Cortes further down the pecking order. The Colombian winger, 21, was an unused substitute for the clash with the Czech side and his only appearance so far this season was as a late sub against Motherwell on Saturday. Cortes has been at Rangers since January 2024 but has only made 18 appearances with injury wrecking his time at the club. After just 11 games in all competitions last season, his move from French club Lens was made permanent this summer. That's because the loan deal had a £4.5million obligation to buy inserted. Rangers star John Souttar opens up on his future as he reveals new contract talks have stalled But with Rangers bolstering their forward areas with THREE new wingers, competition has never been more fierce. But Cortes' opportunity could yet come, especially after he was singled out for praise by boss Russell Martin after the friendly against Middlesbrough a couple of Saturdays ago. And the winger himself was all smiles as he enjoyed an evening out in Glasgow with his glamorous girlfriend. The footie ace's partner Isabel Caicedo shared some snaps of the loved-up couple at El Santo in Glasgow city centre. The popular spot is a Latin bar and restaurant, serving up cuisine and cocktails from Brazil and Mexico. Stunning Isabel shared the pictures, with one of herself and Cortes tagged "mi vida," which translates to 'my life.' Cortes will be hoping to see some action this weekend when Rangers take on Dundee at Ibrox. They'll be looking to win their first Scottish Premiership match of the season having been held to a 1-1 draw by Motherwell in their opening game last weekend. 5 Oscar Cortes and Isabel Caicedo on holiday together Credit: INSTAGRAM/@ISABELCAAICEDO 5 Glam Isabel has been with Cortes for some time Credit: INSTAGRAM/@ISABELCAAICEDO Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Who is Victoria Mboko? The surging Canadian youngster vying for first WTA title

An 18-year-old tennis prodigy storming through a WTA event, knocking out ranked players and reaching the final for the first time in their career. No, we're not talking about Emma Raducanu's run to the US Open final in 2022 but instead Victoria Mboko's eerily similar surge to the final of the Canadian Open in Montreal. Yet, where Raducanu's charge seemingly came out of the blue having come through qualifying en route to winning the title, Mboko's run feels more like the culmination of a superb season. The teenager began 2025 ranked outside the top 300 players on the women's tour but a breakthrough year saw her win 22 successive matches in January and February to clinch four ITF singles titles and by early May, her win-loss record for the season was 33–3. Her success sent her inside the top 200 in the rankings and earned her a wildcard entry into a first WTA 1000 main draw at the Miami Open where she defeated Camila Osorio in the first round. Mboko then qualified for the Italian Open and was beaten by Coco Gauff in the second round despite taking the opening set off the American. Two Grand Slam appearances followed, the first at the French Open where Mboko fought through qualifying and made it to the third round and the second at Wimbledon where she lost to Hailey Baptiste. But, the best was yet to come. Mboko was born in Charlotte, North Carolina but was raised in Toronto, Canada and is a Canadian citizen. The National Bank Open is her 'home' tournament and a straight set win over Kimberly Birrell in the opening round kick started her remarkable run. Not only that but that victory shot her to a career-best No. 85 in the world rankings and her run through the tournament in Montreal is set to propel her inside the top 50. On her way to the semi-finals she had dropped just one set, against Czech Republic's Marie Bouzkova, having seen off experienced threats such as Sofia Kenin and Gauff in a rematch of their Italian Open meeting. Mboko was the superior player this time around and swept the No.1 seed aside 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 16. Onlookers may have thought her remarkable tournament would end in the last four as she was drawn against 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina but Mboko revealed how strong her mental game is alongside an impressive physical performance on court. Rybakina stormed through the first set, winning it 6-1, and had match point in the second which Mboko managed to save. After that she dug deep to take the set before clinching a deciding set tie break in front of adoring home supporters to become the first Canadian to beat three former Grand Slam champions in a single WTA event in the Open Era. "I had everyone supporting me and pushing me through. Without you guys, I don't think I would've been able to pull this through," she said after defeating Rybakina. Mboko is just the third wildcard to reach the final at the Canadian Open in the Open Era after Monica Seles in 1995 and Simona Halep in 2015. She now faces Naomi Osaka for the chance to win a first WTA title. The four-time Grand Slam champion booked her place in a WTA final for the first time since Miami 2022 and is the first Japanese player in the Open Era to reach the final at the Canadian Open. She also has something to prove and will fight to end Mboko's fairytale run. Winning the title in Montreal would, of course, be the crowning achievement of Mboko's incredible year but it is only the start of what could be a fascinating career for the Canadian teenager. Whether she beats Osaka or not, Mboko has a bright future ahead of her.
