Miami Country Day girls' basketball headed back to familiar territory

Miami Herald22-02-2025

By now, they don't even bother to celebrate much anymore.
A few high fives, a few hugs.
That was about it when the clock hit all zeroes and the Miami Country Day girls' basketball team had clinched another trip to the state final four in Lakeland.
After all, their 47-32 dispatching of Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy in their home gym in a Region 4-2A final meant their 12th trip to state in the past 13 years.
Suffice to say the Lady Spartans and coach Ochiel Swaby could probably find their way to Lakeland blindfolded by now.
The Spartans, 18-11 will head there next week to take on Fort Myers Evangelical Christian in a 2A state semifinal at 1 p.m. on Thursday, and ultimately seek their 10th state title in the past 12 years.
'This year was a little more challenging than other years because they're so young, and really experience can be your greatest friend in terms of doing this,' said Swaby, who has only one senior and one junior on the roster. 'With 11 losses this season, we've gone through our share of struggles but we keep on working and grinding. Believing in hard work and staying committed to the process will always give you a chance.'
Led by sophomore Jalynn Belton, the Spartans jumped all over the Lions early, leading 12-4 after the first quarter and 28-11 at halftime. To Westminster's credit, the Lions didn't cave. They came out and scored the first six points of the second half to cut their deficit to 11.
But freshman Kennedy Deal, part of that large Country Day youth contingent, came back with a three pointer, a steal and another layup to push the lead back to 17. Two more times the Lions (22-8) cut the deficit to 11 but never could get it to single digits.
'We made an emphasis on starting the game off strong and did that,' said Belton, who led all scorers in the game with 16 points. 'Coming into the second half we slowed down a little but we had enough of a lead that we were fine. This season was more of a challenge for us since we're so young and we knew Westminster had a lot more experienced players but we stayed hungry the whole game and found a way to get it done.'
At the other end of the spectrum was the frustration of Westminster Academy players and coach Shannon Wallhoff.
The Lions and Wallhoff can only wonder how many state titles they might have in their trophy case if not for having to face the Spartans every year.
Friday night's loss marked the eighth time in the last nine years that MCD has ended their season in the regional playoffs, six of the last seven in the regional finals.
The only exception was 2022 when the Lions got past them in the finals and then went on to win their only state title in the last 30 years.
To only compound matters, Wallhoff watched her best player Markeli Jones-Tynes roll her ankle during pregame warmups when she stepped on a loose basketball on the floor. Jones-Tynes gutted it out and played, scoring 10 points but her effectiveness was hindered by the tender ankle.
'We won with an asterisk tonight,' Swaby said. 'I felt terrible that their best player rolled her ankle before the game and it's a shame that they didn't have their loaded gun and had to play undermanned. She's such an important part of what they do as their leader and we never want to win without going up against the best of another team. Credit her for getting out there and battling but you could tell she was limited.'
Wallhoff tried not to use Jones-Tynes' injury as an excuse but definitely said that that probably had a lot to do with her team's first half lackluster performance.
'I think it just kind of threw everything off early on and it showed,' Wallhoff said. 'We kind of got it together at halftime and came out and played better in the second half but you simply can't afford to spot a team like that a 17 point lead at halftime and expect to come back. Tonight was definitely more frustration for us against this team but I'm proud of our girls because as much as they struggled in the first half, they came out in the second half and kept battling.'

Is Detroit's Super Bowl window closing already?

Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz is joined by NFL writer Frank Schwab look at the Lions place in the highly-competitive NFC North after Detroit's OL centerpiece Frank Ragnow retires. Hear the full conversation on 'Inside Coverage' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript If you had to bet your house today on the Lions or the field in the NFC North. Advertisement Who would you bet? I, I think I'd take the Lions still, because there's flaws in the other teams, right? Like, but there's flaws in the Lions now too, so I think I'd take the I was pretty confident last year, yeah, Lions, Lions are gonna win that division. Now I'm like, well, uh, I, I think the Lions, like, you know, that's, that's the difference. When you lose a four-time Pro Bowl center? Like, yeah, I would stuff like, would you lose an offensive genius, who who is your offensive coordinator and He led the league in points last year. When you have, I believe it's the 2nd toughest schedule in the NFL projected. Advertisement I mean, this is, these are the things that kind of add up and I'm not saying the Lions can't win a Super Bowl, they certainly can. They, they have one of the best rosters in the NFL still. There's no question about that. They're gonna get their defense healthy, but it just, I, I, I worry, I worry for, you know, I have Lions fans, friends, and I worry that they're gonna 10 years down the road, they're gonna be looking back at those two playoff games and saying. Man, that was it. That was our shot, and we let it pass. I mean this is how quick it could change in the NFL. Who would you take, lines of the field? Advertisement I would take the field. I'll take the field. Uh, here's the other thing. Remember a few years ago, now the AFC West looks like it's gonna be very good, but a few years ago, everybody was sitting there saying, oh man, the AFC West is gonna be great, and it turned out to be a year where the, the, everybody but the Chiefs stun, right? Like we all remember that. I'm not so sure I'm ready to buy the NFC North hype this year to the same level as anybody else. If I'm being fair about the yeah buts that every team has, like, it is easy for me to say, OK, the Lions are great. Yeah, but they're replacing two coordinators, part of their offensive line. Advertisement I'm not sure what it's gonna look like in a bunch of positional coaches. Uh, the Vikings are gonna be great. Yeah, but we have no idea what JJ McCarthy actually looks like on the field. Like none. We have zero proof of concept on a rookie quarterback, essentially, uh, when it comes to the fact that we haven't seen him play any meaningful football. So it's easy for me to say, uh, I, I've been long on the, are we sure about Jordan Love Trane? And so now I'm sitting there saying, I mean, Uh, maybe with the Packers, and then it's super easy for me to say Ben Johnson's never been a head coach before. We don't know if all of this is going to gel together for the, the, the Bears. Advertisement I just, I, I don't know. Like, yes, I could easily see where all four of those teams are epic, incredible, and, and it's absolutely a joy to watch every Sunday. I could also see where this division sort of implodes and all of these teams are sitting here saying, man, this was supposed to be our year. Like I, I think there's a pretty easy case. If you're a Packers fan, it's easy to fault the rest of the division. If you're a Bears fan, it's easy to fault the rest of the division. At some point, you got to put that mirror at yourself and realize that if every single fan base within a division can find a massive reason that they don't think the other teams are gonna be great, I think there is a little bit of a pause for concern that the NFC North might be getting a little bit more praise right now than it deserves.

The Lions' Offensive Line May Be a Problem in 2025

The Lions' Offensive Line May Be a Problem in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Lions have featured one of the NFL's best offensive lines in recent years. In 2024, they consistently opened up running lanes for their backfield and held opposing pass rushes to just 33 sacks while being led by three Pro Bowlers. Advertisement The unit is going to look a lot different in 2025. Kevin Zeitler left in free agency. Now Frank Ragnow has decided to retire. Detroit Lions in a huddleJunfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The Lions are now looking at the interior of their offensive line consisting of an aging Graham Glasgow and two players with a year or less of NFL experience. Glasgow showed signs of decline last season and The Lions Wire's Jeff Risdon revealed that he didn't think Glasgow would make the roster before the Ragnow news. Now he could be changing positions for the 2025 season to start for the Lions, The options to take the other positions could be good. Christian Mahogany was solid in his spot starts last season and Tate Ratledge was taken in round two for a reason. Advertisement The problem is that we just have no idea what to expect from these two or Giovanni Manu and Miles Frazier. It makes the decision to let Zeitler take a $9 million deal elsewhere look even worse than it did at the time. Luckily for the Lions, their division isn't exactly loaded with defensive interiors that strike fear into the hearts of their opponents. However, they'll run into some of the league's best interior defenders in other key matchups against the Chiefs, Ravens, Rams, Buccaneers and Eagles. Those last three teams could be particularly troublesome for the Lions' hopes of contending for a Super Bowl. Advertisement The Bucs, Rams, and Eagles were all playoff teams last season and the Eagles are currently the favorites to win the NFC again in 2025. Last season, it was their defensive front that really swung the Super Bowl as they kept Patrick Mahomes on the run. They've lost Milton Williams, but Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter are still going to be a problem for opponents. If the Lions can get through the top D-lines they'd face in the NFC, they'd then potentially run into star defenders like Chris Jones or Nnamdi Madubuike out of the AFC. The Lions should have no issues dealing with any of these teams on the outside with Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker at the tackle spots, but if the interior offensive line becomes a weakness, it could be a big problem against the NFL's elite. Advertisement The Lions should still be a very good team even with their O-line uncertainty, but for them to reach the Super Bowl that has eluded the franchise for so long, their young guards are going to need to be very good very quickly. Lions Urged to Amik Robertson After His Position Became Very Crowded This Offseason

Lions Urged to Amik Robertson After His Position Became Very Crowded This Offseason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Lions have a few new faces on the roster at cornerback this offseason. Advertisement They signed D.J. Reed to join their starting lineup and then added Rock Ya-Sin and Avonte Maddox as depth after a season where their depth was tested across their roster. Those additions coupled with the potential for a second-year player to take on a bigger role at the position could make one veteran cornerback a trade candidate this offseason. Detroit Lions cornerback Amik Robertson making a tackleJunfu Han/USA TODAY Network via Imagn Images In a recent article identifying one player each NFL team should consider trading this offseason, Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport named cornerback Amik Robertson as the player the Lions should consider trading. Robertson was a solid third option for the Lions in 2024. He only allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete 61.4% of their pass attempts when throwing in his direction and gave up only 7.2 yards per target. Advertisement He was a strong tackler as well, making 50 total tackles, forcing three fumbles, and making 23 stops according to Pro Football Focus. Robertson's performance in 2024 showed that he could be a solid third corner again in 2025, but he has one big obstacle standing in his way. That obstacle is the potential emergence of Ennis Rakestraw Jr. Rakestraw played just 46 snaps last season after the Lions selected him in round two. If he develops the way the Lions are hoping this offseason, he'll take over a large chunk of Robertson's role and potentially make him expendable. If the Lions were to trade Robertson, they would save $4.25 million in cap space, which they could potentially then go use to sign an edge rusher or reinforce the interior of their offensive line. Advertisement There should be teams out there who would be interested in Robertson and the Lions should look to get something for him because he's not going to have much of a role of them in 2025 if he drops behind Rakestraw on the depth chart.
