Yamuna inches closer to danger level
2
Kanpur: River Yamuna in Kanpur Dehat is experiencing flood-like conditions as its water level approaches the danger mark. The surge in water levels is due to substantial rainfall and water discharge from the Kota Barrage in Rajasthan.
Local authorities have issued warning to herders and fishermen to maintain distance from riverbanks, whilst flood response teams remain on alert. The rising Yamuna has triggered an increase in the river Sengur's water level, which joins the Yamuna at Kyotra Bangar village near Chaparghata. The culvert at Aadhan Pathar village has been overflowing for two days, though people continue to traverse it. Officials anticipate complete submersion of the culvert by Friday morning.
Several riverside villages, including Chaparghata, Mushariya, Aadhan Pathar, Kripalpur, Kumbhapur, Bharatauli, Rasulpur, Kisva, Duroli, and Sarauta, face potential flooding risks. Tehsildar Subhash Yadav reports no immediate flood threat, despite approximately one and a half lakh cusecs of water was released from Kota Barrage.
"Flood posts and other responsible teams have been alerted to manage the situation," he said. According to Saurabh Yadav, who oversees the Kalpi centre of the Central Water Commission, the Yamuna's danger mark stands at 108 metres, with Tuesday's level at 106.15 metres. "The Yamuna is rising at a rate of 8 cm per hour," he added.
