Steelers HC Mike Tomlin believes 2025 defense will rewrite history
On Tuesday's airing of 102.5 DVE, Tomlin gave his honest opinion on the 2025 ceiling for the Steelers defense — sharing that this All-Pro-filled unit is capable of creating history.
"We feel really good about the prospects of this group," Tomlin said. "We gotta write that story, but we've got enough talent, we've got enough schematics to do big, big things. And when I say big things, I'm talking about historic things."
T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Cameron Heyward represented one of the NFL's best pass-rushing units — but the recent additions of first-round DL Derrick Harmon and All-Pro CBs Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey truly transform this defense on paper from elite to record-setting.
The history in question isn't about becoming one of the greatest units statistically — it's about leaning on this stacked defense to bring a record-seventh Lombardi home to the Steel City of Pittsburgh.

The Chicago Bears were back at Halas Hall on Friday, where they hosted the Buffalo Bills for a joint practice ahead of their preseason game on Sunday. Michigan football received its official punishment from the NCAA for its sign-stealing scandal that has been a major story for the last few years. Former Wolverines staffer Connor Stalions led the scheme that the NCAA officially stated on Friday gave Michigan an advantage on the field. The punishment is being perceived by many on social media as a "slap on the wrist" but ultimately seemed like where this story would end up. Officially, Michigan will face four years of probation and over $20-million in fines. Additionally, head coach Sherrone Moore with be suspended a total of three games, of which he was already planning to miss two games through Michigan's self-imposed penalty. What is the best and worst case scenario for the Minnesota Vikings in 2025?
Every NFL team has a floor and ceiling, the Vikings are one of those teams that have the largest gap between them. Coming off a 14-win season with backup Sam Darnold, expectations are high due to them turning the keys to the franchise over to top draft pick J.J. McCarthy. Doing that, though, creates as many questions as it gives answers to the team. ESPN's Kevin Seifert gave his predictions for the floor and ceiling of the Vikings' season, and record-wise, they are similar. For the ceiling, he thinks 11-6 is possible. Whereas a floor is 6-11, so the opposite of the ceiling in the exact way. Seifert wrote about the floor and ceiling of the Vikings, saying, "Is Kevin O'Connell serious about the run game? The Vikings coach took a step toward balancing his offense in 2024 from its pass-happy ways in 2022-23, but the ascendance of first-time starter J.J. McCarthy will necessitate a bigger shift. The Vikings will also need to run more effectively after ranking 25th in the NFL last season in EPA on running plays. There is good reason to think they can, after pairing Jordan Mason with Aaron Jones Sr. in the backfield and acquiring three new starters on the line. McCarthy continued to develop during training camp, but counting on him to be a 4,000-yard passer in his first season seems unrealistic." The whole thing will come down to J.J. McCarthy. Fairly or unfairly, that is where things stand as most of this roster returns, with some pieces even revamped, such as their offensive and defensive lines. If McCarthy plays well, this team will reach its potential, but if he doesn't, this team is going to be left picking up its teeth in a tough NFC North.
