Sarawak Focusing On Developing Comprehensive Agriculture Supply Chain

LUNDU (Sarawak), June 10 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is focusing on developing a comprehensive agricultural supply chain to improve the marketing of produce and minimise wastage.
Sarawak Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said that an integrated approach, covering the entire supply chain from upstream to downstream, is essential for the sustainability and long-term success of the state's agricultural sector.
'We cannot continue with outdated practices. We must ensure there are factories, markets, and downstream processing facilities to support every crop cultivated. Only then can this sector truly thrive,' he said during a press conference after visiting the GS30 Hybrid Paddy Planting project site in Tanjung Purun earlier today.
He said one example of new methods being introduced to diversify crop production in Sarawak is the use of GS30 hybrid paddy seeds from Wuhan, China, which are currently being tested in Tanjung Purun.
'These seeds have the potential to yield between 12 to 14 metric tonnes per hectare, compared with the conventional yield of around six to seven metric tonnes per hectare,' he said.
Dr Rundi added that the pilot project, implemented by Baja Engineering Sdn Bhd over 187 hectares, has shown strong potential. However, its success depends on several critical factors, including the efficiency of the drainage system, the formation of soil structures such as hardpans, and full mechanisation, covering ploughing, planting, fertilising, pesticide application, and harvesting.
He also noted that Sarawak currently has a rice self-sufficiency level (SSL) of only about 32 per cent, with an annual production of 180,000 metric tonnes, while the state's actual consumption needs stand at 450,000 metric tonnes.
Earlier, speaking at the event, Baja Engineering Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Juraimi Abdillah said the original name of the hybrid seed was Liangyou 289, developed by Hubei Ceres Technology in China.
'However, the official name of this seed will be finalised later, pending approval from Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,' he added.

In a keynote address, 'Renewable Energy Sarawak: Powering Sustainable Growth', delivered by Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy Berhad and Petros) Datuk Ibrahim Baki at the 18th International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Exhibition and Conference (SNEC PV) in Shanghai, China, Abang Johari hailed energy security and affordability as the key pillars of the state's long-term development agenda. Advertisement 'Sarawak aims to achieve 10 gigawatts (GW) of power generation capacity by 2030, and 15GW by 2035, positioning the state as a renewable energy leader in the region. 'Sarawak currently has an installed capacity of 5,898 megawatts (MW), with over 60 per cent coming from hydropower, supported by thermal generation to ensure energy security. 'Sarawak is targeting 1,500MW of solar generation capacity by 2030 and is exploring more largescale floating solar projects in collaboration with regional and international partners. 'We are committed to making Sarawak the 'Battery of Asean' by exporting renewable energy to our neighbours. 'The success of our crossborder electricity export to West Kalimantan in 2016 has spurred plans to expand energy connectivity to Sabah, Brunei, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. 'These efforts contribute to the development of an integrated Borneo Grid and, eventually, the Asean Power Grid,' he said. The ongoing SNEC PV Conference features over 3,000 exhibitors representing 95 countries, and serves as a key platform for policy updates, market trends, and global energy stakeholder engagement. Perak goes big in agri-food sector

The Mentri Besar said recognising the need for a skilled and future-ready workforce, the state has rolled out various technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programmes focused on agriculture. Among these are the TVET Madani Agricultural Certificate Programme at Titi Gantong Agricultural Institute. Other key institutions include the Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah Fisheries College in Lumut, which specialises in aquaculture and seafood processing, and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) which offers a Master's in TVET Agricultural Science Education to develop future agricultural educators. 'Today's agriculture requires more than fieldwork,' Saarani said in his speech at the closing of the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) Fest 2025 at the Rural Transformation Centre (RTC) in Gopeng. He said Perak required agropreneurs who understood digital marketing, green technology, innovation and data analytics. To attract youth into the sector, he said the government was also promoting agrotourism and hands-on agricultural education, working with local farms, cooperatives, and processing centres. 'These initiatives aim to spark interest among younger generations while diversifying rural economic opportunities. 'The transformation strategy also includes the development of the Perak Halal Industrial Park (HIP) in Lekir. 'The integrated hub is home to halal food processors, livestock product manufacturers and a modern logistics network. 'It's expected to draw substantial domestic and foreign investments, especially in processed food, halal biotechnology and frozen food exports,' he added. Saarani said Perak was also pushing for the adoption of smart farming technologies including automation, sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) to improve productivity and efficiency. He said assistance was being provided through technology incentives, digitalisation support, and logistics upgrades in collaboration with research agencies such as Malaysian Agriculture Research and Development Institute (Mardi) and Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation (MRANTI). 'To ensure inclusive growth, the government is also empowering community-based models involving village cooperatives, women farmer groups and micro-entrepreneur networks. 'These efforts are designed to ensure fair income distribution and collective advancement of rural communities. 'The public is also being urged to support local agricultural products as a way to sustain grassroots economies and reinforce Perak's position as a leader in national food security and the halal industry,' Saarani said.

Floating book fair to make 23-day stop in Labuan next month
THE ship MV Doulos Hope, home of an iconic floating book fair, will dock at Labuan Port from July 7 to 29. The 23-day stay is part of the vessel's ongoing South-East Asia voyage, following its recent stop in Magong, Taiwan, and ahead of its journey to Puerto Princesa in the Philippines. MV Doulos Hope, operated by GBA Ships, is widely known for hosting one of the world's largest travelling book fairs at sea. Onboard, visitors can browse thousands of titles ranging from children's publications to academic works and world literature, all offered at affordable prices, reported Bernama. The unique attraction aims to promote literacy, education and cross-cultural understanding through its global tour. Labuan Port operator Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd confirmed the vessel's arrival, with its managing director Datuk Seri Patrick Tiong saying that the extended port call was expected to bring positive economic spillovers to the island. Due to limited capacity, visitors are encouraged to book online for entry slots, while safety protocols will be enforced to manage crowd flow. Other than Labuan, MV Doulos Hope will also be docking in Kota Kinabalu from Aug 20 to Sept 10. These will be the only Malaysian stops for the vessel this year.
