‘Why won't you respect my language': Mamata attacks Centre over ‘harassment' of Bengali-speaking people

Indian Express20 hours ago
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday again accused the Centre of failing to protect Bengali-speaking people from harassment in different parts of the country, citing a recent incident where a techie and his son were allegedly denied hotel accommodation in Noida 'simply because he spoke in Bengali.'
Speaking at the annual Kanyashree project programme, Banerjee said, 'If someone is a foreigner, action must be taken against them if the Government of India deems it necessary. That is not in our hands. But such actions should not be done arbitrarily… If I respect your language, why will you not respect mine?'
Recalling her own struggles, she told students, 'After my father passed away, I had to sell one of my necklaces to enrol in college. We had no facilities, no advantages. This generation's youth should not suffer like that. They must be self-reliant. I urge parents to not pressure girls into marriage. Once they turn 18, they receive Rs 25,000, keep that in the bank. Even while getting married, women will get Rupashree, another Rs 25,000.'
Banerjee highlighted the fall in dropout rates for girls since 2011-12—from 4.75 percent to zero in primary, 16.32 percent to 2.9% in secondary, and 15.41 percent to 3.17 percent in higher secondary. 'Is this not something to be proud of?' she said, urging girls to pursue academics, vocational training, sports, and other careers, citing examples of pilots, doctors, dancers and footballers.
On language, she said English must be learned well, even in Bengali-medium schools, but 'never forget your mother tongue'. 'Earlier, till Class 5, English was not taught, but we have introduced it. We should know all languages,' she said.
Banerjee invoked history from Vidyasagar abolishing child marriage to Raja Ram Mohan Roy ending sati to highlight West Bengal's contribution to Independence, stressing that 'without Bengal, India's Independence would not have been possible.'
'We have also suffered from Partition. But people who left everything and came to India as refugees were received as Indian citizens,' she said.

GST rates to come down drastically! 99% of items in 12% bracket may move to 5%; here's how you will benefit

New GST tax rates soon! Come this Diwali, you will have to pay much lower indirect taxes on several items of daily use, thanks to next-generation (GST) reforms set to be unveiled by the Modi government. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi announced that as a 'Diwali gift', the GST burden will come down for the common man. According to a PTI report, the GST structure and slab rates are set to undergo a major revamp with only two tax slabs for most things. In the revamped GST regime proposed by the Centre, about 90% of taxable items currently in the 28% bracket are likely to be moved to the 18% slab, while 99% of items in the existing 12% slab may be shifted to the 5% bracket, government sources told PTI. The new structure is expected to feature two main rates — 5% and 18% — along with a special 40% rate for luxury and sin goods. The finance ministry announced that it has suggested a two-tier GST rate system to the Group of Ministers (GoM), including special rates for certain items. This proposal is part of the government's plan to introduce "next generation" GST reforms within the current financial year, aiming to reduce the tax burden on everyday items. The Centre has recommended to a panel of state finance ministers that the GST framework should consist of only two categories: 'standard' and 'merit'. Additionally, specific items may have special rates applied. Presently, the GST system has four tax tiers of 5, 12, 18, and 28 percent, with essential items either exempt or taxed at lower rates, while demerit and luxury items fall under the highest tier. Furthermore, a compensation cess is imposed at various rates on demerit and luxury goods like pan masala and cars. As the compensation cess regime is set to conclude on March 31, 2026, the GST Council will need to establish a method for determining tax rates on goods currently subject to this cess. The GST Council, led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and including state ministers, is anticipated to convene in September to review the GoM's proposal on rate rationalization.
